CRONULLA SHARKS ELITE TOUCH FOOTBALL PATHWAY

Sharks young gun Valentine Holmes and returning local junior Chad Townsend were on hand today to help launch a new club initiative in taking NRL pathways to another level as the Sharks announced they will put in place quality structures for the non-contact version of the game.

Homes and Townsend interacted with Touch Football players from under-10 to open-age seniors in assisting with the rollout of a program which will culminate in a Cronulla Sharks Touch Academy to commence in April.

As a part of a Sharks Elite Touch Football pathway, male and female players will participate in the senior Touch Football State Cup in Port Macquarie this coming weekend under the Cronulla Sharks banner, while youth teams in under 10’s, 12’s, 14’s and 16’s will also represent the Sutherland Shire, Taren Point Touch Football and the Sharks in their respective age group state titles next February.

“It is an exciting new agreement between the Cronulla Sharks and Taren Point Touch Association, one which will see the implementation of an Elite Touch Academy and Cronulla Sharks elite touch football teams, both male and female, who will compete at a State level,” said Tim Thorne, GM of Engagement and Pathways at the Sharks.

“We are confident this partnership will open up an exciting new pathway for both male and female touch players.

“The Sharks thank Taren Point Touch Association and the NSW Touch Association for their fantastic support in helping us to get this program up and running,” Thorne added.

Holmes and Townsend were joined at the program launch event at Shark Park today by junior and senior Touch players.

More information is available as to joining a team and being a part of the non-contact version of the game from www.PlayNRL.com.au or the Taren Point Touch Association website or Facebook page.

NYC MATCH REPORT | Sharks v Sea Eagles

The Manly Sea Eagles have recorded a convincing 52 points to 6 victory over the NYC Sharks at Remondis Stadium.

In the Sharks 20s last outing of 2015, the hosts could not make an indentation against a Manly side buoyed by the prospect of playing top-four football next weekend.

And with that in the front of their minds, Manly got off to a near perfect start when they capitalised on a soft turn over and crossed through their back-rower William Bainbridge in the 4th minute.

The Sharks right-edge defence was looking shaky early, and the visitors ran in more points just five minutes after their first try to extend their margin to 12 points.

With the momentum well and truly with the boys from the Northern Beaches, the visitors would again assert their top four credentials when Mitch Thomas crossed on Manly's right wing.

Addison Demetriou could not convert from the Western touchline, as the score remained at 16-0 in favour of the Sea Eagles.

Two from three with the boot, Demetriou would get in on the action in crossing the stripe too, in running in a sensational try after some razzle-dazzle from the Manly side.

In rounding out an emphatic first-40 performance, Bogle would register a double before Nic Hynes crossed to extend the visitors lead to 30.

On the stroke of half time, Manly would take another gift two points from a penalty goal, and return to the sheds with a commanding 32-points-to-nil lead.

The second-half started much the way as the first finished, as the Sea Eagles ran in another try, this time through forward Liam Knight.

In a match where the result was all-but beyond doubt at the change of ends, the pattern of play and scoring slowed – until Demetriou grabbed his second of the day in the 58th minute.

Up 44 points to nil, the Eagles showed no signs of mercy in bringing up a half century of points, as James Parker ran in a soft try. Demetriou converted, as manly took their lead to 50-0.

Manly would add two more points from the penalty tee, before the Sharks finally found some joy – albeit in the 80th minute – as Ashleigh Nisbet crossed on the buzzer to break the Sharks duck.

CELEBRATING SUCCESS | Junior Rep presentation

Successful in claiming not only the Matthews Cup and SG Ball titles but also National Championships in the under-16’s and under 18’s, the Sharks 2015 junior rep teams were celebrated and congratulated at the annual Junior Representative Presentation event at Sharkies tonight.

Awards were handed out, speeches made and those most closely associated with the teams praised for their tireless efforts, with players, parents, coaches and staff joining together on a night to recognise the outstanding feats of the Sharks junior rep teams.

Not only did the Sharks claim their first-ever SG Ball crown, but to do so during a season in which the under-16 Matthews Sharks also took out the prestigious NSWRL title, was a first for Cronulla and an accomplishment achieved by very few other clubs.

Added to that both teams, despite injuries to some key players after bruising Grand Finals the week prior, went on to beat the Townsville Stingers in the two age groups to claim the National Championships.

While a difficult task to single out individuals after what were team efforts in winning both titles, the coaches did manage to name who they thought were their best players throughout the respective campaigns.

This year coaches and staff also came up with a ‘try of the year’ and a ‘tackle of the year’ for the two teams, in addition to the major awards.

Awards were presented by coaches Glenn Brailey and Dave Howlett, Sharks Elite Coaching Development Manager John Morris, NRL Head Coach Shane Flanagan and NRL squad members Anthony Tupou, Jacob Gagan and Fa’amanu Brown.

SG Ball Captain and centre Curtis Scott was a worthy winner of the major award, the 2015 Junior Rep Player of the Year, in addition to his SG Ball best player award.

During what has been an outstanding year for the local junior, Scott has also represented NSW in the Origin under-18’s and was recently selected in the Australian Schoolboys side.

Other major award winners on the night were Daniel Vasquez (SG Ball – Coaches Award), Semisi Kioa (Matthews - Coaches) and Fine Kula (Matthews Player of the Year).

Sharks Group CEO Lyall Gorman also spoke, while Club Chairman Damien Keogh was a part of the crowd on the night.

All players also took home their actual playing jerseys, an embroidered Coaches Jacket and a glossy 96-page Yearbook documenting their journey through the 2015 season.

NYC MATCH REPORT - SHARKS VS DRAGONS

ourfooty media

In a loss which now leaves them needing to string some wins together if they hope to push their way into the top eight the NYC Sharks have gone down by 26-18 to the Dragons.

In a game where the lead changed hands on a number of occasions, the Sharks battled hard throughout but in the end it was the St George Illawarra side who prevailed.

The first half was somewhat of a defensive struggle in the breezy conditions, with the Dragons posting first points midway through the half with a try wide out to winger Thomas Carr.

The Sharks however continued to grind away and would be rewarded for their persistence just six minutes from the break when Jayden Brailey scooped up his own kick and planted it down to open the account for his team.

Kicking into a strong westerly breeze Ryan Cummins wasn't able to add the extras and it was 4-all with half time approaching.

The Sharks weren't quite finished though and when Josh Addo-Carr crossed with the half-time siren sounding the home team would grab a narrow 8-4 lead after the first 40-minutes.

With neither side advantaged by a westerly wind blowing straight across the ground the two teams were again evenly matched, but it would be the Dragons to wrestle back the lead when winger Dee Jay Harris touched down on the end of a well-worked backline move.

Ryan James slotted the conversion with the wind at his back and the Dragons led 10-8.

Again the Sharks responded, winger Semisi Vea going over in the south-weatern corner and despite the conversion attempt bouncing off the upright the home team were in front 12-10 with still more than 25 minutes of the match remaining.

With a fifth lead change the Dragons went back to the lead when big centre Izaac Thomson crashed over, converted by James and the Sharks had some work to do at 16-12 behind with 15 to go.

They made it hard work for themselves when the Dragons turned a spilt Sharks pass into an 80-metre runaway try to extend their lead 20-12 but when Jayden McDonagh stretched out and planted the ball down with just four minutes remaining, converted by Cummins to make it 20-18 they had given themselves hope.

All that hope disappeared however following an error from the set of six following the kick off and the Dragons wound down the clock before scoring in the 80th minute to wrap up the result.

The loss was a disappointing one for the Sharks against the bottom-placed Dragons and now leaves them with plenty of work to do if they hope to play finals football in September.

The next match for the Sharks is an away game against the Canberra Raiders next Saturday.

3 Sharks selected in AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLBOYS

Three members of the successful Sharks SG Ball squad have won selection in the Australian Schoolboys team to take on New Zealand in September and October.

Curtis Scott from Endeavour Sports High, Daniel Vasquez from St Patricks College at Sutherland and Aquinas College youngster Blayke Brailey have all made the team to play a two-Test series against the Kiwis in Brisbane.

The team announcement followed the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League (ASSRL) Under-18s Championships held this week at the Collegians Rugby League Club at Figtree near Wollongong.

Scott’s NSW Combined High Schools (CHS) team beat a NSW Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC) side including Vasquez and Brailey by 24-18 in the championship final.

Brailey’s selection in the Australian team was particularly noteworthy, with the younger brother of Sharks NYC hooker Jayden in year 11 at Aquinas College and having another year of schoolboy football in front of him.

He follows in the footsteps of brother Jayden who was a part of the Australian Schoolboys team which toured the UK and Europe at the end of 2014.

Scott and Vasquez have already been promoted to the Sharks NYC squad in 2015 and were also members of the NSW Under 18’s team that played Queensland in a curtain-raiser to State of Origin Game 2, while Brailey has another year of SG Ball eligibility remaining in 2016.

Brailey is a hooker, Scott plays in the centres or outside backs and Vasquez a front rower.

NRL General Manager League Integration and Game Development Andrew Hill said the ASSRL was a vital breeding ground for the game.

“Congratulations to the all the players who competed in the Championships this week, and especially to those selected for the Australian Schoolboys squad,” Mr Hill said.

“It’s an honour to play for your country and I’m sure they will be wear the Australian jersey with pride, passion and integrity.”

As part of the NRL’s commitment to development, all players and team staff at the National Championships participated in education and welfare sessions.

Lachlan and Jaeman said playing for NSW under-16s team against Queensland was a privilege and something they will never forget.
SHARKS ALL SCHOOLS | Primary KO

The Sharks All Schools knockout for primary schools was run and won at the Barden Ridge playing fields yesterday with 18 different schools taking part.

A total of 38 teams from those 18 different schools entered the event, with around 600 young players on show on a day where some outstanding rugby league skills were displayed.

In large and small school divisions, the honours were shared, other than two victories recorded in the 10B and 12B small school category by Kurnell Primary School.

Kurnell were dominant in both, scoring 22-0 and 16-0 wins in the two championship matches.

A number of exciting games were played, none more so than the 6-all draw in the 10A Final between local rivals Woolooware and Our Lady of Fatima, with Woolooware awarded the title on the first try-scorer rule.

The 12A Final was also keenly contested as St Patricks, Sutherland held out Holy Family Menai in recoding a narrow 10-6 victory.

The winning teams now progress to play State All Schools Finals where they will represent the Sutherland Shire schools at a number of venues in the Penrith district on July 27.
RESULTS OF THE GRAND FINALS ARE BELOW.

FOUR SHARKS SELECTED In NSW 18'S

In a reward for their outstanding form throughout the junior rep season, culminating in victories in the SG Ball Final and National 18’s Championship, four Sharks have been chosen to represent NSW and one Queensland in the upcoming interstate clash to be played before Origin 2.

Sharks Ball captain and centre Curtis Scott, props Daniel Vasquez and Brock Ilett along with lock Billy Magoulias will run out for the young Blues, while outside back Keenan Yorston, a new recruit at the Cronulla club in 2015, will play for Queensland.

The four Sharks chosen for the NSW side are all local products, with Magoulias, Ilett and Scott from the Cronulla Caringbah club and Vasquez a Yarrawarrah Tigers junior.

John Morris, who played an integral role in the success of the young Sharks squads this year, will also join the NSW 18’s in a coaching assistant’s position.

The five players in the 18’s clash bring to nine the number of Sharks players involved in the junior interstate matches after four under 16’s represented NSW against the Queenslanders in the curtain-raiser to Origin game one.

As Sharks development manager Vinh Tran expressed, the selection of the young Sharks is a great endorsement of the success enjoyed during the 2015 junior rep season and also of the clubs development program in general.

“It is a fantastic achievement for these young men and brings the Origin representation for our junior reps up to nine players,” Tran said. “We congratulate these players, as well as John, and wish them the best of luck.”

The four NSW players will head into a training camp on Wednesday before making the trip to Melbourne before the game on June 17.

Morris will join the team in camp and help head coach Todd Payten and his assistant Liam Fulton to prepare the NSW 18’s before their big game next week.

The four Sharks who played in the NSW 16’s were Jaemon Salmon, Dylan Smith, Lachlan Smith and Luke Metcalf.

Despite being in the tussle for large parts of the contest, the U20s Sharks were unable to continue their recent winning ways against a dominant Roosters outfit.

Getting off to the near-perfect start, the Sharks found their way down field thanks to consecutive penalties, and went close to scoring on two occasions when Sopi and Clarke were held up over the Roosters goal line.

Having repelled the Sharks onslaught the visitors marched down the field and opened the scoring through five-eighth Connor Watson.

Centre Taane Milne made no mistake adjacent to the posts, in sending the tri-colours out by 6 inside the opening ten minutes.

Cronulla regathered themselves and again found their way deep into Roosters territory, and having earned a repeat set when halfback Brad Deitz was hit late, Semisi Vea crossed out wide and the scores were tied at 6.

Stunning lead up play from Sharks three-quarter Josh Addo led to the second Sharks try of the afternoon, as winger Levy Sopi continued his recent run of personal successes in nabbing another four-pointer - his fouth in two weeks.

Fullback Ryan Cummins was unable to add the extras though, with his conversion attempt hitting the uprights and falling away.

SG Ball graduate Curtis Scott made it three tries in eight minutes for the Sharks, but again Cummins could not add the extra 2 and the score remained at 14-6.

13 Minutes before the half time interval, Roosters lock Sukamanu Raki bullied his way over the line before Paul Momirovski sent his side to the front as the Roosters took a 18-14 lead into the sheds.

An injury to Alec Susino on the other side of the break held the match at a standstill for near on ten minutes, but the stoppage didn't halt the Roosters surge. Momirovski and Watson each grabbed tries to take their personal tallies to two, and the score to 28-14.

The Sharks scored twice to get back to within four points through lock Billy Magoulias and Addo, who notched his double.

But the Roosters again extended their lead when fullback Latrell Mitchell put on a sublime piece of play to send Jack Hetherington in untouched.

The visitors continued to pile on the points and went out by 14 as Johnny Tuivasa-Sheck took a leaf out of his elder brothers book to cut the Sharks defence to shreds. Milne capped a near-perfect day with the boot, converting the try to extend the lead to 16.

Full time at Remondis Stadium, the Roosters running out 40 points to 24 victors.

SHARKS SG BALL CLAIM NATIONAL TITLE

A one-handed Curtis Scott off-load for a Cameron Scott try with less than two minutes left on the clock has given the SG Ball Sharks a dramatic 18-16 win over the Townsville Stingers at Belmore Sports Ground.

In a match to decide the under-18's National Champions, the Sharks fell behind with five minutes remaining, only for the last gasp try to save the day and add to the 16's title won by their Matthews Cup counterparts earlier that afternoon.

While the Scott's (no relation) were the heroes, an outstanding tackle from hooker Blayke Brailey, dislodging the ball from his Stingers opponent, provided the field position for the Sharks final score.

The victory capped off a brilliant ending to the season for the Sharks who had to win their last three games just to make the SG Ball play-offs before going on their unbeaten run through the finals series.

The match started well for the Sharks when Curtis Scott showed good strength to beat a handful of tacklers before scoring wide out.

Jack Williams, his head swathed in bandages after suffering a head cut earlier in the match, was off-target with his conversion attempt however the Sharks led 4-0.

In what was a physical defensive struggle for most of the first half points were hard to come by and it was the Stingers who were next to score, a try five minutes from the break giving them a 6-4 advantage.

A penalty goal by Townsville made it 8-4, a lead they would take to half time.

The second period began in near perfect fashion for the Sharks when they retrieved the ball from the kick off, before Billy Magoulias crossed just a couple of tackles later to level the scores only one minute into the half.

Shortly after big Stingers prop Mitchell Dunn crashed over to give his team back the lead at 12-8 and again the Sharks would be forced to come from behind.

As was the case in the first half both teams lifted their defensive intensity and it took until 15 minutes from time before the next points were scored and it would be the Sharks to regain the ascendency, Cam Scott running onto a Kyle Flanagan pass to again level the scores.

From close range this time Williams was on target and the Sharks had their noses in front at 14-12 with time ticking.

What followed however was a frantic final 10 minutes with first Townsville going back in front by 16-14, before the Scott partnership broke the hearts of the Queenslanders with their slick skills and resulting try in the dying moments.

The win was an outstanding achievement for a Sharks side that found itself floundering in 12th position mid-season due in part to a lengthy injury toll.

As with the Matthews Sharks the win was built on an overall team performance, but there were a few stars for the Cronulla side on the day.

While the Scott's were dangerous throughout, props Daniel Vasquez and Brock Illet deserve praise for their wholehearted efforts in the middle of the field, with Magoulias again the rock in the forward pack around which a lot of the Sharks attack was built.

Five eighth Flanagan also turned in a tidy performance for the Sharks, with his well-timed passes and clever kicking game continually putting his side on the front foot.

With the SG Ball under-18's season now coming to an end a number of Sharks will make the step up to the club's NYC squad, with a number of others still eligible to go around again in the Ball competition in 2016.

SHARKS MATTS CUP 2015 NATIONAL CHAMPS

Despite a few anxious moments towards the finish, the Matthews Cup Sharks have held on to claim a 26-20 win over the Townsville Stingers in the under-16's National Championship match.

The young Sharks were dominant for close to 50 minutes of the match, building up a 26-0 advantage, before a Townsville comeback fell just short as the Cronulla side hung on to secure a memorable victory.

With the Sharks well on top a bizarre moment tipped the momentum in their opponents favour, when a Stingers kickoff bounced fortuitously off the cross bar of the goal posts and after a scramble for the ball into the hands of a Townsville player who touched down adjacent to the posts.

From there it was all Townsville however the Sharks had done more than enough in the first 50 minutes of the contest to score a well-deserved victory.

For coach Glenn Brailey and his team the win capped off a magnificent season, one which culminated in them winning the Matthews Cup title before getting the better of the Stingers in the National final.

Neither side was able to trouble the scorers for the first 10 minutes of the match but it would be the Sharks to strike first, a bulldozing charge from prop Monty Raper seeing the Bosco junior crash over next to the posts.

The kick at goal was dragged left and waved away but the Sharks had the early lead at 4-0.

It didn't take long for the Sharks to add to their lead and it came from the same combination that terrorized the Eels in the Ball final a week earlier.

A passing move down the right found Jaemon Salmon, who put centre Bronso Xerri away, before Luke Metcalf backing up on the inside would dash away to score.

Metcalf converted his own try and the Sharks led 10-0.

The two teams then became locked into something of an arm wrestle and it appeared only 10-point would separate them at the break, but they didn't count on a strong Fine Kula try on the stroke of half time, with the Sharks going up 16-0.

Coming out with their confidence high the Sharks were first on the board again in the second period, Julian Spanos crossing wide out after a skillful exchange of passes and at 20-0 the Cronulla boys were riding high.

Metcalf then scored a second with around 14 minutes remaining off a clever inside ball from Salmon and it seemed as if it was game over at 26-0 Sharks.

But to their credit the Townsville boys didn't give up.

The first try may have been a lucky one after the goal post rebound but from there they chanced their arm, threw the ball around and worked their way back into the match.

The final try to the Stingers came with under two minutes left on the clock and while the coach may have been nervous watching on, the young Sharks held their nerve and defended the final period of the match to register the win.

The win to the Sharks was all the more meritorious considering their main attacking strike weapon Semisi Kioa missed the game after injuring his ankle in the SG Ball Grand Final against the Eels.

Again the Sharks had a number of strong performers on the day, the skill and toughness of Salmon on the edge proved a handful for the Stingers, while Raper in the middle had perhaps his best game of the 2015 Matthews Cup season.

Fullback Dylan Smith and skipper Lachlan Smith showed why they have been chosen in the NSW 16's Pathways team and hooker Tamati McCausland did a power of defensive work in the middle of the field.

JNR REPS – NATIONAL FINALS TEAM LISTS

After the euphoria of their Grand Final victories last weekend the Sharks Matthews Cup and SG Ball teams have the chance to create more history when they contest National Championship matches on Saturday.

The Matthews Cup Sharks were outstanding in beating the Eels 30-16 last weekend, while in the SG Ball decider it was again the Sharks, this time to the tune of 24-16 over the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

The Matthews Cup victory was the fourth in the history of the Cronulla club, the last win coming back in 2001, while it was the first-ever triumph for the Ball Sharks in the NSWRL under-18’s competition.

Courtesy of their wins, the Sharks now move on to contest National Finals against the Queensland champions the Townsville Stingers who like the Cronulla club were successful in taking out both their state age group titles.

The matches are set down for Belmore Sports Ground on Saturday, with the under-16’s match at 11.00am, the under-18’s at 1.00pm.

As was the case last weekend the games will be streamed live on the NSWRL and Sharks websites for those unable to make the trip to Belmore. Stay tuned throughout the week for more details.

The Sharks have released team lists for both matches and understandably coach’s Glenn Brailey and Dave Howlett have stuck solid with those players who got the job done in the respective Grand Finals last weekend.

And in further Junior Rep news, both Grand Finals will be shown on Fox Sports this week from 2.30pm on Thursday.

Check Foxtel guides for your local area to confirm.

AND of course OurFootyTeam.com will be there for all the FUN and ACTION - Up Up Cronulla !!

SHARKS SG BALL MAKE IT A DOUBLE
ourfooty media

In capping off a remarkable day for the club’s junior rep program, the SG Ball Sharks have scored a 24-16 win over Souths in the Grand Final.

After coming from eighth place after the home and away rounds, the Sharks certainly found some form in the finals series, with their win in the Grand Final the first victory in the NSWRL under-18’s competition in the history of the Cronulla club.

With the win coming on the back of the Matthews Cup victory earlier in the day, the Sharks certainly had plenty to celebrate following the two outstanding triumphs.

The first 10 minutes of the Grand Final went by without much incident but it would be the Sharks to first register points, with a try coming in almost an identical fashion to one from their win against the Panthers the week prior.

Sweeping the ball to the left fullback Will Kennedy dummied, then turned on the speed, slicing through a gap before running 20 metres to score.

Jack Williams wasn’t able to add the extras however the Sharks had their noses in front early at 4-0.

They didn’t have to wait long to add to their advantage, this time the try came down their attacking right when skipper Curtis Scott proved too strong for the cover.

Williams was on target with his second kick of the afternoon and the Sharks now led 10-0.

Things got even better for the Sharks from there, a Billy Magoulias try from close range, followed by a fourth four-pointer, this time scored by centre Keenan Yorston after some enterprising lead-up play and despite the conversions again drifting wide, the Cronulla side led 18-0.

Souths were able to give themselves some hope going into the break when their captain Siosifa Talakai crashed over however the Sharks would take a handy 12-point lead to half time.

Errors and a mounting penalty count against them had the Sharks under plenty of pressure for long periods in the second half and again as was the case in their preliminary final victory over the Panthers, the defense stood firm.

In fact it took 20 minutes before either side could trouble the scorers and it would be the Sharks who would cross with what was potentially the match-sealing try, winger Josh Tuilagi running over a number of defenders to get the ball down adjacent to the posts.

Williams was able to add the extras and the Sharks would certainly have liked their chances at 24-6 in front with a tick over 16 minutes remaining.

Souths however continued to fight and were rewarded for their efforts when lock Cameron Murray went over and it wasn’t quite the right time to start celebrating yet at 24-12 with eight to go.

Things would become even a little more tense in the coaching box when the Rabbitohs crossed for their third try but time would run out on their challenge as the young Sharks claimed a famous victory.

The Sharks win was built on a combination of perseverance and an excellent defensive commitment over the last three weeks of the season then the four finals matches.

The Sharks in fact won their last seven games to claim the Ball title.

Sharks prop Daniel Vasquez was named the official man-of-the-match for his wholehearted efforts in the middle of the field, but he had plenty of willing helpers on the afternoon.

Lock Billy Magoulias showed his class and experience with a polished performance, while Vasquez’ front row partner Brock Illet refused to take a backward step.

As he has been since switching to fullback mid season, Kennedy was a constant threat, with centres Scott and Yorston solid out wide.

As with their Matthews Cup counterparts the Ball Sharks now play for a National Championship next weekend when they take on the Townsville Stingers at Belmore Sports Ground.

In delivering an outstanding performance on the big day, the Matthews Cup Sharks have beaten the Parramatta Eels to claim their first NSWRL 16’s premiership since 2001.

The young Sharks turned in a brilliant all round display, their defensive effort frustrating their rivals, while as has been the case all the way through the finals series, they did more than enough with ball in hand to record a 30-16 triumph.

In front of a large and vocal crowd of excited fans, which included parents and friends as well as NRL skipper Paul Gallen and head coach Shane Flanagan, the Sharks led 10-6 at half time and never looked back.

The Sharks started strongly and it was man-of-the-match Jaemon Salmon who opened the scoring when he used a combination of footwork and strength to get through the line and plant the ball down.

The Eels responded to make it 6-4 but in a physical first 30 minutes the Sharks would score the only other points of the half, prop Fine Kula crashing over next to the uprights with a patented Cronulla play.

This time half back Luke Metcalf was able to add the extras to make it 10-6, a lead the Sharks would defend until the half time break.

The Sharks came out for the second period with similar purpose and enthusiasm that had given them the first half lead and it would be bustling centre Semisi Kioa scoring the first of two tries on the afternoon who added to the lead.

Metcalf was off target with his kick but the Sharks had a handy 14-6 lead early in the second half.

The Sharks defensive pressure continued to tell on the Eels and after Kioa had smashed his opposite number at one end in a legal yet brutal tackle, he would score shortly after at the other, skipping past a couple of defender to touch down wide out.

Metcalf was on target this time and the Sharks had what was a potential match winning lead at 20-6 in front but with plenty of time still to be played.

The Eels narrowed the margin with a try to make it 20-10 with 14 minutes remaining but that would be as close as they get.

The Sharks would score twice more, the first when Jack Gould slid over on the end of a backline play, the second to his inside man centre Bronson Xerri.

The Eels would score a consolation try in the final minutes but it was too little too late as the Sharks claimed an impressive victory and the Matthews Cup title.

The Sharks had too many outstanding performers to name them all, however lock and captain Lachlan Smith deserves praise for his wholehearted efforts, tackling himself into a standstill and he ably supported by his backrow partners Jay Shearman and Salmon who would later be named a worthy winner of man of the match.

In the backs fullback Dylan Smith was everywhere, Kioa his usual power of strength until injury forced him from the field, while Xerri capped off an excellent year with another top notch game in the centres.

And in an added bonus, four Sharks were selected in the NSW team to play before Origin 1, both Smith boys in Lachlan and Dylan, halfback Metcalf and backrower Salmon.

The Matthews Cup Sharks now go on to play for the under-16 National Championship against the Townsville Stingers at Belmore Sports Ground next weekend.

SHARKS MAKE HISTORY

DON'T turn off that porch light just yet, Sharkies fans.

If your junior representative sides are any indicator, Harold Holt may yet return. Cronulla's SG Ball and Harold Matthews teams have made their respective grand finals, and with the NRL side enjoying a youth-inspired revival, the future looks bright in the Shire.

This is the first time in their history that Cronulla have made both junior representative grand finals in the same year.

In the Harold Matthews, Jack Gould, the son of premiership-winning coach and Channel 9 commentator Phil ‘Gus' Gould crossed the stripe to propel the black, white and blue to a 38-18 win over Canterbury. The Sharks will face minor premiers Parramatta, who walloped Balmain 38-8.

The SG Ball final will be replay of the 1981 Tooth Cup final with Cronulla taking on Souths at Leichhardt Oval. Cronulla qualified with a 12-0 shutout of Penrith, while the Rabbitohs beat Manly 14-10.

The Queensland junior representative season wrapped up last week with Townsville sweeping the Cyril Connell and Mal Meninga Cup double.

The Connell final was a thriller, with halfback Jack Nosworthy kicking a golden point field goal to beat Sunshine Coast Falcons 31-30. In the Meninga Cup the Stingers triumphed over Easts 30-24.

Meanwhile, Titans winger Kalifa Faifai Loa put aside his recent troubles by scoring two tries in Queensland Residents' 36-32 win over the NSW Cup representative side. Melbourne-contracted half Shaun Nona and Broncos-contracted hooker Matt Parcell starred for the banana benders.

Story By : Rob Willis Sharks Media Manager
Photo's By : steve monty / ourfooty media

In a brilliant display of attacking football despite slippery and soggy conditions at St Mary’s Leagues Stadium, the Sharks Matthews Cup team has qualified for the Grand Final with a convincing 38-18 victory over the Bulldogs.

The young Sharks jumped out to a 26 to 12 half time advantage and despite a few anxious moments proved far too good for their opponents as they went on to set up a match up with the Parramatta Eels in the competition decider.

The Sharks were on the front foot early when centre Semisi Kioa crashed over wide out, with his try followed up by a equally impressive charge from prop Fine Kula who crossed shortly after.

Luke Metcalf converted the second of the two tries and the Sharks led 10-0.

A mistake from the kickoff however gifted the Bulldogs the football and field position and they were good enough to capitalise, with prop Evander Swann running into a gap from close the Sharks posts.

The try was converted and the Sharks lead had been narrowed to 10-6 after 15 minutes of the match had gone.

From there the under-16 Sharks applied the pressure, with Kula proving too strong in going over for a second, before backrower Jaemon Salmon used good footwork to extend the lead, making it 20-6 with 10 minutes of the first half remaining.

The Bulldogs responded with a clever try from a scrum move, before an outstanding long range effort from the Sharks, Salmon slicing through before finding Bronson Xerri in support, with Metcalf backing up on the inside to slide over adjacent to the uprights.

When Metcalf added the extras it was 26-12 to the Sharks who would go to the break with their tails well and truly up.

In a great start to the second half it was again Salmon and Xerri combining as the centre dashed into open space, with jack Gould this time accepting the final pass to score the Sharks sixth try of the afternoon.

Again Metcalf was on target and the Sharks had a commanding 32-12 lead.

With rain beginning to the fall points then became hard to come by and while the Bulldogs did manage a try with some 14 minutes to go to reduce the margin to 14, the Sharks would well and truly go on with the job.

Final points went to Salmon, who was amongst the Sharks best on the day, with the local De La Salle product slicing through from 10 metres out to complete the scoring.

Metcalf would add a penalty goal as the full time siren was sounding in seeing the Sharks into their first Matthews Cup Grand Final in over a decade.

The Sharks had too many good players to single any out, with every player doing their job on the day.

The 2015 Matts Cup Sharks will look to lift the trophy for the first time since 2001 when they take on the Eels next weekend.

The Eels finished first after the regular season, the Sharks fifth.

The Sharks website will communicate kickoff times and a venue when they become available.

BALL SHARKS BOUNCE THE PANTHERS

ourfooty media
In an outstanding defensive display the SG Ball Sharks have qualified for the Grand Final with a gutsy 12-0 win over the Panthers

In sloppy conditions as rain fell throughout the match, the SG Ball Sharks have turned in a committed defensive performance in beating the Penrith Panthers 12-0 to qualify for the Grand Final.

The Sharks repelled numerous attacking raids from their opponents and did just enough with the football to cross for two tries as they set up a Grand Final match up with South Sydney next weekend.

With forward Daniel Vasquez, Billy Magoulias and Brock Illet laying the platform in the middle, the backs more than did their job in shutting down the Panthers out wide as they continually frustrated their opponents with stifling defense.

Points were at a premium so when fullback Will Kennedy dummied and sliced through before running 20 metres to score in the 12th minute, while only 6-0 up after the Jack Williams conversion it was a handy lead in the conditions.

For the remainder of the first half both sides had their chances but neither would be able to trouble the scoreboard operator before the break as the teams went to half time with the Sharks a converted try in front.

The rain got heavier and the ball more difficult to handle but sticking to a simple game plan of defending stoutly and kicking Penrith into the corners at the end of their attacking sets, the Sharks refused to concede as time continued to tick and the Panthers became more and more frustrated.

After gaining repeat sets on the Sharks line it seemed only a matter of time until the highly favoured Penrith team would level the scores but that wasn’t to be as momentum shifted back on favour of the young Cronulla side.

After bombing what could have been the match winner just minutes earlier the Sharks wouldn’t be denied only six minutes from time when Jaiden Brown with a show and go from 10 metres out with slide over to put the result beyond doubt.

It was an inspirational win by the under-18 Sharks against a team tipped by many to claim the SG Ball crown in 2015.

The Sharks now move onto the competition decider against Souths next weekend as they attempt to win the first SG Ball trophy in the history of the competition.

They join their Matthews Cup counterparts in the Grand Final in setting up an exciting weekend for the Cronulla junior representative program.

The Sharks website will communicate a venue and kickoff time for the SG Ball and Matthews Cup Grand Finals when they become available.

SG BALL - Elimination Final

Parramatta Eels sg ballParramatta EELS 24 - 25 Cronulla SHARKS Cronulla juniors

The Cronulla Sutherland Sharks Harold Matthews & SG Ball Cup sides are now through to the next round of the NSWRL Junior Reps Finals Series after both teams won their Elimination Finals today.

The Sharks SG Ball side kicked off the day out at Penrith Stadium taking on a red hot Parramatta Eels side.

The Cronulla boiz played like serious contenders in this Elimination Final dominating the game and scoreboard at the half.

The Eels hit first when Anthony Layoun crossed in the corner for the first of his 3 tries, it was only a few plays later when Brock Ilett ran through the Parra line to race away & score under the posts, Jack Williams converted the Shire Boiz were in front of the Elimination Final.

It only took a couple sets due to some strong Parra defence, but then big Billy Magoulias recieved the ball from about 15 out and simpily out muscled the Eels to push his way over for his 1st try of the finals

Sharks Skipper Curtis Scott finished an excellent first half by the Cronulla boiz scoring to give the Sharks a half time lead of 10 - 24

The 2nd half the Eels hit back hard from the outset, controlling the ball and their own sets and were rewarded with 14 unanswered points to level the scores leaving an very intence 10 minutes.

The ball went to very part of the field as both team scrambled to get close enough to pot a field goal, the Eels got there first, but missed. Cronulla regained the footy and charged home and with a minute on the clock, 5/8 Kyle Flanagan stepped a couple defenders and calmly booted the Field Goal to give the Sharks a sweet win over the Parramatta Eels.

Despite going down by 20-10 in their last round match against Souths the Matthews Cup Sharks have still qualified for the competition finals.

With injuries in a few key positions disrupting their preparation and throwing out the combinations built up in recent weeks, the Sharks were below their best as they failed to recover from a 14-0 half time deficit in the match played at Redfern Oval.

After what would have been a half time rev-up from coach Glenn Brailey the Sharks showed signs of improvement in the early stages of the second period and when Fine Kula crashed over for their first points, converted by half back Luke Metcalf, at 14-6 behind it was anyone’s game.

Unfortunately for the Sharks an error from the ensuing kick off gifted Souths field position and when rangy centre Campbell Graham crossed shortly after the margin was back out to 14 with the Rabbits up 20-6.

Leading the way for the Sharks Kula proved too strong in going over for his second, but that would be as close as the visitors would get as the young Souths side defended grimly to ensure their place in the top eight.

For the Sharks the loss means they slip out of the top four and therefore lose their second chance in the finals series and in finishing fifth have set up a likely matchup with the Manly Sea Eagles.

The Sharks finishing position and finals opponent will be confirmed once all results from the weekend matches are complete.

The Matthews Sharks wound up on 11 competition points from their nine matches, made up of four wins, three losses, a draw and a bye.

SG BALL – SHARKS SNEAK IN
ourfooty media
In perhaps their most physical performance of the 2015 SG Ball season the Sharks have beaten Souths 20-8 to extend their season by sneaking into the top eight.

Needing a win to give themselves any chance, the Sharks slipped behind 2-0 early but after that early penalty goal never trailed again in the match.

A well worked back line move saw stand-in fullback Will Kennedy put winger Josh Tuilagi over wide out and when Jack Williams converted the Sharks led 6-2.

With the momentum well and truly in their favour the under-18 Sharks would score twice more in the opening half, the first by Billy Magoulias, the second when Jesse Savage crashed through and dashed 25 metres in a blockbusting charge.

Williams managed to kick one out of the two conversion attempts and the Sharks led 16-2 at half time.

With both sides lifting the defensive intensity in the second period points were at a premium, however when Williams dived over from dummy half to make it 20-6, the result was virtually out of reach for the Rabbitohs.

The home team gave themselves hope when half back Kurtis Preece dashed past some tired defense, but that would be as close as they would get as the Sharks held on for a much-needed win.

The Sharks had a number of quality performers on the day, with Tuilagi very involved from the left wing, Magoulias and Daniel Vasquez strong in the middle of the field and Kennedy enterprising in the fullback role.

Five eighth Jaiden Brown also played well against his former club in his first match back after a lengthy stint on the sideline after breaking his jaw in round one.

The Sharks finals opponent and finishing position will be confirmed tomorrow when all round nine matches are complete however they can’t be knocked of eighth place with their opponent likely to be either Parramatta or Newcastle, two teams they have played already during the 2015 season.

The Sharks website will publish the finals opponent, venue and kick off time once it becomes available.

PATHWAY TO ORIGIN FOR JUNIOR SHARKS
ourfooty media
Seven Cronulla Sharks junior representative players have been selected to attend Origin Pathway Camps ahead of this year’s State of Origin series.

Having performed strongly in the Harold Matthews and SG Ball competitions respectively, the junior Sharks are now in line to make appearances at State level.

If successful at the Camp, the junior Sharks will play in the U16s or U18s Origin games, which will be held as curtain raisers at two of this year’s Origin fixtures.

Vinh Tran, Development Manager at the Sharks, says the juniors will take a lot out of the Camps.

"It's a great opportunity for these boys as they will get an insight into what it takes to be a NSW Origin player,” said Tran.

“The focus for these camps is not just skills on the field but things like mental toughness and leadership.

“They will get to mix with some of the best players in their age group from across NSW, as well as get coaching from the NSW Origin staff and advice from NSW legends like Brad Fittler.”

Although well aware of the quality of talent spread across the NSWRL junior representative leagues, Tran is confident that the seven Sharks will do the club proud.

"All of the boys who are part of the camp have been playing terrific footy for us in the junior rep competition so they all have a really good shot at being selected,” he said.

“Regardless of how they go with final selection, it is great to see seven of our local junior players get some worthy recognition."

The Cronulla Sharks congratulate the players on their Camp selection, and wish them the very best in earning a Blues call-up.

HAROLD MATTS CUP MATCH REPORT – ROUND 8

In a dominating performance the Matthews Cup Sharks have scored an impressive 42-0 victory over the St George Dragons, with the win confirming their place in the upcoming finals series with one round of the regular season left to be played.

In an entertaining performance the Sharks threw the ball around despite the slippery conditions and dominated their opponents throughout, with the only negative being a sloppy finish to the game which saved the Dragons from even further embarrassment.

The start of the match didn’t provide too much of a pointer for what was to come, with the teams seeming to be evenly match as the Sharks held a narrow 4-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes.

From there however they lifted a notch and three more first half tries, all converted by half back Luke Metcalf, taking the young Sharks out to a match-winning 22-0 advantage at the break.

One of the Sharks three tries was scored by Metcalf after a spectacular 60-metre individual effort, while centre Bronson Xerri crossed for two of what would be three tries for the youngster on the day.

Coming out for the second period with renewed vigour the Dragons threatened early, but after weathering the storm the next 15 minutes were one way traffic, three more Sharks tries taking the score line out to 38-0, sealing the result and a finals berth for the under 16 Cronulla side.

The final 15 minutes was marred by errors, with coach Glenn Brailey certain to be happy with the victory, but slightly disappointed by the finish to the match, with a Jaemon Salmon try on the stroke of full time completing the scoring.

While 42 points will assist the Sharks for-and-against percentage should they finished tied with the other finals aspirants, keeping their opponents to zero would also have pleased the Matthews Cup coaching staff, especially with their effort late in the game when the Dragons enjoyed a lions-share of the possession.

The Matthews Cup Sharks move to 11 competition points and with a victory over Souths in their last match could wind up as high as fourth on the final competition ladder.

SG BALL MATCH REPORT – ROUND 8

In a game of fluctuating fortunes, the SG Ball Sharks have kept their finals hopes alive with a 30-22 triumph over St George in their round eight match at Remondis Stadium.

The Sharks fell behind early, fought back to lead at half time, extended that advantage after the break, before trailing with 10 minutes left in the match.

Showing good composure they would fight back in final period of the game, with two late tries ensuring a much-needed win.

It was a horrible start for the Sharks, two Dragon tries in the opening 10 minutes of the contests seeing the visitors go to a 10-0 lead.

From there however they managed to work their way back into the game and exploited an advantage down their right hand side in attack, with winger Chris Tupou crossing for two tries, before skipper Curtis Scott would go over in giving his team a 14-10 lead at the half time break.

The Sharks were first to score through Cameron Scott in the opening exchanges of the second period to make it 18-10, before momentum shifted on the back of a handful of Cronulla errors.

A forward pass from the ruck put the Dragons on the offensive and they capitalized with a soft try from dummy half through their hooker Reece Robson, before the ensuing kick off went out on the full, again inviting the St George team into an attacking position.

And once more they would make the Sharks pay, centre Lachlan Hughes beating a handful of defenders to crash over adjacent to the uprights.

With both tries converted the Dragons would lead 22-18 midway through the second-half.

But the Sharks were far from finished, a spectacular leaping try from Amo Lualua from a Jack Williams cross kick leveled the scores, before Williams put his team in from with the conversion attempt.

Keeping the pressure on the Sharks continued to attack a tired Dragons defense, with five eighth Kyle Flanagan dummying his way through to score from close range to confirm the result.

The win was a crucial one for the under-18 Cronlla side, who now go to nine competition points in giving them hope of qualifying for finals with one game remaining.

For the Sharks lock Billy Magoulias was involved in everything in a non-stop 70 minute effort, centre Curtis Scott terrorized his opposite number, while props Brock Ilett and Justin Timu both made successful returns after lengthy stints on the sideline with injury.

The final match for the Ball Sharks will be against South Sydney next Saturday.

NYC Match Report - Sharks v Titans
ourfooty media

The NYC Sharks have opened their account in style in scoring an impressive 30-12 win over the Gold Coast Titans in their round four match at Remondis Stadium.

In their most complete performance of the 2015 season, the young Sharks controlled the first half to lead 18-6 and went on with the job in the second 40, with their defensive commitment a feature of the game.

The Titans were first on the board through five eight Kane Lawton as they grabbed an early 6-0 lead but the remainder of the first half went all the Sharks way.

First it was lock Francis Laloua-Tui crashing over adjacent to the posts, before skipper Anthony Moraitis crossed wide out.

Jamayne Isaako was on target for both conversion attempts and the Sharks would go to the front 12-6.

Some dogged Sharks defense kept the Titans at bay for the rest of the half and just when it looked as though the home team would go to the break with a six point lead, halfback Connor Tracey sliced through from close range to send the Cronulla side to half time with a nice 18-6 advantage.

Again the Sharks showed an aggression and enthusiasm in the second 40 minutes somewhat missing from their first three matches and their attitude was rewarded when Josh Addo-Carr broke the Titans defensive line and streaked 80-metres stretch the Cronulla lead.

Once more Isaako added the extras and the Sharks had a match-winning lead at 24-6 in front.

Jayden Brailey then dived over from dummy half to make it 30-6 with only 10 minutes remaining, sealing the NYC Sharks first win of the 2015 season.

The Titans managed a late try but it would be too little too late as the Sharks opened their account with the impressive 30-12 victory.

The only sour note to come from the win was a late injury to Tracey, with the medical team to assess the severity of the problem during the week.

SG Ball Match Report – Round 7
ourfooty media

The SG Ball Sharks, in perhaps their most complete performance of the season so far, have beaten the Illawarra Steelers 34-16 at Remondis Stadium.

Playing a side well-entrenched inside the top eight, the Sharks jumped out to a first half lead courtesy of three Billy Magoulias tries and were never headed, going on to cross the stripe six times on the night.

Sitting in 12th place before the weekend round of matches, the Sharks kept their finals hopes alive with two rounds of the SG Ball competition remaining.

The start of the match hardly gave anyone the impression the Sharks had the game to challenge the Steelers, with the visitors scoring twice, one a 100-metre runaway, to jump out to a 12-0 advantage.

The next period of the match then became the Magoulias ‘show’, with the Sharks lock in the middle of the action in showing his abilities and experience as he crossed for three consecutive tries, all converted by Jack Williams and all of a sudden the Sharks had assumed a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Jesse Savage, a damaging runner on the Sharks left hand side, went over for his teams fourth early in the second period, before Cam Scott virtually sealed the win when he touched down from a Kyle Flanagan kick to make it 34-12 with less than a quarter of the match to go.

Luis Strickland then went over wide out to put the result beyond doubt.

The Steelers managed a consolation try late in the contest but the Sharks had done enough to record just their second win of the 2015 season, but a victory which sees them move to seven competition points and well and truly into contention for a top eight berth.

Magoulias’s first half was outstanding in helping to set up the win, Savage ran hard all night, while prop Daniel Vasquez was a tower of strength in the middle of the field.

Captain Curtis Scott was his usual busy self, while Flanagan in the halves had some classy touches.

The Ball Sharks now have two matches remaining, against the Dragons and Rabbitohs and will need to win both matches to qualify for the finals.

HAROLD MATTS CUP MATCH REPORT – Round 7
ourfooty media

In a match pivotal to their finals aspirations, the Matthews Cup Sharks have held off a determined Illawarra Steelers to win 28-22 in their Friday night match-up at Remondis Stadium.

Starting the game in seventh place and equal on points with the Steelers, the Sharks had their moments, scoring some excellent tries, but at the same time letting themselves down with some simple errors.

In the final washup however the under-16’s Sharks showed good courage and commitment to break at 22-all deadlock with a late try which would seal the win.

The Steelers were on the board early with a long-range try but the momentum quickly shifted and consecutive tries to Kai Broadhurst, then Trace Davidson after a Broadhurst kick, put the Sharks on top by 12-4.

The young Sharks continued to press and when Bronson Xerri dived over wide out at 16-4 the home team was well on top.

Sharks mistakes and a couple of Steeler penalties invited their opponents back into the match, with an Illawarra try, converted from close range, making it 16-10 with half time approaching.

Enjoying a little bit of luck another Broadhurst kick resulted in a try when the bounce of the ball favoured half back Luke Metcalf with the Sharks going to the break ahead 22-10.

The Steelers scored early in the second period to make it 22-16, before a try with 14 minutes remaining, which was converted, leveled the scores and set up a grandstand finish.

While last weekend against the Raiders the Sharks failed to hold out their opponents and were forced to settle for a draw, this time around they would be denied, big front rower Fine Kula crashing over under the posts to put his team in front seven minutes from time.

Despite a few anxious moments the Sharks would hold on, claiming two points that will certainly prove valuable in their fight for a finals berth.

The win will consolidate the Matthews Sharks position inside the top eight, with games against the Dragons and Rabbitohs to finish their regular season.

SHARKS JUNIOR REP TEAM LISTS – ROUND 7

Both Sharks junior rep teams face matches vital to their finals chances when they host the Illawarra Steelers at Remondis Stadium on Friday night.

The seventh-placed Matthews Cup Sharks play a Steelers team in eighth but also on seven competition points, with the winner of the match going a long way towards cementing a finals berth.

As for the SG Ball Sharks, nothing short of a victory is required to keep them in the running for a place in the top eight.

The Sharks are currently 12th, albeit just two points from the eighth-placed South Sydney Rabbitohs, while the Steelers have enjoyed a strong start to the Junior rep season and sit in fourth position on the ladder.

With the Sharks v Titans match on Saturday, the junior rep matches will now be played on Friday evening at Remondis Stadium, with the Matthews Cup getting underway at 6.00pm, the SG Ball at 7.45pm.

JNR REPS MATCH REPORT – ROUND 6

It was a case of missed opportunities for the Sharks junior rep sides with a draw and a last minute loss in matches played against the Raiders at Seiffert Oval in Canberra last weekend.

In the Matthews Cup the Sharks led everywhere except at the finishing line, with the Raiders scoring and converting in the dying moments to force a 20-all draw.

In the SG Ball in a topsy-turvey contest the Sharks trailed 16-4 at half time, fought back and led 24-22 with time running out, before a try with only two minutes remaining on the clock seeing the Canberra team steal a 28-24 win.

With the disappointing endings in the round six matches the Matthews Sharks are clinging to a spot in the top eight, while in the Ball nothing short of three wins from their last three matches will see the under-18 Cronulla side qualify for the semi-finals.

In the Matthews Cup the Sharks were well in control in the first half, racing to a 14-0 lead at the break.

The Raiders scored early to make it 14-4, however another converted try to the young Sharks made it 20-4 with less than 15 minutes of the match left on the clock and victory seemed assured.

From that point on momentum shifted, with three Canberra tries, two of them converted, in the last 12 minutes of the match leaving the Sharks flat and the home team jubilant in the fact that had snuck out of the game with one competition point.

For the Sharks prop Fine Kula, fullback Dylan Smith and half back Luke Metcalf were amongst the Sharks best.

In the SG Ball match that followed the game followed a vastly different path, with the Canberra 18’s well on top in the opening 35 minutes as they went to the break ahead by 16-4, a Daniel Vasquez try the only Sharks points.

Whatever was said at half time however had the desired effect on the Sharks, with three tries in the first 10 minutes, to Jesse Savage, Curtis Scott and Kyle Flanagan, seeing them take the lead 1t 22-16 in front.

A Jack Williams penalty goal extended the advantage to eight points, but with 18 minutes left in the match there was still plenty of time for the Raiders to mount a comeback of their own, which is exactly what they did.

A converted try to Canberra made it 24-22 with 14 to go, and just when it had appeared the Sharks had weathered the storm, another try two minutes from time sent the Cronulla boys home a dejected group.

Backrower Savage, prop Vasquez and SG Ball captain Curtis Scott received praise from coach Dave Howlett for their efforts on the day.

With three rounds remaining the Matthews Sharks sit in seventh place, the SG Ball in 12th.

The Sharks now return home for round seven matches against the Illawarra Steelers, scheduled to be played on Friday night at Remondis Stadium. Kick off times are 6.00pm (Matthews Cup) and 7.45pm (SG Ball).

JNR REP TEAM LISTS – ROUND 6
ourfooty media
The junior rep season is approaching the business end with both Sharks sides facing a tough road trip and matches against the Canberra Raiders this Saturday which are critical to their finals aspirations.

Sitting in sixth position but just one point ahead of this weekend’s opponents, the Matthews Cup Sharks will be looking to establish their place inside the top eight when they tackle the Raiders at Seiffert Oval.

Following back-to-back wins over the Roosters and Knights the under-16 Sharks will head to the National Capital full of confidence but needing to produce their best once again should they hope to come away with the points.

In the SG Ball the Sharks take on a Canberra squad nicely positioned towards the top of a table in what is shaping as a must-win match for Cronulla team currently sitting 12th. Close enough if good enough, the Sharks have four matches still to be played in the season proper but are desperate for the points on Saturday.

The Under-18 Sharks were somewhat unlucky not to come away with a victory, or at least a point, in scoring three tries apiece in an 18-12 loss to the Knights last weekend and will be hoping for a change in fortunes this time around.

The matches are scheduled for 2.00pm (Matthews Cup) and 3.30pm (SG Ball) kick offs at Seiffert Oval.

Matts Cup Match Report - Round 5 ourfooty media

In backing up their first win of the 2015 season the week prior, the under 16 Matthews Cup Sharks have scored an impressive 40-14 win over the Newcastle Knights.

A game were the two teams were perhaps more evenly matched than the final score may have indicated, the Sharks wrapped up the win with four tries, some of them spectacular long-range efforts, in the final 15 minutes.

It was a win which consolidated the Sharks spot inside the top eight and sets them on a course for a run to the competition finals with four rounds remaining.

The Sharks began strongly and were well in control of proceedings in the first half, going to the break 22-4 up on the strength of tries to five eighth Kai Broadhurst, centre Semisi Kioa, prop Fine Kula and backrower Jay Shearman.

Responding to what would have been a lively half time address the Knights came out and pressured the young Sharks with the momentum shifting in their favour.

An early try to their gun five eight Tex Hoy narrowed the margin to 12 points and it was only some desperate Sharks defense that kept it from being even tighter.

Kioa gave the Sharks some breathing space with a sparkling 40-metre individual effort to take the score out to 28-10 and while Hoy was able to grab a second to make it 28-14, that would be as close as the visitors would get.

Further tries to Metlcalf, who showed great speed to spring away from the Knights defense, then Bronson Xerri backing up a Kioa line break and the Sharks had registered a win which is sure to give them a shot of confidence heading into the business end of the season.

The Sharks had a host of impressive performers, with Kioa devastating on the left hand side, while Dylan Smith in his second game at fullback was safe while being dangerous with ball in hand.

Sharks coach Glenn Brailey will now try to get his teams’ feet back on the ground and get them back to work at training this week ahead of a tough road trip next weekend when they face the Raiders in Canberra.

SG Ball Match Report - Round 5 ourfooty media

Despite scoring three tries apiece the SG Ball Sharks have fallen just short in a high quality game, going down by 18-12 to a committed Newcastle Knights side.

The Sharks battled back from a 16-4 half time deficit to give themselves a chance at 16-12 with time left on the clock, however a Knights penalty goal completed the scoring and left the under-18 Cronulla side with some work to do over the final four rounds of the competition.

Newcastle scored first but the Sharks responded quickly, William Kennedy, deputising for injured number seven Jack Williams crossing for his teams’ first points.

The conversion from close range unfortunately missed to the left, leaving the Knights up by two points early in the contest.

Newcastle managed two more first half tries, one a spectacular long-range effort from their red-headed halfback Brendan O’Hagan, in going to the break with a handy 16-4 advantage.

The Sharks showed plenty of fight after half time and it was Jesse Savage who would edge them closer, the hard running back rower crashing through the defensive line to score wide out .

When the conversion attempt from Kyle Flanagan bounced off the right hand upright the score read 16-8 to the Knights but the Sharks had their tails up and plenty of time left on the clock.

Now with the momentum the Sharks crossed again, Kennedy showing great skill and pace to score a second and despite the conversion attempt again being unsuccessful at 16-12 Knights it was definitely game on.

The Sharks had a chance to level the score when a perfectly weighted Flanagan cross-field kick was dropped over the line, with the Knights marching up the field to kick the penalty goal and ultimately seal the result.

While the effort shown would have pleased Sharks coach Dave Howlett a lack of discipline a ball control at vital times would proved decisive in the final wash up.

The SG Ball Sharks will now join their Matthews Cup counterparts on a road trip to Canberra next week in what shapes as a very important match in terms of the Sharks finals aspirations.

SG BALL ROUND 4 – MATCH REPORT
ourfooty media
With a strong defensive effort paving the way, the SG Ball Sharks have beaten the defending SG Ball premiers the Sydney Roosters in a round four match played at Henson Park.

The Sharks weathered an early storm, took control in the first half and did more than enough in the second 35 minutes in coming away 28-10 victors.

The win, coupled with a draw and a first round bye have the Sharks nicely position on the ladder after the first four rounds of the competition.

The game started in ominous fashion when the Roosters exploited an overlap to score what was a somewhat soft try, but from there the Sharks knuckled down to the task and worked their way back into the contest.

First points came from a show and go try from half back Jack Williams that leveled the score, before prop Louis Strickland with clever footwork and good speed went over adjacent to the posts.

Williams converted the second of the two tries and the Sharks led 10-4.

With field possession in their favour the Sharks went further ahead following a brilliant individual effort from Cameron Scott, the fullback darting through the heart of the ruck to score from 20 metres out.

The Scott try and Williams conversion made the score16-4 at half time.

After neither side could assert any dominance in the opening period of the second half it was a Sharks error that would allow the Roosters back into the game.

After the Sharks failed to recover a chip kick just two tackles the Roosters narrowed the margin with a try from a nicely worked play from close range and with the conversion it was 16-10 to Cronulla with 25 minutes of the match remaining.

However just when it appeared the Roosters were getting on top, a line break from winger Josh Tuilagi put his team on the front foot, then some individual brilliance from Curtis Scott, who flicked the ball inside for Chris Tupou, to go over and when Williams kicked the goal from the sideline the Sharks again had a handy lead at 22-10 in front.

A penalty goal took the score out to 24-10, before a determined individual effort from Keenan Yorston, the centre pushing off a couple of would-be defenders to score in the corner.

Williams couldn't add the extra two points as the fulltime siren sounded on a 28-10 Sharks win.

The next assignment for the SG Ball Sharks is a match against the Newcastle Knights next Saturday afternoon at Remondis Stadium.

MATTS CUP ROUND 4 – MATCH REPORT
ourfooty media

A dominant second half performance has seen the under-16 Matthew Cup Sharks score an impressive 34-12 victory over the Sydney Roosters in their round four match.

The Sharks were in control early, three tries seeing them race to a 14-0 advantage, however a lapse in concentration and some good ply from their opponents saw the Roosters cross the stripe twice to narrow the margin to just two points at the half time break.

Where the under-16 Sharks have failed to take advantage of winning opportunities in narrow losses over the past two weeks, this time around the they came out for the second period with plenty of intensity and purpose with their efforts quickly rewarded.

After a long break down the left hand side from centre Semisi Koa the Sharks went deep into attack it was five eight Kai Broadhurst who would capitalize, the youngster scoring from close range to extend the lead to 18-12.

With the conversion from half back Luke Metcalf it was 20-12 Sharks but the momentum and run of play was in their favour and continued to exploit the Roosters out wide with Jaemon Salmon striding out before sending Metcalf on a 30-metre run to the line to make it 26-12.

Not long after it Fine Kula crashing over adjacent to the posts to put the result beyond doubt.

A penalty goal to Metcalf made it 34-12 in completing the scoring.

While admitting his team had further improvement in them, Coach Glenn Brailey was pleased with the performance and happy to chalk up an important win which keeps his team within striking distance of the top eight.

“We were good after half time,” Brailey said. “I thought everybody did their job but if I was going to single anyone out it was the best performance from out halves so far this year.

“Hopefully Kia and Luke will get some confidence from today and continue to improve.”

With two points from a bye and two close losses before today's victory the Matthews Sharks are now on four competition points after four rounds of the season.

LOST OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG SHARKS
ourfooty media

For both Sharks junior rep teams it was a case of lost opportunities with the Ball Sharks squandering a lead and the Matthews Cup side not able to get over the top of the Bulldogs in a close loss in round three matches played on Saturday.

The Ball Sharks had their game well and truly under control before an in-goal error saw the Bulldogs snatch a last minute 16-all draw, while in the Under 16’s Matthew match the young Cronulla side failed to take advantage of superior field position and a number of scoring chances in going down 12-10 in a nail-biter.

The draw in the SG Ball match hardly told the story of a Sharks side that was dominant for large periods of the game. The Sharks were in front 16-4 and could have extended their lead however a lost ball when attempting to score kept their opponents in the match.

The Under-18 Sharks again had the chance to ice a win with under eight minutes remaining when a shot at penalty goal was waved away, keeping the score at 16-4, before the dramatic finish saw the Dogs storm back into the contest.

A converted try saw the lead narrowed to 16-10, before a bizarre moment less then two minutes from time, the Sharks spilling the ball in the in-goal area only to see the Bulldogs touch down for a try, followed by a conversion from the touch-line, resulting in a drawn result.

For the Ball Sharks halfback Kyle Flanagan played strongly in his first game in the 18’s team, with his kicking game a feature. He was ably supported by Curtis Scott and Billy Magoulias with the experienced pair amongst their teams’ best.

In the Matthews Cup it could best be described as one that got away in a 12-10 loss to the Bulldogs in the match played at Remondis Stadium.

Like their SG Ball counterparts the Sharks seemed well in control of the match and in going to the break up by 10-6 it appeared they might be good enough to secure their first win of the 2015 junior rep season.

Unfortunately that wasn’t the way it panned out, with a Bulldogs try giving them a narrow two point lead which they would manage to defend until the fulltime siren.

The mixed results against the Bulldogs have now left the two Sharks teams with important games coming up next weekend when they travel to Henson Park to take on the Roosters.

Those matches are scheduled for 12 noon and 1.30pm kick offs, with a NSW game featuring the Newtown Jets, the Sharks partners in the NSW Cup competition, to play the Wests Tigers at 3.00pm.

JUNIOR REPS TEAM LISTS - ROUND THREE

Story By : Ryan Selvage
Photo's By :

The Cronulla Sharks junior representative team lists have been announced ahead of their respective round three matches this weekend.

Remondis Stadium will play host to the Bulldogs across the Harold Matthews and SG Ball competitions, with the Sharks looking to bounce back from last start losses in both grades.

The Harold Matthews side showed signs of promise against Parramatta last weekend, and despite going down 22-10, the team remains hopeful of reversing their fortunes against Canterbury this time around.

The SG Ball squad were also unable to notch a win, with the Parramatta under 18s proving too strong in running out 40-14 victors at Blacktown Patrician Brothers College.

The Sharks will take some solace in knowing the side was not at full strength, with injuries at key moments to key players having detracted from the side’s fluency in attack.

The Matthews Cup match is scheduled for a 12-noon kick off, with the SG Ball to get underway at 1.30pm.

NO ONE SINGS UP UP CRONULLA THIS WEEK

All five grades played on Saturday and no one got to sing Up Up Cronulla, sad

The Harold Matthews Cup team played a red hot Parramatta EELS side fresh from smashing the Roosters last week were expected to blow the SHarks away, in the end the Eels won, the score may have been 22 - 10 to the Eels, but that includes 2 tries the Eels scored in about 5 minutes.

The boiz made plenty of mistakes, dropped the footy, simple and easy things to fix, they also played some great footy for a few minutes here and there, they will improve on this week with a bit of battle experience under their belts.

The SG Ball side were smashed on the scoreboard, but the game wasn't quiet like that, the Eels were lucky for almost 20 of their points, the Sharks played like they should in periods and lack of match fitness & nerves caused a few errors and fumbles which the Eels were good enough to hammer us for.. FINAL HIT OUT FOR YOUNG SHARKS

ourfooty media
For the Matthews Cup and SG Ball Sharks there were some encouraging signs in their final trial matches when they took on the Newcastle Knights, while the Sharks Academy teams enjoyed solid hit outs in games played against the Bulldogs last Saturday.

The Under-16 Matthews Cup Sharks wound up their pre-season preparations when they hosted the Knights at Remondis Stadium in a match where they may have been edged out 26-24 in the final wash however an outstanding first half provided a pointer to what will hopefully be a successful season ahead.

The young Sharks jumped out to a 16-4 lead over the traditionally strong Newcastle team, with Dylan Smith crossing for two of his teams’ tries in the first period.

As Vinh Tran Sharks Development Manager explained, Newcastle responded after the break, edged in front then held on for a win against a Sharks side who tried hard throughout.

“We had a great first half, with some excellent scrambling cover defence and strong goal line defence,” Tran said. “In the second half errors and a few defensive lapses proved costly but overall it was a solid performance from the Matthews boys.

“Our middles were good, with Fine, Pita and Monty off the bench playing well, Lachie Smith was busy at lock and did well when sent into the unfamiliar position of hooker. Jaeman Salmon also had a few good touches and created a good try for the team.”

As for the under-18 Ball squad, again it was a game of two halves, with the Sharks strong in the opening period, only to see the Knights dominate just after the break and emerge 24-16 winners.

“It was a positive first half by our boys in what was a hard fought game. Neither side was able to post points for the first part 15 minutes with the defence very good from both teams,” Tran said, with the Sharks going to half time ahead 8-6.

The Knights then managed to assert some authority, take a commanding lead, before holding on in the face of a late Sharks challenge.

“Newcastle put us under a lot of pressure and dominated possession, which saw them jump out to a good lead. To the credit of our team they came back at them but in the end time ran out,” Tran added.

“Keenan Yorston, Jaiden Brown and Amo Lualua down our left edge were very good, creating a couple of tries for the team.”

The Sharks junior rep teams now have a weekend off after being scheduled a bye in round one, with their first competition games for 2015 against the Parramatta Eels at New Era Stadium on Saturday, February 28.

As for the Sharks Academy, the SG Ball Development team and Under 15’s Academy Sharks faced the Bulldogs, also on Saturday, in matches played on the new fields at Cronulla High School.

Both teams ran out two-try winners in their matches with the Bulldogs, which according to Tran were encouraging results.

“The 15’s used around 50 players, all local district juniors so while it was difficult for them in terms of their combinations they did very well, while the 17’s, which is an SG Ball Development squad, had a two try win despite a very limited preparation,” he said.

A large crowd attended the Academy matches at Cronulla High, making for an outstanding atmosphere.

The Sharks Academy teams will be in action again this weekend in games against Western Suburbs to be played at Kirkham Oval in Camden.

The 14’s Academy are scheduled to kick off at 10.00am, the 15’s at 11.00am, while the SG Ball Development squad gets underway at midday.
JUNIOR SHARKS TRIAL HIT OUT

A four tries all draw and a seven tries to three victory over the Balmain Tigers represented two solid hit outs for the Sharks junior rep sides over the weekend.

The Under-16 Matthews Cup Sharks let in a late try which locked the scores up at full time, however as Elite Development coach John Morris explained while the team still has plenty of work to do, it was still a good exercise ahead of the start of the season in three weeks time.

“They played big squad numbers so it was hard for them to get a feel for it and to get into the game but Balmain were big and physical and they were able to match them,” Morris said. “They scored a few tries with good ball movement and some players stepped up, which makes it hard for the coach when it comes to finalising his team.

“And there were no injuries, so the trial served its purpose well.”

As for the SG Ball Sharks, the under 18’s got the better of a traditionally strong Tigers outfit despite their three state squad members being missing.

Props Daniel Vasquez and Brock Illet were rested after attending an Under 18’s NSW Emerging Blues camp the day before, while Australian Schoolboy and Queensland rep Keenan Yortsen was another late withdrawal from the trial match with a minor injury concern.

“Coach Dave Howlett will want to keep a bit of a lid on it and there are certainly things they still need to work on and improve, but without three of their senior players they were pretty sharp,” Morris said. “Again there were no injuries which is always a good thing.”

The Sharks junior reps next travel to Canberra for their second trial games this weekend, before winding up their pre-season preparations with a game against Wests at Campbelltown.

Both Sharks teams then have a bye in round one of the season proper before kicking off their campaign on February 21.

THE FOOTY IS BACK
ourfooty media
The Cronulla Sharks junior reps squads had their first hit out for the 2015 season with the annual trial matches against the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

It was a good chance for coaching staff to work on their teams in the heat of battle.

Kicking of the 5:00 pm the under 16 Harold Matthews Cup trials squads took to the fields and it was pretty good quality footy from both teams which saw the young Sharkies sneak away in the 3rd of 3 x20 minute periods.

The u18 SG Ball trail squad match against the Rabbitohs licked off at 7:00 PM and looked promising using the ball well at times in the game, in a few weeks Head coach Dave Howlett will have the SG Ball squad finely tuned ready to kick off the 2015 Junior Reps Season

A good game of footy that saw the Sharks win 7 tries to 0 on The Field of Dreams at Endeaour Sports High School

The Somoa Academy side are all from Somoa and live in Auckland, New Zealand, the Cronulla team was players from NZ and the NSW Country & Queensland having a run as part of the Sharks Academy & Development program now run by retired NRL Legend John Morris

The 1st of 3 periods was pretty even with the Somoan team competing well and playing as a team.

Then in the 2nd & 3rd stanza's the young Sharks remembered what they have been learning over the past 2 days at the Sharks Academy into use and ran away with the game in the end winning 28 - 0

FLANNO PUTS ALL 4 GRADES THRU THEIR PACES
Friday last week Cronulla Sharks head coach Shane Flanagan put the entire Sharks roster through their paces in a mega combined training session.

The Harold Matthews & Sg Ball players were stoked to be training with their 1st grade hero's.

It was a hectic training night with groups of players of all ages going thru coach Shane Flanagan & staff torturous drills and practice in the Sydney summer sunshine.
