SHARKS SG BALL ON FIRE Story & Photo By :
THe Cronulla Sharks returned to the winners circle this week after last weeks disappointing loss to the old enemy the St. George Dragons.
This weeks round 6 game against the North Sydney Bears the Sharks got to spread the ball and play some good footy.
The Bears didnt have much to stop the onslaught when the dave Howlett coached Sharks wacked up 52 points, to the Bears credit they took their limited opportunities and but on 10 points of their own to make the score semi reasonable.
This week the Sharks Junior reps face the might of the Penrith Panthers at home again |

Story & Photo By :
St. Helens footy club Academy have won all 3 games so far on their Tour Down Under beating the Cronulla Sharks Academy u17s in very good game of rugby league in stinking hot conditions on Sunday afternoon at Forshaw Park, Sylvania Waters.
Its now up to the Penrith Panthers next Saturday to restore some Aussie pride against this very well coached side :-) |
SHARKS 17’S TO TACKLE ST HELENS
Story By : SHARKS MEDIA
The Sharks under 17’s Academy squad will take on the powerful touring St Helens Academy team in a match to be played this Sunday.
The young Sharks, most of who will go on to represent the club in the SG Ball competition in 2012, will face a formidable challenge against a St Helens team which boasts five England Academy Squad players.
The St Helens Academy, which makes regular visits to Australian shores as a part of their development program, has already played and soundly beaten the Wests Juniors so far on their 2011 tour and were scheduled to play the Central Coast prior to the Sharks match on Sunday.
St Helens in fact have an outstanding record from previous tours, having lost just one match on their previous three visits, that loss coincidently coming at the hands of the Sharks back in 2009.
In a testimony to the strength of their academy program, in one match during the UK Super League season in September, 15 of the 17 players in the St Helens first grade side came through the St Helens academy, with a 16th player having joined the club as an 18-year-old.
The Sharks however will present them with strong opposition, with the Cronulla club having high hopes for a number of the local players within the age group.
The match is scheduled for a 3.00pm kickoff on Sunday, October 23, at Forshaw Park at Sylvania Waters (Southern Districts Rugby), with a $5 adult entry fee to be charged. A canteen and bar will operate on the day.

SHARKS ACADEMY TEAMS IMPROVE AGAINST SOUTHS Story & Photo's By :
Once again the local Cronulla juniors have put on a great display of junior rugby league on Wednesday when the visiting South Sydney Rabbitoh's turned up for the annual development clash at Shark Park.
SHARKS ACADEMY SUCCESSFUL AGAINST SOUTHS
Story By : Rob WILLIS - Cronulla SHARKS
The Sharks scored three wins in their four matches against Souths in matches played in under 13’s, 14’s, 15’s and 17’s at Toyota Stadium.
In starting the day in a successful fashion the under-13 Sharks outclassed the Junior Bunnies in winning by 32-12. The young Sharks started strongly with two tries almost before Souths had touched the ball and went on with the job in the remainder of the match in what was an impressive display.
For the Sharks Dylan Xerri, who also crossed for two tries, was awarded best back, while Dean Tatsis picked up the best forward award. Others to excel for the Sharks were front rower James Weyland and halfback Kyle Flanagan.
In the 14’s it was a case of two halves, with the Sharks crossing for two first stanza tries to lead 8-0, before the match turned around in the second 25 minute period as the Junior Bunnies took control, running in six tries to win 24-12.
Jake Piggott was solid at fullback for the Sharks, claiming the best back accolade, while Jordan Collins got through a mountain of defense to earn best forward.
In the 15’s it was a consistent effort from the Sharks which saw them take out their clash with Souths by a 20-8 scoreline.
Ahead 16-0 at the break the Sharks faced a more committed Souths team in the second half but were good enough to hold on and claim a solid win.
Hooker Jayden Brailey was outstanding for the Sharks, getting through a power of work and winning best forward for his efforts, while fullback Scott Allen was deservedly named best back. Special mention should also be made of Josh Kedwell who performed strongly in the centres his first game in Sharks colours, with Cameron Burgess playing with plenty of aggression in the forwards.
In the 17’s Souths faced a red-hot Sharks side and could do little to stop a first half onslaught which saw them race away to a 28-0 lead. Souths battled back somewhat in the second half but left themselves with too much work to do as the Sharks ran out winners by 36-8.
Sam Rauicava at fullback and Jordan Bowles at lock were amongst the Sharks best.
The Sharks Academy operates under the guidance of Alan Wilson, while David Byrnes, Glenn Brailey, Joel Allen and Darren Quince were coaches of the respective age groups on the day.

NYC SHARKS INTO TOP FOUR
Story BY : Scott Brooks, Sportal
Photo's :
The Cronulla Sharks have moved into the NYC top-four courtesy of a hard-fought 28-16 victory over the Gold Coast Titans at Skilled Park on Saturday.
Following their squandering of a 20-0 lead after 26 minutes last week against the Bulldogs, it was imperative the Sharks held their nerve after skipping out to a 10-0 advantage during the first half of this match.
The lowly Titans certainly did their best to emulate the Dogs of last week, posting a try five minutes before the break and the first two after the resumption to assume a shock 16-10 lead midway through the second stanza.
But the young Sharks were determined not to let another one slip, with winger Luke Pickerd, prop Teni Waipouri and man-of-the-match Dane Malone all scoring in the final 15 minutes to give the visitors a comfortable victory in the final analysis.
It was a pretty even affair in the early exchanges, but a clever inside pass by half-back Penani Manumalealii saw Malone crash over for the first of his two tries to open the scoring for the Sharks in the 16th minute.
Five-eighth Jake Walsh slotted the simple conversion to give Cronulla a 6-0 lead.
A few minutes later the Titans were desperately unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty try.
A bomb was allowed to bounce by Sharks full-back Nesiasi Mataitonga, giving Titans winger Mitch Ardler a seemingly clear shot a diving on the ball for a try, but he was dragged down from behind by opposite Pickerd, resulting only in a penalty against Cronulla.
The Sharks took advantage of their good fortune when lock Tyrone Peachey used a clever left-foot step on his way to a fine 20m solo try in the 23rd minute – his 10th four-pointer of the season.
Walsh's conversion attempt was pushed across the face, leaving the Sharks 10-0 up.
Cronulla suffered a massive blow on the half-hour when gun second-rower Tyson Frizell was forced from the field after suffering a shoulder injury in a thumping, but legal tackle by opposite number Jackson Springer.
Five minutes before the break the Titans posted their first points via an 80-metre try by winger Shaun Carney against the run of play.
They went into break 10-6 down before a huge bust down the left edge by winger Lausi'i Taliauli resulted in five-eighth Matthew Beddow sneaking over for a soft try in the 53rd minute to give the Titans a 12-10 lead following Carney's simple conversion.
Beddow was proving a handful for the Sharks' defence and he was over again in the 58th minute to open up a six-point lead for his team.
But Pickerd was not about to see his side let another game slip by, running a great line off a Manumalealii pass to score a 65th minute try to level the scores at 16-16.
The Sharks were well and truly back in business in the 70th minute when huge prop Teni Waipouri used his significant bulk to power over beside the posts and hand his side a six-point lead following Walsh's easy conversion.
Malone sealed the deal for the Sharks with a sneaky try under the sticks with five minutes to go.
The NYC Sharks have a perfect opportunity to seal their first ever Toyota Cup finals appearance over the next month, with three of their next four games at Toyota Stadium.

JUNIOR SHARKS SHINE AGAINST BULLDOGS
Story By : Rob WILLIS Photo's By :
In what was the culmination of the Sharks Summer Academy, teams in the 14’s, 15’s and 17’s faced off against the Canterbury Bulldogs with players showing the benefit of the intensive training program and at the same time giving an indication of their outstanding potential for the future.
The under-14’s, despite being considerably outsized by their opponents, used skill and commitment in scoring three tries to two against the Bulldogs in what was an extremely impressive performance.
At the conclusion of the match 14’s Academy coach Glenn Brailey singled out Jye Challenor and Jackson Garrett for special praise, however he also expressed his satisfaction with the display given by his entire playing group.
In the 15’s the result was reversed, with the Bulldogs crossing for three tries to the Sharks two, however after conceding the first three tries, fighting back with two four pointers of their own was an indication of the character of the Sharks side.
Marcus Pappas put in a man of the match performance for the Sharks, with his solid defence and strong charges with the football particularly pleasing to coach Chris Deiner. Ryan Cummins was busy in the backs, while Jayden Brailey tackled himself to a standstill at hooker.
While the first two games may have been dominated by defence, the 17’s Sharks let the ball do the work and reaped the benefits of their entertaining play in running in seven tries to two against the more highly fancied Canterbury side.
Instructed by coach Craig Holmes to use an obvious speed advantage, Taylar Garrett, playing centre and five eighth, and Jason Gray out on the wing, were amongst the Sharks to cause havoc with the Bulldogs defence, with the pair crossing for five of the Sharks seven tries.
In the forwards the likes of Brandon Sweeney, Brock Cope, Kurt Dillon and Daniel Byrne more than matched their opposites, while Kurt Drysdale was enterprising from dummy half.
The Sharks Summer Academy concluded with the Bulldogs games after 12 weeks of training both before and after the Christmas period.
All players and coaches were selected from local area clubs, with the Academy program to progress to Sharks Academy Talent Squads (SATS) for the winter period.
Players will be selected for those respective squads in the coming weeks.

SHARKS TRAVEL TO BROOKIE TO ANNUAL SEAEAGLE CULL
Story & Photo's By :
The Cronulla Sharks junior reps travel to emeny territory this Saturday to take on Manly.
The SG Ball are on fire after last weeks flogging of the Illawarra Steelers at Shark Park winning 32 - 12. The Sharks SG Ball are one of the better sides in this comp again this year and should bring home the 2 points from Brookie.
The Matthew's Cup side struggled last week against a talented Steelers outfit going down 12 - 42. The junior Sharks play real good footy for the 1st and last 10 minutes of each game and if they can just put 70 minutes of footy together, are not far from a few wins.
Next Saturday the 26 at Shark Park we see all the Cronulla juniors play with 5 games of footy starting with the Under 14 Sharks Academy team taking on the Bulldogs, this will be followed by the U15's & U17's Sharks Academy teams
Then the Mathews & SG Ball take on the might of the Western Suburbs Magpies with the SG Ball clash sure to be the match of the round when we take on competition leaders coached by local genius Jason Williams.
The Magpies SG Ball are with out question the standout team in the comp and will prove a real test for the Shire boys, if the Sharkies can play at their best they are a good chance to win this important game
So get down to Sharks Park next Saturday and support our local juniors. |

JUNIOR SHARKS GET READY FOR BULLDOGS
Story & Photo's By :
The Cronulla Sharks Under 14, 15 and Under 17 Academy teams have been training hard and have only 2 weeks until their battles with the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs on Saturday March 26 at Shark Park.
The junior Sharks have been coming along nicely under the expert guidance of Sharks Junior Academy Co-Ordinator Alan Wilson and the other coaches and Alan is particularly happy with the progress of the Under 17's Academy Squad.
But last night it was the Under 15's who improved the most, the Under 15 are leaning about attitude and the importance of communication in defence and not can be quite scarey to any attacking team they wil face, if they remember what they have learnt.
The three Sharks Academy games at Shark Park will be only the start of the the days as the Shire junior talent will be followed by round 6 of the Harold Matthew's & SG Ball Cup matches where the in form u18 SG Ball side take on the might of the the competition leaders the Western Suburbs Magpies.
So put Saturday March 26 into your diaries and get down to Shark Park for a full day of fantastic junior rugby league
Thanks to Mr. Alan Wilson and the Sharks Academy staff for allowing us to once again attend the Academy boyz go through their paces. :-) |

FROM WATERBOY TO PRESIDENT
JUNIOR LEAGUE TAKE NEW DIRECTION
Story & Photo By :
Congratulation to Mr. Peter Saville from the Cronulla Caringbah footy club on his election to President of the Cronulla Sutherland District Junior Rugby League.
Peter has been helping teams in the Shire for years including his own club Cronulla Caringbah, Sharks Deveolpment programs and is a well know face amoung both the kids who play the game and plenty of parents inside and out side of his club.
Peter is a brave man for putting his hand up to serve as Junior League President, which can be a challenging post for most of us. We wish you all the best in your new role.
We also congratulate the Junior League committee on elevating Mr. Saville to the Chair and we look forward to a closer relationship with the League in 2011 and beyond. |
