Story By : Rob Willis Sharks Media Manager Photo's By : Steve Montgomery /  On a day showcasing the young talent playing in the local Cronulla-Sutherland Junior League, Sharks Winter Development and Academy teams took on the Bulldogs in a series of trial matches on Wednesday. Played at the Sharks Academy Fields at Cronulla High School, matches were played in under 13’s, 14’s, 15’s and 17’s. The early matches managed to escape the heavy rain showers, however the 15’s and 17’s games in particular were played in wet and slippery conditions. The Sharks 13’s tried valiantly in their match but were outgunned by a physically bigger Bulldogs squad, while the 14’s turned the tables, playing some enterprising football in scoring six tries to two. In a strong pointer towards the 2018 Matthews Cup season the under 15’s performed strongly, then in the worst of the weather the under 17’s slogged it out on a field which was extremely sloppy by the time the full-time siren sounded. In all it was an excellent exercise for both clubs in providing pathway opportunities to young players from the two districts. The Sharks Winter Development and Academy will now continue with their weekly training sessions as the local junior league moves towards semi-finals. Cronulla Sharks’ Indigenous player, Akira Kelly, has been named Player of the Year following the first ever Tarsha Gale Cup season. A key player in the Sharks’ fierce Under 18’s women’s side, Kelly scored 11 tries and booted an impressive 10 conversions, with the zippy five-eighth tallying a whopping 64 points for Cronulla this year, making her one of the competition’s top point-scorers. Kelly said she was equally excited and surprised when she found out that she had won the historic award. “I’d just come home from school when I found out. I’d expected the award to go to one of the girls playing in the Grand Final, from the Panthers or Bulldogs,” Kelly admitted. “I felt and still feel so honoured that they thought of me.” Kelly was presented with the award by Ms. Tarsha Gale, captain of the Australian Jillaroos throughout the 1990s and the very woman after which the Women’s Under 18’s competition was named. “I got to shake her [Ms. Tarsha Gale’s] hand. It was such a privilege to get out there to see and meet her,” she said. Hailing from a Rugby League family, Kelly kicked off her love for Rugby League at a young age. She said that she was thankful for the opportunity to take her passion for the game to new heights with the Sharks’ Tarsha Gale Cup side. “It was a great experience to play at that level. The intensity is higher than club footy – you really have to live your game, chat and defence. “I was luck to play with a great bunch of girls. We really looked out for each other on and off the field… we’re like sisters now,” Kelly said. “I’m so proud that our team made it so far and that we fought back when we were down in the Preliminary Finals.” The 16-year-old is looking forward to donning the Black, White and Blue with next year’s Tarsha Gale Cup side and hopes to see more young girls at trials. “I’d definitely encourage more girls to play Rugby League. It’s a good sport and a great way to make friends.” In a successful first season the Sharks progressed to the third week of the Tarsha Gale Cup finals, only to bow out to the Bulldogs in a closely fought Grand Final qualifier. |

Story By : Rob Willis Sharks Media Manager The Sharks have failed to overcome a slow start in going down by 30-22 to the Parramatta Eels in the SG Ball Grand Final. Always chasing their opponents after giving up a two try lead early in the match, the Sharks mounted a brave second half comeback only to come up short in a match where crucial decisions and the bounce of the ball went against them. Errors at vital stages, two disallowed tries late in the match and a controversial Parramatta penalty try were ultimately the difference between the two sides. The game began disastrously for the Sharks with the Eels scoring on the back of an error in the opening three minutes of the match. The try was converted from wide out and the Parramatta side extended that advantage just three minutes later with the same player in Ethan Parry, albeit from a different attacking play, crossing for his second. Again the conversion was successful and the Eels were well on top at 12-0 seven minutes into the contest. The Sharks however showed plenty of character and composure in the remainder of the first period and were rewarded for their effort, lock Monty Raper crashing over from close range to narrow the gap. Luke Metcalf added the extras and it was 12-6 the Eels, a score which would stay the same up until the half time break. Unfortunately the second half began in a similar fashion to the first, a Sharks error gifting the Eels field position and from there they took advantage, five eighth Joseph Taipari displaying good footwork to slice through and score under the posts. The conversion as on target and it was 18-6 Eels four minutes into the second period. A penalty pushed the lead out to 20-6, before the moment and decision that probably put the result out of the Sharks reach, when a penalty try was awarded after an Eels kick chaser was brought down in the in-goal area. With the simple kick at goal it was 26-6 Eels with 23 minutes of the match remaining. A try to Ronaldo Mulitalo when he burrowed over from dummy half made it 24-10 and when Jaemon Salmon scored shortly after following a Mulitalo line break, the Sharks had reason for some optimism at 26-16 with 12 minutes left. That hope then went up another notch when Teig Wilton burst through the Parramatta defensive line and outpaced the chasers on a 50-metre run to the line and it was game on with still eight minutes on the clock. Ultimately however it would be another Sharks handling error, on the first set of six following the kick off, which proved to be their downfall, Parry scoring a third for the Eels to push their lead back out to eight points at 30-22 with time running out. A 50-50 decision for a forward pass when the Sharks had appeared to score under the posts, then another disallowed try when Salmon was ruled to have dropped the ball over the line, saw the Eels escape and the young Cronulla side leave Leichhardt Oval disappointed. For the Sharks Raper and James Roumanos were outstanding in the middle, Wilton dangerous on the edge and centres Bronson Xerri and Mulitalo busy out wide. Following an emphatic second half display in their preliminary final match against Illawarra last weekend the Sharks now face the Parramatta Eels in the SG Ball Grand Final. In a game matching the two most dominant teams in the 2017 SG Ball competition, the Sharks will be looking to capture their second under-18’s title in two years after claiming victory back in 2015. The Sharks finished as minor premiers after the regular season, the Eels in second, with the two teams losing just once during the nine-round competition. Since that time the Sharks and Eels have continued on their winning ways, the Sharks beating the Panthers, then Steelers last weekend, to progress to the Grand Final, the Eels crushing the Bulldogs 52-12 in week one of the finals before seeing off the challenge of the Roosters by 32-12 in their preliminary final victory. The two teams haven’t met so far in 2017, setting up an intriguing clash at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday. As good a side as the Eels might be, the Sharks have every right to go into the contest confident of success, even more so following a second half last week which produced six tries and 32 points. Down by 14-6 early in the second period the Sharks ran rampant in the final 30-minutes, the left-hand side of their attack particularly potent against a Steelers outfit which had no answer. The Sharks team possesses an abundance of talented young players, although their success this season has been built on all 17 contributing in each game. However as good as this Sharks team might be, standing in their way will be Parramatta, the club which has been the most successful in the 52-year history of the SG Ball competition, winning the premiership 11 times. Sharks coach Dave Howlett has named a team with just one change, that being the return of Fine Kula after the Sharks prop missed the Illawarra match through injury. With a whole squad in good form, Howlett will need to make some tough decisions as to the make-up of his final 17, with 20 players named as of Tuesday’s team announcement. The Sharks v Eels SG Ball Grand Final is scheduled to get underway at 2.00pm at Leichhardt Oval. The Tarsha Gale Sharks progressed to a Grand Final qualifier courtesy of a win over the Raiders, while the Matthews Cup Sharks bowed out following a disappointing loss in Junior rep semi-final action on Saturday. The Tarsha Gale girls started well in establishing a big lead over the Raiders and went on with the job with a 30-12 win, while in the under-16 Matthews Cup it was a contrasting story, with the boys squandering a first half lead in going down by 30-22 to the young Canberra side. In the Tarsha Gale the Sharks faced a much stiffer opposition to the Raiders team they thrashed 56-14 in their previous encounter but with Quincy Dodd showing the way with three tries still proved too good. The Tarsha Gale Cup Sharks now move on to a Grand Final qualifying match against the Canterbury Bulldogs who claimed the minor premiership after finishing on top of the table after the nine rounds of the regular season. In the Matthews Cup is was a sad ending for the Sharks after a season which had promised so much. The Sharks jumped out to a handy first half lead only for lapses in concentration and intensity to prove costly in the second period of the match, with an enthusiastic Raiders team coming home over the top and winning through to a finals clash with the Newcastle Knights next weekend. The Matthews Cup Sharks won seven of eight regular season games only to lose consecutive matches to Parramatta and Canberra in bowing out of the premiership race. The Tarsha Gale girls now join the SG Ball Sharks in playing for a place in the respective Grand Finals, with the under 18 boys to play the Illawarra Steelers. Story By : Rob Willis Sharks Media Manager Photo's By : Steve Montgomery / It was a day of mixed fortunes for the young Sharks junior rep teams with only the SG Ball side emerging victorious in week one finals action yesterday. The SG Ball Sharks moved within one game of a Grand Final appearance with a strong win over the Panthers, however the results weren’t as positive for the other junior Sharks teams, with the Matthews Cup side beaten 30-10 by the Eels and the Tarsha Gale Cup girls going down by 26-20. But it was a positive result for the under-18 Sharks who managed to reverse a loss to Penrith suffered just a few weeks ago, with their 28-20 win stamping them as a realistic challenger for the SG Ball title. Due to finishing inside the top four after the none round regular season, both the Matthews Cup and Tarsha Gale teams live to fight another day, with both to play elimination finals next weekend. In the SG Ball despite giving up a first half lead to their opponents they proved too good in the second period, with both sides scoring five tries with Luke Metcalf’s goal kicking proving the difference. Melcalf kicked four goals as well as scoring a 90-metre try in the Sharks win. The Sharks will now take a well-earned break next week before playing for a place in the Grand Final the following weekend. The news wasn’t as bright for the Matthews Cup Sharks, with the Eels just a little too strong on the day in recording the 20-point win. The Sharks battled hard despite losing prop Isaac Massima to what appears to be a serious knee injury and now face an elimination final next weekend. As for the Tarsha Gale girls, they were were on track for a victory and a place in the Grand Final qualifying match only to have the Steelers fight back and take control on the later stages of the contest. Three tries from Steeler Lily-Rose Bennett off-set the two four pointers scored by the Sharks Akira Kelly with the Cronulla girls now needing to win a sudden death game next week to progress. Story By : Ryan Selvage NSWRL MEDIA (Twitter: @RyanSelvage) Edging their way to a hard-fought 26-20 qualifying final win over their Shire rivals, the Illawarra Steelers booked their passage through to the third week of the Tarsha Gale Cup Finals Series, downing the Sharks at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday. Getting off to a slow start, the Steelers women trailed by 16 heading into the second half before reversing their fortunes – earning the praise of the competition’s namesake in the process. As the Steelers celebrated their first-week win in the centre of Leichhardt Oval, they were joined by Tarsha Gale herself, who offered up her congratulations and praise for the young Illawarra stars. “What these girls are doing for the game, and for Women’s Rugby League, it’s outstanding,” Gale told NSWRL.com.au “The skill and talent that was on show, it’s truly inspirational. Not only that, they hit hard, they play hard. I could hear some of the hits back up in the grandstand.” Playing with an at-times brutal intensity, so too were the Steelers fleet-of-foot – arguably none more so than flyer Lilly-Rose Bennett. Crossing for a decisive hat-trick in the win over the Sharks, Bennett took her season tally to 14 tries, drawing level with the Bulldogs’ Page McGregor at the head of the competition. “We knew we were going to come out and that it was going to be a hard game, but I think our girls handled it well, we worked really hard,” Bennett told NSWRL.com.au. “A few of those tries, they were pretty hard. It’s my job to look for the gaps, and to hit them. “If we go out as hard as we do always, and the effort into our preparation at training, there’s no reason why we can’t go all the way in this competition.” The Steelers now just sit one win away from the inaugural Tarsha Gale Cup Grand Final, so too do the Bulldogs, who beat the Eels 32-16 in their qualifying final at Belmore. |

Story By : Rob Willis Sharks Media Manager In what represents an outstanding achievement for their junior representative and Tarsha Gale Cup programs the Sharks have qualified in the top two for the finals in each of the respective competitions. The SG Ball Sharks led the way, a win over the Western Sydney Academy of Sport (WSAS) yesterday seeing them finish as minor premiers, with the Matthews Cup and Tarsha Gale both winding up in second position following the conclusion of the regular season. The three Sharks teams now head into preliminary finals where victory would see them move to within one game of a Grand Final appearance while as a result of finishing in the top four, should they be unsuccessful in week one they would live to fight another day. For the SG Ball Sharks they locked up the top seed for the finals with a 32-16 win over WSAS. Five eighth Jaemon Salmon crossed for three tries for the Sharks and while coach Dave Howlett would have been satisfied with the win, the fact that WSAS scored the final two tries late in the contest to narrow the final margin would have been something of a disappointment. The under 18 Sharks finished with one loss and seven wins from their eight matches and now play the only team to have beaten them this season, the Penrith Panthers, in week one of the finals. In the Matthews Cup the Sharks closed out their season with an equally comfortable win over WSAS, scoring six tries to one in a 36-4 victory. Centre Douglas Levi crossed twice for a Sharks team who like their SG Ball counterparts dropped just one game during the home and away season. After finishing second the Sharks play the third placed Parramatta Eels, ironically like the SG Ball Sharks their opponents will be the only team to beat them this year. In the Tarsha Gale match which opened the day at the St Mary’s Stadium, the Sharks had plenty to play for against a Panthers side pushing for a top four berth. In the end it was the Sharks who snuck home in a closely fought contest, emerging 24-22 winning to lock down second position behind minor premiers the Canterbury Bulldogs. Five eighth and captain Tayla Preston scored two tries, as did Akira Kelly in following on from a hat trick of four pointers the previous week. | JUNIOR REPS ROUND 9 – PREVIEW Story By : Rob Willis Sharks Media Manager Photo's By : Steve Montgomery / The final regular season round of the Junior Reps and Tarsha Gale Cup competitions sees the Sharks travel to St Mary’s to take on the Western Sydney Academy of Sport in the Matthews and Ball and the Penrith Panthers in the Tarsha Gale Cup. All matches will have a bearing on the finals, with the three young Sharks teams looking to end their year and enter the playoffs on a high note. The action begins at 9.30am with the Tarsha Gale match, the Matthews Cup gets underway at 10.30am, followed by the SG Ball at midday. See below brief match previews, team lists and links to the highlights from round 8. SG BALL The Ball Sharks were never able to get into top gear in a 24-18 loss to the Panthers, however this week’s match against WSAS gives them an opportunity to work through a few of their issues ahead of the important finals games to follow. Coach Dave Howlett has named the same team which took on the Panthers and he will be looking for the likes of halves Luke Metcalf and Jaemon Salmon to lift after the last start defeat and to lead the way this weekend. Metcalf is the SG Ball’s leading scorer with 98 points this season, while he was included this week alongside Salmon, prop James Roumanos and centre Bronson Xerri in a Junior Blues Under 18’s NSW Pathways squad this week. The Sharks are level with three other teams on 12 competition points on the SG Ball points table, with a win on Saturday, due to their superior for-and-against, set to see them finish in the number one spot heading into the finals. MATTHEWS CUP The Sharks were a little bit off their best in the first period as they trailed the Penrith side, however in keeping their opponents scoreless, while scoring five tries of their own in the second half, sent a message to the other Matthews Cup contenders. Tied in first but sitting second on for-and-against, the Sharks can secure a top-two finish with a win over WSAS who have been successful in just one game this season. Their likely opponents in week one of the finals would be the Eels, the only team to beat the Sharks this year, with the young Cronulla team keen for another crack at the Parramatta side. TARSHA GALE The Sharks knocked over the previous leaders the Eels last week and will be intent on doing the same to the third-placed Panthers this weekend. While Illawarra is lurking two points outside the top four, the Sharks superior for-and-against should see them qualify for the finals regardless of the result on Saturday. No doubt however the girls would love to go into the playoff with wins against two of their biggest rivals under their belts. It was a mixed day for the Sharks Junior Rep sides yesterday with the Matthews Cup and Tarsha Gale side scoring strong wins while the previously undefeated SG Ball side slipped to their first loss of the 2017 season. In the Tarsha Gale match to kick off the mornings matches the Sharks girls scored a confidence-boosting 30-20 victory over the competition leading Eels in what was a clash of the top two teams in the Women’s under 18’s competition. On the back of two losses it was a welcome return to form for the Sharks girls, who now return to the top of the table with just one game remaining in the regular season. Akira Kelly had a big day for the Sharks, scoring three tries and kicking three goals. Next up were the under 16 Matthews Cup boys and while heavily favoured the Sharks didn’t have it all there own way in the first half of the match. The young Sharks found their groove however in the second period, running away with the match in registering a comfortable 38-12 triumph. The win was an important one for the Sharks who are pushing for a top four finish and against a traditionally tough Panthers side the victory was a welcome one. Eliah Veikoso crossed for two tries, one a long-range individual effort, back rower Rhys Daikin was strong in the forwards while young lock Billy Burke pleased coach Glenn Brailey with his effort. The Sharks can consolidate a top four berth and two chances in the Matthews Cup finals with a win in their last round game next week. After two wins the final game of the day didn’t go exactly to plan, with the previously undefeated Sharks going down by 24-18 to Penrith in a keenly contested match. Coming off a 78-0 romp the previous week the Sharks couldn’t quite lift to the level of their well-credentialed opponents however the narrow loss should have them primed for a finals assault in the coming weeks. The Matthews Cup and SG Ball Sharks both play the Western Sydney Academy next weekend, with the Tarsha Gale Cup side taking on Penrith, with all matches to be played at St Mary’s Stadium. |

Story By : Rob Willis Sharks Media Manager Photo's By : steve montgomery / The Matthews Cup and SG Ball Sharks kept their undefeated records intact with strong wins over a quality opponent in the Manly Sea Eagles in round six matches played yesterday. The under-16 Matts Cup Sharks were made to work for their win, a late try sealing an 18-10 victory, while in a battle between first and third the Sharks SG Ball side proved far too good in running away with a40-10 triumph. Unfortunately the story wasn’t quite as positive for the Tarsha Gale Sharks women’s 18’s squad who slipped to a second consecutive loss in going down by 34-10 to the Bulldogs. The good news for the Tarsha Gale girls is the fact that they remain near the top of the table and look assured of a finals berth. But in the rain and grey skies it was the boys who were shining at the Academy Fields at Cronulla High, with two quick tries putting the Matthews Cup Sharks 12-0 in front, a score they would take to the half time break and leaving Manly with it all to do in the second stanza. To their credit the Sea Eagles fought back to 12-10 Sharks before a Kitione Kautoga try inside the final five minutes confirmed the result. In the SG Ball clash to follow the Sharks handled the slippery conditions much better from the outset and it was Tieg Wilton who would break the deadlock the back rower showing clever footwork and good strength close to the line. Luke Metcalf added the extra two to make it 6-0, Manly responded with a try of their own, but it would be the Sharks half back to break the game open, two tries to Metcalf, the first a long range effort after scooping up a loose ball, extended the lead to 18-4 and the home team was well on top. The Sharks would keep the pressure on, taking a 30-10 lead to the break and the game was as good as gone for Manly, the Cronulla boys taking the points and confirming their position on top of the competition table as the only unbeaten side in the SG Ball so far this year. Metcalf added a second half try and his three four pointers and six goals saw him notch a personal tally of 24 points. Playing the final game of the afternoon the Tarsha Gale girls found the Bulldogs to be difficult opponent and after falling behind 10-0 early were never able to recover. Georgia Healey and Sophie Buller were the try scorers as the Sharks girls saw their record slip to three wins and two losses from the five games played. The young Sharks men’s teams are at home again next weekend when they play the Parramatta Eels (Matthews Cup) and West Coast Pirates (SG Ball), while the Tarsha Gale Sharks travel to Canberra to take on the Raiders.

The Sharks Tarsha Gale Cup, Matthews Cup and SG Ball teams all made it three wins from as many starts with victories at Campbelltown Stadium today. The Tarsha Gale girls got the ball rolling with a convincing 46-4 triumph, the under 16 Matts Cup boys continued the momentum with a big 60-6 victory, before the SG Ball Sharks made a bold statement as to their prospects in 2017 with a 48-10 win over the previously unbeaten Wests Magpies. All three Sharks teams sit atop their respective competitions with six points from their three matches played so far. In the Tarsha Gale clash it took the under-18 Sharks women a little bit of time to warm to their task but once they did the match turned into a one way procession, 10 tries in the match emphasizing their dominance. Kersal Johnson, Olivia Quinn and Tayla Preston all crossed for two tries in the win over the Wests Tigers. In the Matts Cup game that followed it was the Sharks first on the board with a second minute try to Jared Domazetovski before the Wests Magpies matched that four pointer shortly after. From there it was one-way traffic, the young Sharks running rampant with an 11 try, eight goal rout. Half back Thomas Demeio notched a personal tally of 24 points with two tries and eight goals. In the SG Ball match to finish the day it was a similar story for the Sharks who asserted an early advantage with a first minute try to Bronson Xerri and never looked back from that moment on. In the final wash-up the Sharks would run in 10 tries to two from the Magpies, three of those four-pointers to Xerri and had Luke Metcalf brought his kicking boots the fulltime score-line might have matched the Matthews Cup result from earlier. The three Sharks teams will look to continue their winning ways when they host the Illawarra Steelers in round five matches at Southern Cross Group Stadium next Saturday.

In showing their big first up win was no fluke the Sharks Tarsha Gale team have scored a comprehensive 46-4 victory over South'sin their round three match at Southern Cross Group Stadium on Saturday. After registering a 38-0 win over the Sydney Indigenous team the week prior, the young Sharks girls picked up where they left off, scoring on their first possession against the Rabbitohs and going on with the job from that point on. In all the Under-18 Sharks women scored nine tries, including five in the first 10 minutes of the match, with three players in Elly Hazelton, Georgia Healey and Tayla Preston crossing for doubles. Preston and Quincey Dodd were amongst the Sharks best on the day, however it was another complete team performance from the Cronulla squad. While the Sharks have kept the scoreboard operators extremely busy with some enterprising attacking play in their wins so far, it may be their defence which has impressed the most as in two games they have conceded just one try. The next assignment for the Tarsha Gale Sharks is a match against the WestsTigers at Campbelltown on Saturday. Kick off to that game is scheduled for 11am. The Matthews Cup and SG Ball Sharks both made it two from two to start the 2017 season with victories over Souths last Saturday. Following on from wins over the Roosters in round two after the first weekend of matches was cancelled due to extreme heat conditions, the two young Sharks squads were both made to work by the Rabbitohs before grinding out important victories. In the Under-16 Matthews Cup the final score line appeared comfortable however the Sharks had to battle hard to defeat Souths 22-6 in their clash at Southern Cross Group Stadium. Prop Isaac Masima crossed for two tries in the Sharks win. In the SG Ball a last minute try from backrower Teig Wilton saw the Sharks escape with a 30-24 victory over a determined Souths side in their round three match. Despite the Sharks seemingly in control, a couple of defensive lapses late enabled the Rabbitohs to fight their way back into the contest, with a converted try less than five minutes from fulltime locking the scores up at 24-all with a draw appearing inevitable. The Sharks however held their nerve, worked into field position and carrying a couple of defenders over the line Wilton managed to plant the ball down 15 metres to left of the uprights for the match-winning four-pointer. Both Sharks sides now sit undefeated after round three, with matches scheduled against Western Suburbs and Campbelltown Stadium next Saturday. The Cronulla Sharks' 3 Junior Rep sides battled it out with the South Sydney Rabbitoh's at Shark Park on a rainy Saturday arvo. All three grades scored convincing wins with the SG Ball lads making sure coach Dave Howletts' heart was working waiting until 30 seconds before the bell to score a fantastic 30 - 24 victory. The Sharkies girls had a comfortable win in the Tarsha Gale Cup dominating play to win and the Harold Matthews Cup boiz fought very hard in miserable conditions to out last the Rabbits. FAST START: Preston, the Sharks captain, took just 29 seconds to notch up the first-ever try in the Tarsha Gale Cup. In years to come, when Rugby League fans reflect on the rapid rise of the women’s game, one young woman from Cronulla will forever hold a very special piece of history: this morning, Tayla Preston scored the first-ever try in the inaugural Tarsha Gale Cup. Preston, who Captains the Cronulla Sharks in the under-18s Women’s Junior Representative Competition, took exactly 29 seconds to achieve the feat, scoring in the opening set of the Sharks’ clash with Sydney Indigenous Academy. Taking the ball at first receiver on the halfway line, the five-eighth scooted around the opposing defence to run 50 metres untouched. While the significance of the achievement might not have sunk in yet, it helped calm some early nerves as the team ran out convincing 38-0 winners. "It was great fun; everyone was a bit nervous to start off with but once we got out there we knew what we had to do," Preston tells NSWRL.com.au. "It gives me a lot of confidence for the season ahead – yeah, it was great to get a try in." Like so many Tarsha Gale Cup players, Preston is still relatively new to the game, having picked up a Steeden for the first time in 2016 with the Cronulla-Caringbah Sharks under-18s side. Alongside the Cronulla-Caringbah opens women’s team, which took out a thrilling SMWRL Grand Final, the under-18s tasted the ultimate success. "It was the first-ever woman’s under-18s team in the Shire and it was a great thing to be a part of," Preston says. "We ended up taking out the premiership for that one, then when the Tarsha Gale arose we were all really keen to give it a go." Sporting blonde braids and the Sharks’ number six jersey, Preston bore striking resemblance to NSW and Jillaroos star Allana Ferguson throughout her impressive individual performance – a similarity which, perhaps, is no coincidence. "It’s really good, because Allana teaches at my school," Preston explains. "She’ll come help me with some tips or whatever if I need and it’s just really good to look up to her." In recent times, Cronulla have led the way in growing the women’s game; since an historic women’s clash with the St George Illawarra Dragons last year, the club have signed representative stars Ferguson, Ruan Sims, Maddie Studdon and Corbin McGregor. With the presence of such talent around the club, it comes as little surprise that the Sharks are one of the early favourites for the Tarsha Gale Cup. "It’s great inspiration for all of us, because we look at how they’ve got to where they are," Preston says. "We look up to them and we just strive to be the best, like them. "I’m just looking forward for women’s Rugby League to improve and expand in the future." Said expansion of the women’s game is now inevitable – and it appears that the first Tarsha Gale Cup try scorer could be a big part of that. |

 JUNIOR REPS ROUND 1 GAMES CANCELLED Story By : NSWRL Media The NSWRL has cancelled all junior representative matches this weekend in accordance with the NRL Heat Guidelines following the most recent updated forecasts of extreme heat. The 2017 competition season was set to kick-off tomorrow (Saturday, 11 February), with an inaugural girls competition being played alongside the elite junior boys this year for the first time. The Harold Matthews (U16 boys), SG Ball (U18 boys) and the Tarsha Gale Cup (U18 girls) were to be played at various venues around Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle tomorrow and Sunday, but in the interests of player welfare and proper administration of the competitions, all matches have been cancelled. The Cronulla Sharks Junior Reps had their final trial before next weekends Official Rnd 1 Kickoff of the 2017 NSWRL Junior Rep Season. The Sharks U16 Harold Matthews Cup & U18 SG Ball Cup teams traveled to the famous Belmore Sports Stadium and were greeted by the U18 Girls playing their last trial against the Doggies too in the Tarsh Gale Cup trial.. In an interesting encounter watching the girls play 4 x 9 min quarters. Both teams show some good skills and scored a few tries each, it was the keenness to play in most of the girls that was the stand out feature.
