An artist interpretation of a try - |
HAROLD MATTHEWS CUP TRIAL
Story By :
The game started with both team feeling each other out in the middle of Belmore Oval.
The Bulldogs scored first with a nice long pass to the winger who scored in the left corner.
The dogs were in again a few minutes later were the doggies 5/8 used his twinkle toes weaving from about 15 meters out & beat 3 or 4 Sharks defenders to score near the posts, doggies led two tries to zip.
Cronulla hit back shortly after a kick by new comer Sam Clune to winger Rea Pittman who literally dived over the line to open the Sharks account for the day.
The rest of the first half the two teams played some flat end to end footy.
Suddenly the Sharks attacked and half back Sam Clune smashed through the Bulldogs defence and creamed the fullback to crash over the line.
Now it was 2 tries each, the n Doggies center made a good break to put the Doggies with in striking distance, then their halfback snuck over for a good try.
The Bulldogs mounted a fierce attack toward the end of the first half and spun the ball wide, the doggies winger latched on to a forward pass which he dropped and the Sharks defenders pounced on the footy only to be called off side.
A quick play the ball saw the Doggies spread the ball to their right winger who dived over for his second try.
Half time Bulldogs 4 tries - Sharks 2 tries.
The Sharks were quick off the mark at the start of the second half and crashed over for the first try of the half.
With in three minutes the Doggies crossed the Sharks line only to be called for a forward pass.
The Sharks battled their way up the ground when half back Sam Clune threw a beautiful 25 meter pass to a flying Stacey Morrell who ran on to score untouched in the right corner. 4 tries all.
The Sharks attacked again when center Steve Berkley kicked a tricky little grubber kick for Stacey Morrell to score his second try in about a minute.
Sharks hit the lead for the 1 st time in the game.
Some good paly saw the doggies forward push his way forward to score a fine team try.
The Sharks #3 went across the line next to the posts to even the scores at 5 tries each.
This must have spooked the Bulldogs players because then they started to play fair dinkum with some massive hits and showed plenty of heart.
The Sharks hit the line with only seconds to go to take home a good 7 tries to 5 win.
Best players for the Sharks were hard working forward Joel Tubbs and Center Ben Stratton.

GREAT NEWS FOR THE UNDER 14's
Story By : Yarrawarra Tigers
Ricky Stuart has always been commited to developing juniors in the Shire and has come up with a great new initiative.
Two NRL players will be assigned to each junior club to help with training and coaching.
It is anticipated that the players will be there every week on a rotating basis or at worst twice per month.
The under 14 level has been targeted by the Sharks because it is seen as the critical step from junior to senior ranks.
There is also an intention to get all coaches at this level together and run through some things as well.
This is great news guys and the kids will really benefit from it.
It is great to play a sport where the heroes are on hand and available and not living in Barcelona or Manchester. |

GRAND PLANS ... Ryan Carr wants to make the No. 9 jersey his own and help the Cowboys to a premiership. First though, the ex-Cronulla player hopes to impress at the Cowboys' trial in Rockhampton next month |
RECRUIT AIMS FOR TOP
Story & Photo By : JOSH ALSTON
A DESIRE to learn from one of his favourite players was the selling point to lure former Cronulla hooker Ryan Carr to North Queensland.
The 19-year-old has had unrivalled success, winning a premiership in the Arrive Alive Cup with Endeavour Sports High School and the best and fairest away and representative player of the year awards for Cronulla in last year's under-18 SG Ball competition.
But the lure of working with gun Cowboys hooker Aaron Payne proved to be too strong to resist as Carr packed his bags to join the North Queensland under-20s side.
"I want to just learn off Aaron Payne especially, he's equally as good as (Australian hooker) Cameron Smith," Carr said.
"It's great to learn off him at training and talk to him and ask him a lot about everything.. | Learn More | |

SHARKS VS CANBERRA RAIDERS TRIALS
What a fantastic day it turned out to be on this the 107 th Australia day, a few hundred fans, including many visitors from our Nations Capital : Canberra.
The Cronulla Sharks Junior Rep team the Harold Matthews & SG Ball squads had their first trial game of the year.
What a welcome the new Matty's Cup boyz got from the Raiders, they had some big boyz.
Not sure what the score in either game was but i think the Sharks either won or came very close.
Both the Raiders & Sharks used just about their whole squads in games that comprised of 4 quarters. The Sharks Matty's Cup coaches rotated the 2 teams made up from the squad in the first & the second half of the game.
The Matthews Cup boyz looks great in their Sharks jumpers & all looked extreemly proud as they ran onto Gymea High School's footy oval, which was in really good nick.
The second Matt's Cup team wore the Sharks away jumpers and look great along with the fantastic green of the visiting Raiders outfit.

JUNIOR REP SEASON KICKS OFF
Story By : Sharks.com.au
The Sharks under-18 SG Ball and under-16 Matthews Cup teams kick off their 2008 campaigns with trial matches against Canberra tomorrow (Saturday, January 26).
The young Sharks have been training since well before Christmas, with the first hit out of the new season being welcomed by both the players and by coach Mick Marton.
"The guys are very keen to get into it," Marton said. "We’ve done a fair bit of contact work over the last couple of weeks and the boys are jumping out of their skins.
"It’s been a long off season so they are certainly looking forward to getting out onto the field and having a game."
In his first season in charge of the Sharks SG Ball team after learning his trade coaching both senior and junior teams at the local Gymea club, Marton has inherited a squad with plenty of previous junior rep experience, with the game against the traditionally strong Canberra side set to give everybody concerned a pointer towards the Sharks chances in 2008.
Marton will also have the benefit of two experienced campaigners as his assistant coaches in former NRL players Les Davidson and Steve Hardy. Davidson enjoyed an illustrious career, playing for the Sharks, Souths, NSW and Australia, while Hardy also played more than 100 first grade games in total for the Sharks and Roosters.
Recruitment manager Craig Wilson was eagerly anticipating this weekend’s trials for both squads and earmarked a number of the youngsters as players worth watching.

"In the SG Ball, the likes of Blake Williamson, who is coming back from injury, Joel Johnson, Cameron Dunstan, Sean McDonagh and Mikahere Tepania all have experience at the junior rep level and I expect them to make an impact in the SG Ball competition this season," Wilson said.
"Then there are others taking the step up after playing in the Matthews Cup last year like Stuart Mills, Hayden Peacock, Chad Townsend and Callum Tatahua, all local juniors and contracted players here at the Sharks who we are also eager to see perform at the higher level."
"In the Matthews Cup there has been a number of players who have trained well in the pre-season, players such as James Hasson, Daniel Moroko, Steve Lemone and Aaron Bruce, just to name a few, young guys who we are keeping our eye on for the future."
The Sharks Matthews Cup side, will be coached by Dave Howlett and Kevin Farquhar.
The trial matches are being held at the fields at Gymea Technological High School, with the kick off time for the Matthews Cup at 4.00pm, followed by SG Ball at 5.30pm. |

MATTHEWS CUP BOYS GETTING READY FOR TRIALS
Story & Photo's By :
There seems to be a different attitude in the players of the Cronulla Harold Matthews Cup squad. They seem more serious in their training from before Christmas.
The Squad also look like they are gelling well and it is obvious they have formed a strong bond and are all becoming mates.
Coach Dave Howlett put the boys through their paces at training last night, the boys trained at Endeavour field no 2. The Endeavour number 1 field is looking very nice, there are some nic green patches on the ground so hopefullly Cronulla Caringbah can continue the tradition of hosting excellent games of junior footy.
