YOUNG SHARKS EARN REP HONOURS

Young Sharks centre Bronson Xerri will line up for NSW Under 18's after being selected in the junior Blues team to tackle Queensland in the annual Origin clash against Queensland next Wednesday night.

A member of the Sharks Jersey Flegg side and a student at Endeavour Sports High, Xerri was also one of three players chosen in the NSW Combined High Schools team to contest the national championships later in the year.

Xerri will be joined in the NSW under 18's CHS team by Sharks SG Ball squad members in outside back Jonaiah Lualua and hard-running forward Franklin Pele.

Opposing the trio at the National titles will be another Shark in Kyle Pickering, the Gymea junior and a student at St Patrick's College, he was named in the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges squad.

Pickering displayed his utility value by playing fullback, five eighth and in the back row for the Sharks Ball side in 2018 and has another year of eligibility in the under 18's next year.

Jed Hardy and Kobi Wilson, two more young Sharks, both first-year players in the Matthews Cup team this year, were selected in the NSW CHS Under 15's team. Like Pickering, Hardy and Wilson can back up in the Matthews Cup in 2019 after playing a year-young this season.

The 15's schoolboys carnival will be played in Mackay in Queensland during July.

The NSW v Queensland Under 18's Origin match in which Xerri will take part, is scheduled to be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground next Wednesday as the preliminary fixture to State of Origin game one.

SUPER SHARKS CLAIM TARSHA GALE TITLE

Story By : Matt Buxton NSWRL.com.au

The Cronulla Sharks are the 2018 Tarsha Gale Cup premiers after defeating the Newcastle Knights 32 - 22 at Leichhardt Oval.

Faith Nathan was once again the star of the day, scoring a hat-trick of tries which backs up her five from last week and her three from the first week of finals.

It would be Nathan to score the first try of the Grand Final, which came after a nervous start from both sides with the first quarter almost going the distance without a point being scored.

The Sharks raced away to a 16-0 lead at half-time thanks to tries in quick succession to Jaida White, Madison Higgins-Ashby and Zali Fray, but none of these were converted.

A barnstorming run by Faith Nathan put the Sharks on the front foot as they looked to continue their first half form, but it would be the Knights to post much needed first points after the half-time break. Emily Harman showed blistering pace to get on the outside of her opposition defender and race away to the try-line.

There was no stopping Nathan the next time she got an opportunity. Camped on the Sharks line, she picked the ball up from dummy half and performed a textbook sidestep that left the marker clutching at air, before she ran 90 metres to score under the posts.

Refusing to let the game slip away, Newcastle responded with a brutal effort when Caitlin Johnson crashed through the defence and carried a Sharks player on her back in her pursuit to the line.

The Knights earned a scrum at the start of the final quarter, and capitalised on the opportunity when Jasmin Strange crossed. The Sharks looked to respond with a try immediately afterwards, but the play of the day came as the Knights somehow held the ball carrier up in inspirational fashion.

Cronulla would eventually score through Lynda Howarth on the last tackle of that same set, but Joeli Morris set up an exciting finish when she sliced through with some fancy footwork to score and put the Knights back within reaching distance.

Nathan – who has been dominant whenever she has played this season – scored what would be the premiership winning try for the Sharks as she once again showed her athleticism to score yet another long-range four-pointer.

TARSHA SHARKS MOVE INTO THE GRAND FINAL

The Sharks Tarsha Gale Cup side moved into the Grand Final and a match-up with the Newcastle Knights, with a gritty 44-30 victory over the St George Dragons.

Challenged early by the Dragons, the Sharks responded with an eight-try performance that now gives them a chance of claiming the Tarsha Gale title in the competition's second season.

On the back of an amazing five tries to Faith Nathan, which could have been six had another potential four-pointer not been pulled back for a forward pass, and a 16-point effort from skipper Quincy Dodd, the Sharks battled hard in eventually proving too good for a spirited Dragons opposition.

The Dragons scored the first two tries of the match in sending a clear message to the Sharks that they would have a fight on their hands, however when Nathan scored twice in quick succession, both tries converted by Dodd, it was game on with the teams all locked up at 12-all.

Madison Higgins-Ashby scored to give the Sharks their first lead of the afternoon and from there, while their were plenty of anxious moments, they were never headed, with Nathan crossing for three more tries, Dodd and Sariah Paki notching four-pointers in what was another dynamic attacking effort from a Cronulla team which has been dominant throughout the Tarsha Gale season.

With 10 wins from 10 starts the Sharks now head to the Grand Final looking to finish off an undefeated season, however they won't have things their own way against a Knights team who pushed them all the way in their finals clash two weeks ago, the Cronulla side winning that match by just two points.

The Grand Final will be played at Leichhardt Oval next Saturday, with kick off scheduled for 2.00pm.

SG BALL SHARKS BOUNCED OUT

Story By : Sharks Media
Photo's By : steve montgomery / ourfooty media

The Sharks SG Ball team have lost a heart-breaker, going down 17-16 in extra time to the Penrith Panthers to bow out of contention and fall agonisingly short of a Grand Final appearance.

After leveling the scores at 16-apiece three minutes from the end of regulation, the Sharks were left shattered when a field goal in the first period of extra time put the Panthers in front, with Penrith then holding on to set up a Grand Final showdown with the Canterbury Bulldogs.

Giving away plenty of size to the highly-rated Penrith team, while more than matching them with their heart and commitment, the Sharks could be proud of their efforts, not just this weekend but throughout the 2018 season.

The teams went blow for blow in the opening half, the Panthers scoring first, before Sharks hooker Isaac Longmuir fooled the defense with a dummy from close to the posts to cross for his first try.

The Panthers touched down again to go to half time up by 10-6.

Longmuir barged over for a second try just after the break to even up the scores, and then it was centre Vito Tevaga giving the Sharks their first lead of the contest with a try out wide to put his team 14-10 in front.

The Panthers retook the lead with a converted try in the 62nd minute and it took a Kai Broadhurst penalty just three minutes from time to lock the scores up.

Before moving into the extra-time period Broadhurst had a chance to steal the win however his field goal attempt, from almost half way just shaved the upright, therefore sending the match into overtime.

Unfortunately for the Sharks they weren't able to get the job done, Panthers half back Hayden Bonnano kicking the game winner two minutes into the extra time period.

After winning their way into the Grand Final qualifier with an outstanding victory over the minor premiers in the Roosters, it was a cruel way for the Chris O'Connell-coached SG Ball Sharks to end their 2018 campaign.

SEASON OVER FOR MATTHEWS CUP SHARKS

The 2018 season is over for the Matthews Cup Sharks following a 46-6 loss to the Parramatta Eels in their week two elimination finals clash.

The young Sharks were unable to match their rivals, conceding eight tries in what was a disappointing finish to what has been a solid 2018 campaign.

The writing was on the wall early, the Eels gaining the ascendency with three tries in the opening 10 minutes, putting the Sharks on the back foot as they jumped out to an 18-0 lead.

Another try shortly after made it 24-0 to Parramatta, until an individual effort from Jed Hardy, the youngster crashing through the middle of the Eels ruck, converted by Dane Courtney, gave them a glimmer of hope at 24-6 down.

However from there it was all the Eels, four more tries, while keeping the Sharks scoreless, rounding off a convincing win and stamping them as genuine contenders for the Matthews Cup title.

In what was the first year of junior representative football for the majority of the squad, the Daniel Holdsworth-coached team finished the regular season in fifth position, before scoring a strong 22-18 win over the Balmain Tigers in last week's finals encounter.

Unfortunately they were founding wanting in today's match against the Eels however during the course of the season the Sharks have uncovered a number of exciting prospects for the years to come.

BALL SHARKS WIN IN A THRILLER

They left it late but the SG Ball Sharks have come from behind to score a thrilling 23-22 win over the Balmain Tigers in a match played as a curtain-raiser to the Sharks-Storm NRL clash.

The under-18 Sharks were always under pressure from a determined Tigers outfit, however a couple of classy touches late in the contest from half back and captain Kai Broadhurst got the Cronulla side over the line.

It was a Broadhurst kick and re-gather try, followed by a sideline conversion kicked into a stiff south-easterly breeze which levelled up the scores, before his field goal two minutes before full-time put the Sharks in front.

The Sharks battled hard to stay in touch with their opponents in the opening period, with errors, ill-discipline and some average defensive efforts letting them down at crucial moments.

The Tigers were first on the board in the 15th minute of the match, before the Sharks made it 6-all with dive over dummy half try to hooker Isaac Longmuir and a conversion from Broadhurst.

Then just as it appeared the teams would go to the break all locked up, a Tigers try wide out sent them to half time with their tails up at 10-6 in front.

The second period was a see-sawing one, Declan Casey scoring for the Sharks to put them in front, the Tigers then re-taking the lead, with neither side able to establish a clear advantage.

After the Tigers had scored once more, Broadhurst would touch down for the first of his two tries, but again the Tigers would go ahead, this time 22-16 with what appeared to be a match-winning advantage with time running out.

The Broadhurst try then brought them level, before the field goal gave the Sharks the all-important two points and confirmed their place inside the top four of the SG Ball competition table.

The final game of the season for the Ball Sharks will be against Illawarra Steelers at WIN Stadium next Saturday.

MATTHEWS SHARKS HELD TO A DRAW

Story By : Rob Willis Sharks Media Manager
Photo's By : steve montgomery / ourfooty media

A freakish last minute try, scored from a Sharks kick off, saw the Cronulla Matthews Cup side escape with a 20-all draw in their match against the Balmain Tigers played at the Sharks Academy Fields at Cronulla High School.

Down by four points with less than two minutes remaining, Sharks centre Douglas Levi raced through, gathered the kickoff after the Tigers had taken a four-point lead just moments earlier, before racing 35 metres to score wide out.

Unfortunately the attempt at conversion was waved away and the Sharks had to be satisfied with the one-competition point from a performance that was highlighted by far too many errors for the liking of coach Daniel Holdsworth.

The Matts Cup Sharks were on the board first when fullback Noah Lester scored adjacent to the posts and the conversion from Jordan Samrani made it 6-0 Sharks.

The Tigers would claw their way back with a try shortly after, before another four pointer, this time converted, took the visitors to the break up by 10-6 and leaving the Sharks with plenty to do.

Kade Dykes would tip the ledger back in the Sharks favour with an individual effort from close range, the Samrani kick putting his team in front, before a Tigers penalty goal levelled the scores at 12-apiece.

Now with some momentum the Tigers would again grab the lead once more with third third try of the morning, but the Sharks would again respond, Kitione Kautoga showing good strength to get the ball down despite the attention of a number of Balmain defenders.

This time the conversion attempt was wide and the Tigers had an 18-16 lead with time running out.

A penalty goal to Balmain appeared to seal the win just two minutes out, before the frantic finish which saw Levi claim the ball from the restart and score the try to level up the scores at 20-all.

With the one-point the Sharks remain in fifth position, with a crucial final round match against Illawarra before the finals commence.

TARSHA SHARKS TAME THE TIGERS

The Tarsha Gale Sharks put a difficult week for women's rugby league in the Sutherland Shire well and truly behind them in scoring a 46-16 win over the Wests Tigers.

Playing a team sitting equal in first place in the Tarsha Gale Cup ladder, the Sharks girls were simply too good for their opponents in crossing for nine tries in the 30-point win.

After the Club was denied entry into the NRL Women's Premiership earlier in the week it was always going to be an emotional occasion for the Cronulla girls, especially following a pre-game rev-up from CEO Barry Russell, who told the Sharks the best thing they could do was to play well, to notch another win and to remain on top of the competition ladder.

And the Sharks didn't disappoint, with coach Colin Dodd pleased with what his team was able to produce in the warm conditions at the Sharks Academy Field at Cronulla High School.

"They're up there with us leading the competition, 14 points, so each week is about learning, watching what other teams are going to throw at us and I think the girls went out today and executed pretty well," Dodd said.

Using their superior speed out wide the Sharks raced out to a 22-6 half time lead, with Sariah Paki crossing twice, Faith Nathan proving a handful with her clever footwork and Quincy Dodd pushing the team around with her clever work at half back, with Temuskisa Ioane racing away for a long range try just before the break.

The Tigers mounted somewhat of a comeback with two tries in quick succession, however the Sharks would go on with the job, Dodd scoring the final four pointer before converting to give her a personal tally of 14 points on the day.

The performance was typical of what the Sharks have delivered through the previous eight rounds of the season.

"We've got a lot of belief in the side and the support base around us has really helped," Dodd said. "They're all pretty multi skilled across the field, they way they play together, support each other, really helps the team."

After having accounted for one of the joint competition leaders, the Tarsha Sharks now move onto what will be another test of their title credentials when they face the Illawarra Steelers in their final game of the regular season.

Virtually assured of finishing either first or second, Dodd was keen to get a glimpse of the Illawarra side before the finals kicked off.

"Couple of little injuries, but hopefully we'll be right for next week," he said.

"Our test will come next week against Illawarra, but to finish first or second, we're in that top four. We'll go out and keep doing what we've been doing and hopefully get that win to get the minor premiership."

The Sharks play the Steelers in the final round at WIN Stadium in Wollongong next Saturday.

JUNIOR SHARKS 2 FROM 3 AGAINST EELS

ourfooty media

The SG Ball and Tarsha Gale Sharks kept rolling along with strong wins, while the Matthews Cup boys hit a hurdle with a loss to the Parramatta Eels in round six NSWRL Junior Rep matches on Saturday.

The Matthews Cup Sharks went down by 30-8 in the first game on a hot and steamy New Era Stadium field, before the under-18 Ball Sharks scored an impressive 35-16 win over one of their fellow competition contenders.

Playing the last match of the day the Tarsha Gale girls were again virtually untouchable, scoring 12 tries in recording their fifth consecutive win in a 68-6 triumph, with their match called off before full time due to the hot conditions and some injury issues being faced by their opponents.

It was a difficult morning for the Sharks Matts Cup side, a third minute try to the Eels seeing them on the back foot early in the contest.

The Sharks battled back through a try to back rower Kitione Kautoga but the Eels would prove too good, building on their 18-4 half time lead in scoring five tries to two in a 30-8 win.

The story was a more positive one for the SG Ball Sharks, playing against a team sitting equal in second position on the competition ladder.

The Sharks began strongly and fought hard to take an 18-12 advantage to the break, before an impressive second half saw the Cronulla side take control.

The Sharks crossed for three more tries, while restricting Parramatta to just one four pointer, the Cronulla squad coming away with a 35-16 win that will have the other sides in the Ball competition on notice.

Then in the unfamiliar position of being the last game on the three-match roster, the Tarsha Gale Sharks again displayed what a super outfit they are with another dominating performance.

The Sharks had nine different try scorers, with Maddi Higgins-Ashby, Jaida White and Quincy Dodd notching two apiece.

The Tarsha Sharks have now scored an incredible 352 points, as opposed to 76 against in their five matches to date.

The three Sharks teams play at home in round seven matches next weekend, the Tarsha Gale Sharks against the Roosters, the Ball and Matthews Cup boys against North Sydney.

JUNIOR SHARKS SMASH THE DRAGONS

Story By : Sharks Media

The Sharks Junior Rep teams continued their march towards finals berths with wins against the St George Dragons in all three matches on Saturday.

The Tarsha Gale girls kept their undefeated record alive with a 50-28 win, the Matthews Cup were far too good in registering a 48-0 victory, while the SG Ball Sharks bounced back from a last start loss with a 40-24 triumph.

The wins kept all Sharks teams well and truly in the hunt in their respective competitions with just three rounds of the regular season remaining.

In the first match to kick off on Southern Cross Group Stadium the Tarsha Gale Sharks had their toughest test so far, yet they still managed 50 points and nine tries in another impressive win.

Quincy Dodd crossed for two tries, as did Lynda Howarth, with Dodd also kicking seven goals to clock up 100 points in just four games.

The Sharks are now one of three undefeated teams in the Tarsha Gale competition.

After a loss the previous week in Newcastle the Matthews Cup Sharks were keen to return to the winner's circle and three tries in the first 10 minutes was the ideal start. By half time and up by 28-0 it was obvious the young Sharks had come determined to put the disappointment of seven days prior well and truly behind them.

Four more second half tries, for a total of nine in all, was the perfect result to push the under-16 Sharks back into striking distance of the competition leaders. Only one team in the Matthews Cup is undefeated, with the Sharks one of four tied in second place just two points behind.

The Sharks play one of those teams tied in second in the Parramatta Eels next weekend in a crucial clash for both sides.

Then in the SG Ball, while the Sharks never had it all their own way, they always seemed to be doing enough to hold their opponents at bay.

The Sharks led 24-18 at the break, pushing that advantage out to 40-18, before a late Dragons consolation try rounded out the scoring.

Kai Broadhurst and Kyle Pickering both managed two tries for the under-18 Sharks, Broadhurst also kicking four goals.

Like their Matthews Cup counterparts, the Ball Sharks have suffered just one loss, that also coming at the hands of the Knights and they too are just two points from the competition leader, with the Roosters and Panthers tied at the top after five wins each from their five matches played.

Their next opponents the Eels, again similar to the assignment facing the Sharks Matthews Cup side, are level on eight points and one win shy of the top spot on the ladder.

The three Sharks teams play away to the Eels at New Era Stadium next weekend.

YOUNG SHARKS HIT A HURDLE

ourfooty media

A second lengthy road trip in the space of seven days was always going to present its challenges and that’s the way turned out for the junior Sharks with two losses and a win to the Tarsha Gale girls in round four matches against the Knights last weekend.

After the Tarsha Gale Sharks had dismantled the Knights with a 66-18 thumping, the boys found the going that little bit harder, with the Matthews Cup team fighting back before going down by 22-16, before the Ball Sharks slipped to their first loss of 2018, beaten 28-20 by the Newcastle 18’s at Cessnock on Saturday.

Following on from undefeated starts by all three sides, the two losses represented a slight speed hump for the young Sharks who will look to continue their push towards finals berths when they play St George in round five.

The trip to the Newcastle region to play the Knights came just seven days after the Sharks junior rep teams played on the road in Canberra in week four.

The day began well for the Sharks at the Cessnock Sports Ground field with another sizzling display from the Tarsha Gale girls.

After notching 80 and 98 points respectively at their two previous starts, the Tarsha Gale side crossed for 12 tries in a 48-point win, with Faith Nathan touching down four times, Madison Higgins-Ashby and Quincy Dodd on three occasions.

Higgins-Ashby has now scored 12 tries in three games to lead the competition try-scoring list, while Dodd has accumulated 78 points this Tarsha Gale season.

The Matthews Cup clash which followed proved to be a more difficult challenge for the Sharks in a game matching two undefeated sides.

The Knights jumped out to a 22-4 lead, before the Sharks edged closer when backrower Kitione Kautoga crossed to make it 22-10 at the break.

In a second half dominated by defence the under-16 Cronulla boys battled hard in keeping their opponents scoreless, with Sharks outside back Sam Stonestreet scoring the only try after half time. But it would be the Knights who held firm in inflicting the first defeat on the young Sharks squad so far in 2018.

The SG Ball match which followed was another tough and rugged affair and while the Sharks tried hard to get the better of the opposition, in the end the Knights were just a little too good in registering a five tries to three win.

The teams traded four-pointers in the first half Newcastle leading 22-20, however the second half followed a similar pattern to the Matthews Cup match, with the final 35 minutes characterised by solid defence from both teams.

In the final washup the Sharks couldn’t break down their opponents, with Newcastle coming away eight-point victors.

While the Tarsha Gale girls remain on top of the ladder after the conclusion of the fourth round, the Matthews Cup and SG Ball teams slipped slightly to sit in fifth place on the respective tables, both just two points shy of the competition leaders.

The three Sharks sides are next in action this Saturday when they host St George in matches to be played at Southern Cross Group Stadium.

The day will begin with the Tarsha Gale at 10.15am, the Matthews Cup gets underway at 12noon, with the SG Ball match kicking off at 1.45pm. A round one match in the Jersey Flegg between the Sharks and Roosters will follow the junior rep action.

JUNIOR SHARKS CONTINUE WINNING RUN

Story By : Sharks Media

The Matthews Cup and SG Ball Sharks both survived scares before emerging victorious, while the Tarsha Gale girls recorded a resounding win as the three Sharks Junior rep sides defeated the Canberra Raiders on Saturday.

The under-16 Matthews Cup boys came away with a 30-16 win, the SG Ball side edged out Canberra by 32-24, with the Tarsha Gale Cup girls scoring 17 tries in an incredible 98-6 demolition of the Raiders as all three sides remained undefeated in their respective competitions.

The Tarsha Gale Cup team got the ball rolling with a flogging of Canberra in a match where they turned in a dazzling display of attacking rugby league.

It took the Sharks 12 minutes to post their first points, but from there it was a procession, Maddison Higgins-Ashby scoring five tries in the demolition, Quincy Dodd crossing three times, with eight different players getting their name on the try-scoring sheet.

Dodd also booted 15 goals to go with her three tries for a personal tally of 42 points.

After an equally dominant win in their previous match against the Bulldogs, the Tarsha Gale Sharks, who sit on top of the competition table after three rounds, are shaping as definite contenders going on what they have produced so far.

In the Matthews Cup game that followed the Sharks may have thought they were in for a similar afternoon to their Tarsha Gale counterparts when captain Blake Hosking scored in the first minute of the match, however what followed was a close contest as the young Cronulla boys were forced to battle hard to secure their third win of the 2018 season.

After the early Sharks try the Raiders gained some momentum, four tries in the first half seeing the home team go to the break up by 22-12 and leaving the Sharks with plenty of work to do.

Showing their class as well as a good deal of determination the Sharks fought their way back, tries to half back Kade Dykes, fullback Dane Courtney and winger Sam Stonestreet seeing them take a 30-22 lead with time running out.

The Raiders managed a consolation try a minute before fulltime but the Sharks would hold on and remain one of only three undefeated teams in the Matthews Cup competition.

The teams both scored five tries, with the goal kicking of Jordan Samrani, who converted all five Sharks tries, ultimately proving the difference.

For the SG Ball Sharks their preparations were somewhat disrupted with a bus breakdown and a late arrival at Belconnen and they did take time to find their feet, the Raiders scoring twice to take a 12-4 lead midway through the first half.

To their credit the Sharks found their composure, with two tries with fullback Vito Tevaga and another by fullback Jonaiah Lualua seeing them take a 20-12 advantage to half time.

The Raiders inched closer with a 42nd minute try, before a four pointer to Angus Ernst, converted by Kai Broadhurst pushed the lead out to eight points and from there the Sharks would do enough to hold on and claim the points.

The Ball Sharks, with the Panthers, Roosters and Knights, are one of only four teams with three wins from their three matches this year.

The three Sharks junior rep sides go on the road again this week when they travel to Cessnock for games against the Newcastle Knights.

LOPSIDED SCORELINES MARK ROUND THREE OF UNDER-18 GIRLS LEAGUE COMPETITION

The Sharks beat the Raiders 98-6 in the Tarsha Gale Cup.

SEVENTEEN TRIES IN 60 MINUTES.

NO, that’s not a typo — the Sharks’ under-18 girls league team were in a savage mood against the Raiders on Saturday as lopsided scorelines marked round three of the Tarsha Gale Cup.

Cronulla romped to a 98-6 win over Canberra at the Raiders Club Belconnen as Madison Higgins-Ashby helped herself to five tries and Quincy Dodd three while also potting 15 conversions for a staggering 42 point individual haul.

But don’t go and tear up your green jerseys just yet, Raiders fans.

Canberra weren’t the only Tarsha Gale Cup side under the pump on Saturday as the Knights walloped the Bulldogs 92-4 at Maitland Regional Sportsground and Illawarra trounced the Roosters Indigenous Academy 76-24.

Keeley Davis was unstoppable for the Steelers scoring five tries and kicking 11 goals to match Dodd with a cool 42 points.

The other two games were a bit more competitive, with the Panthers beating the Eels 42-20 and the Dragons defeating the Rabbitohs 36-22.

Not surprisingly, Cronulla, (Knights) and Illawarra lead the competition after three rounds.

JUNIOR SHARKS WIN BIG AGAINST THE BULLDOGS

ourfooty media

The Matthews Cup, SG Ball and Tarsha Gale Cup Sharks all enjoyed big wins over the Bulldogs in round two Junior Rep matches played at the Sharks Academy Fields at Cronulla High School yesterday.

The Tarsha Gale girls got the day off to fast start with a comprehensive 70-18 win, before the under-16 Matthews Cup boys dominated their match in registering a 30-6 victory, while the Ball Sharks made it a treble with a 34-16 thumping of the Bulldogs in keeping all three teams undefeated after two rounds of the junior rep competitions.

First up were the Tarsha Gale Sharks in what was their first outing following a round one bye, however they were quickly into gear, racing away to a 48-18 half time lead.

The second half followed a similar pattern, the girls adding 22 more points while keeping their opponents scoreless in what was a performance set to put other teams in the Tarsha Gale competition on notice.

Maddison Higgins-Ashby had a field day with a personal tally of four tries and a goal, with Zali Fay and Quincy Dodd also notching two tries each in the win.

Following up on the fast start to the day from their female club mates the Matthews Cup Sharks were quickly on the board through a Kade Dykes try in just the fifth minute and when centre Douglas Levi crossed a short time later the home team were high on confidence at 12-0 in front.

A Zac Hodges four pointer made it 12-0 at the break, with the Sharks extending their lead to 30-0 before a late try to their opponents completed the scoring.

With two wins from two starts the Matthews Sharks now head to Canberra as one of five undefeated teams two rounds into the 2018 season.

Then putting the finishing touches on a successful day for the Sharks, the under-18 Ball squad always held the upper hand in their clash in recording a six tries to three win over the Bulldogs.

Joniah Lualua scored after just three minutes, Isaac Langmuir crossed for the Sharks second and the result was a good as confirmed when the Cronulla under-18 side had forged a 22-6 half time lead.

Also undefeated, the Ball Sharks will be looking to build on their fast start to the season when they travel to Canberra to face the Raiders next week.

All three Sharks sides now head to Belconnen in the ACT for round three matches, with the Tarsha Gale girls first up at 11.30am.

YOUNG SHARKS MAKE STRONG START
ourfooty media

The Matthews Cup and SG Ball Sharks both started their 2018 campaigns with round one victories against the Central Coast in matches played earlier today.

The under-16 Matthews Sharks dusted off the rust of a long pre-season with a comfortable 22-4 win, while the Ball Sharks overran their opponents in the second half in notching a 48-8 victory to also get their season underway on a winning note.

In the Matthews Cup the Sharks were on the board early when centre Jordan Samrani crashed over wide out, before Noah Lester crossed for his teams' second in the south-western corner of Southern Cross Group Stadium in almost an identical position to where the first try was scored.

Samrani kicked the second of the two conversion attempts, with the Sharks taking the 10-0 advantage to the half time break.

Back rower Max Scanlon made it 14-0 after scoring early in the second period, with the Samrani kick at goal extending the margin to 16.

Next it was the turn of Kade Dykes to score, the Sharks half back showing some clever footwork to beat some tired defenders close to the Central Coast line, the conversion pushing the score out to 22-0.

The Central Coast would manage a consolation four pointer after collecting a poor Sharks kick as the full-time siren was sounding, making the final score 22-4 to the home team.

Overall it was a solid first hit out for the Sharks, with Coach Daniel Holdsworth likely to be thrilled with the defensive effort, if a little less pleased with a number of first half errors which put his team under pressure.

In the SG Ball match that followed the Sharks were on the board early through winger Eliah Veikoso , then fullback Declan Casey doubled the lead with a try shortly after to make it 8-0.

Two more four pointers, one each to Vito Tevaga and Nathan Atkinson, both converted by Kai Broadhurst, took the score out to 20-0 at the break.

The second half would follow a similar pattern, with the Sharks going on with the job in notching a strong first up win.

The two Sharks junior rep sides, along with the Tarsha Gale girls who had a first round bye, will be in action again next Saturday when they play the Bulldogs at the Sharks Academy Fields at Cronulla High School.
