JUNIOR SHARKS SQUADS ANNOUNCED

The Sharks have announced train-on squads for the 2009 Toyota Cup, SG Ball and Harold Matthews Cup competitions.

The three respective squads will come together for an orientation meeting in November before commencing pre-season training shortly after.

After fielding a relatively young side in 2008, the Sharks Toyota Cup under-20’s will welcome back a number of last year’s team in 2009, including the likes of exciting youngsters Ben Orcher, Jayson Bukuya, Blake Ferguson and Nathan Stapleton along with last years Toyota Cup player of the year Jack Bosden.

The Toyota Cup Sharks will this year be coached by Joe Grima, with the start of their competition to coincide with round one of the NRL on the weekend of March 13-16, 2008.

A number of Toyota Cup players will train full time during pre-season with Ricky Stuart and the Sharks NRL squad.

As for the under-18 SG Ball and under-16 Matthews Cup Sharks, training will be on in earnest prior to the Christmas period, beginning November 12, with their seasons kicking off on February 21.

Both junior representative squads at this stage have extended rosters, with the naming of final teams to be delayed until closer to the start of the 2009 competitions.

Tony Herman will be in charge of the SG Ball, with Kevin Farquhar and Colin Ward, the former St George and Penrith NRL player, now a Sutherland Shire local with young boys playing for Gymea, his assistant coaches.

Dave Howlett, who overseas the rugby league program at Endeavour Sports High School, returns as coach of the 2009 Sharks Matthews Cup team. He will be assisted by Steve Holz from Engadine and Shane Walker, an ex-Tigers NRL player now involved with the De La Salle club.

The Engadine boys seemed very confident at kickoff, but in the dressing sheds, we all had in the back of our minds, that this will be a very tough game, and it was a necessity to shut down Reece (Davidson) and Jezza (Jeremy Saville).

Engadine had alot of early ball, and before long, Jaron Sharp found his way to the line.

4 - 0 Engadine up.

Before long Woolooware had turned things around and Engadine found them selves on their heels, defending their line. Woolooware were set 4 a back line, and certain to score.

Until halfback Bryce mistaked Jordan Dow for Reece, and 'Cheeza' raced almost the length of the field to score under the dot.

10 - 0 Engadine.

Woolooware worked there way up the field due to some handling errors from the Enga boys. Some slack defence saw tommy find a hole and to put the ball over the line, just resisting dodgies chase.

10 - 6.Engadine

This saw the Engadine boys under a bit of pressure and were looking for an answer, soon michael lichaa found a way through some scattered defence and scored in the corner.

16 - 6 Engadine. Half time blew.

Again in the second half, Engadine proved dominant, with tommy fry, leading the engadine forward pack, making a man of the match performance. Very early in the half, Aaron Bennett found some tired defence out wide which saw him go half the lenth of the field to score. 22-6 Engadine.

Woolooware found some fight back and scored to make it 22-12. With only about 5 mins to go, michael ducked and dived over to assure Engadine the Mitch Healey Cup shield. Winning in 24 - 12.

SHARKS GET MEDIEVAL ON DRAGONS

Congratulations to Cronulla Caringbah under 15A's who are now the 15 A 2008 PREMIERS after a big win on Shark Park today.

From when Michael Lichaa kicked the ball off at the start of the game the Sharks were at their best, they were fast off the line, hitting the Dragons with 2 and 3 man tackles everytime and not allowing Engadine to get the ball to their speedy guys.

Jeremy Saville and his mate Michael Lichaa both scored doubles in the Grand Final and were again well supported by Cameron Paddy who rarely misses adding the 2 points.

Engadine didn't play thieir best footy today - MORE LATER & PHOTO'S TOO!

DE LA TOO GOOD FOR BOSCO

De La Salle proved revenge is sweet after defeating St. John's Bosco in this years Under 15B's Grand Final on Shark Park.

De La Salle only lost one game in 2008 and that was the 25 - 0 thumping Bosco gave the boys up at Sutho' oval 2 weeks ago in the semi.

SHARK VS DRAGONS
Now we get down to it this weekend when the two best team for the year finally get it on for real.

Cronulla Caringbah have been bitting at the teeth to get into this years Grand Final and will give Engadine a Grand Final welcome to Shark Park.

The Sharks have had the privilage of playing in the past few Grand Finals and will know what is required on Saturday, the Dragons who lead the comp for most of the year right up to the last game which they lost to... Cronulla Caringbah, but the Dragons boys will be quietly confident.

The Dragons bounced back with fire and destroyed the Sharks in the Semi a week ago and will face the same speedy Dragons line up that ran in 25 unanswered points.

The 15 A's Grand Final should be a cracker.

BOSCO VS DE LA
Bosco will be playing De La Salle in the 15 B's Grand Final this year.

Bosco gave De La their 1st defeat of the year in the Semi's and will be hoping to play well again.

De La on the other hand will be hungry for some more footy on Saturday and the boys can't wait to get onto Shark Park for some justice.

In the 15 B Competition, congratulations to St. John's Bosco for winning their way into this years Grand Final with a tight 14 - 17 over the previously undefeated De la Salle, De La will play Sutherland next week with the winner to play Bosco in the Grand Final.

15A's WRaP

Engadine played one of their best games of the year so far at Sutherland Oval.

The Dragons kept the minor premiers scoreless and raced in 4 tries, including 2 to Dragons forward Luke Dodge.

In the other 15A semi final game De La Salle were to good for the Gymea Gorilla's.

Gymea have been down on troop niumbers for the past few weeks.

Had Gymea had all their players the result would have been different as De La Salle played some very flat football and will need to lift their game about 100% to be serious in their title defence

St. John's Bosco are into the Grand Final after a good win over minor premiers De La Salle in the 15 B's 1 st Semi Final.

In the 2 nd Semi Final, Sutherland were good enough to hold out Cronulla Caringbah in a tough and well played encounter. Sutho' are still alive and are looking forward to a crack at De La who must be wondering what happened today.

If you are going to loose a game, a 1 st Semi Finals is not a bad on to loose as you get another go next week.

APOLOGY TO CRONULLA JUNIOR LEAGUE

A couple of stories that appeared on ourfootyteam in the past few weeks as caused some concern for the Cronulla Junior League.

The Junior League feared a story about the mighty Gymea Gorilla's u 15a'S forfeiting their round 18 games vs De La Salle may have suggested that some skullduggery was inlvolved with these decisions, this did not happen.

The decision to allow Gymea and other clubs to forfeit games due to injuries and not being able to field a team was the sole reason for allowing these forfeitures, there was no funny business involved as insinuated in ourfootyteam's story.

In regard to a story posted in July about the development squads the Junior League President Mr. Wayne Madden rightly pointed out that all development squad coaches are Level 2 accredited coaches, not simpliy volenteers from around the Shire.

As this story was pulled down after only 40 minutes, we did not contact the junior league about this issue as stated in the story.

The Junior League would also like to remind the footy world that "this excutive has extended the Cronulla Development squads from 1 under 15's squad to 4 full squads."

"There are only 5 Districts that have development squads for all 4 age groups, these are : Cronula, Balmain, Manly, Wests & Penrith all have Pathways programes." Mr. Madden said

In regard to the Story titled " STATE REP TOO SOFT FOR DEV SQUAD" ourfootyteam has been asked to point out that the selection process for club footy and school footy are different.

The Cronulla Junior League are dead set fair dinkum about the Development squads and plan to continue developing young men throughout the seasons with the hope of producing quality people to play for the Sharks NRL side.

Cronulla Caringbah took out this years minor premiership today after winning the top of the table clash against the Engadine Dragons.

WELL DONE SHARKS!!

In a game full of errors by both sides, Cronulla Caringbah managed to score 3 tries to 1.

Stacy Morell was the 1st to cross the line and score, Rea Pittman crossed over for 2 tries in the second half and Luke Dodge busted his way over the line for the Dragons only points for the day.

The Sharks forwards worked harder today, they all ran the ball hard and straight and in defence they stood up.

The Dragons all worked well, today the Dragons lacked some of the fire they usually burn sides with, Engadine did almost everything right except finish off, some off the credit has to go to the Sharks defence which was pretty tight.

What happened to the De La vs Gymea Gorilla's game, some how the Gorilla's managed to convince the Junior league to grant them a forfeit, which is strange as other teams have applied to postpone of forfeit games this year and were told no or it will cost you eight ( That's right 8 ) competition points.

Hopefully the Gorilla's will have a few more of their players back by then, if they can even have a couple blokes on the bench they should do well next week.

It doesn't matter as De La Salle will be playing Gymea in next weeks semi, with the return of their injured players De La will be spewing they didn't play today as they need the hit out to ready themselves for their premiership defence.

Menai Roosters avoided the wooden spoon in their game against the Aquinas Colts at Menai.

In a good close game both sides lost the plot late in the second half where an all in brawl resulted in an unnecessary hold on the action, then each team lost 1 player each and these blokes let their teammates down in the last game of the year.

Tries for the Roosters : Alex Belford 3, Rhyce Scott, Yahia Masri, Goals : Nathan Bailey 4

Menai have been steadily improving all year and now they know they can compete in the A grade. Well done to the Roosters on what can only be described as a successful step up from the B's.

Round 17 saw a triple header down at the NELL with all 6 under 15A teams doing battle at Marton Reserve.

The first game was between the late charging Menai Roosters and the Gymea Gorilla's, the Roosters had no trouble in the big win over the Gorilla's with convincing 36 - 18 win.

Gymea tried right to the end, finishing the game short with only 11 or 12 player on the field.

With a few players back Gymea would have been keen to show the Sharks that last time was no fluke.

Cronulla Caringbah returned to the winner list again this week proving much too strong for the Aquinas Colts.

Cronulla have some hard working backs that love to get the footy to have a run. One of the highlights of this game was Stacey's 3 tries.

De La Salle took on competition leaders the Engadine Dragons and proved the can get it on with the best going down for a 3 rd time this season in a close 22 - 18 scoreline.

Next week is the last round for another year and this year we have had some exciting times. A couple months agao the Gorilla's were giving the entire comp a shake with some enterprising footy which saw them defeat Cronulla Caringbah for the 1st time this millinia

The Aquinas Colts have had another successful season, but the highlight would have to have been their demolision of defending champions De La Salle 26 - 6 in round 4.

Menai Roosters have been more than competitive since coming into the A's this year and will be expecting bigger things from the boys in '09.

De La Salle had a set back against the Dragons and are starting to look the goods at the business end of the season, the fianl 4 places can not change and there fore we have our 4 finalists for 2008.

In week 1 of the finals we will see Engadine and Cronulla Caringbah fight it out for the right to go straight into this years big one.

The second game between De La Salle and the Gymea Gorilla's, the winner of this game will play the loser of the Engadine vs Cronulla Caringbah game the following week to see who is the best footy team for 2008.

Aquinas Colts stole victory after the bell to beat Gymea in round 16 today.

De La Salle played against Cronulla Caringbah on the carpark at Endeavour today.

De La hit the Sharks line early in the game and twice in the first few minutes scored tries after De La got on top right from the start of the game.

With a 12 nil lead, De La did well to hold out the Sharks when they had 3 sets with in 20 meter of the line and Michael Lichaa sneaked over to put his teams 1st points on the board approaching half time.

De La hit back with a try and had a suprising 6 - 16 lead over the 2nd placed Sharks.

The De La forwards continued to dominate the game pushing De La forward in both defence and gaining plenty of meters in some good attacking runs which gave the De La backs a run with the footy.

With the finals approaching in 3 weeks there will be a few teams looking over their shoulder after competition leaders were smacked by bottom placed Menai.

Menai won the game by 2 points, most of the Engadine blokes played in the High School Knockouts on Wednesday and may have been a bit score, but Menai are pretty tough and go forward and run the ball hard at the defence, and the Roosters are learning what playing A grade footy is all about.

With the Colts victory over the Gymea Gorilla's today, they find themselves only one game out of the top four, which will make the run to the finals a good race with all but the Rooster a chance for this years premiership. PHOTO'S SOON

Round 15 kicked off with De La Salle playing the Menai Roosters at Gwawley Oval with the Roosters a couple players unavailable due to injuries and the school holidays.

The Roosters faced an almost full strenght De La with the return this week of Reece Davidson & Andrew Montgomery and therefore had the luxury of players on the bench.

It was a good game of footy with scrappy passages by both teams and a couple brain explosions from a couple De La players.

In the end De La were good enough to take the 2 points to say in touch with the 2 top teams.

Yahia Masri scored the easiest try of his life after De La knocked on in goal & Yahia just happened to be walking that way anyway simpily bent over to touch the ball and it was an instant try.

The Roosters all should be very proud of themselves and their team mates this year, its been hard on the Menai boys in the A's this year, but they will learn heaps and take that into next year and should be alot more competitive. Good on ya's Menai.

Cronulla Caringbah were too good for an injury plagued Gymea Gorilla's outfit today and went on a bit of a scoring spree. The Gorilla's are missing thier angry fullback Kyle and the big forward was unable to play as well.

Engadine faced a very determined Aquinas Colts team and managed to score an 18 point win the Dragons sharing the points around.

Cronulla Caringbah handed Menai a lesson in rugby league today running in 9 tries to 1 with a final score line of 46 - 4.

Cronulla spread the ball far and wide in attack and were rock solid in defence.

Menai are a good team and at times threatened to break through.

They did some great last ditch defence as well to save more points.

TO Menai's credit they never stopped trying but silly penalties and dropped balls from sustained defensive pressure let them down Cronulla took full advantage and were just clinical going in for try after try with an average of one every five minutes with almost every try from great backline moves.

Overall a good clean game with good refereeing from Mitchell Floyd.

ROund 14 kicked off this afternoon after the Junior League make a couple slight changes to the 15b draw to allow sme B players play up because teems needed troops, thats a good thing by the Junior League.

Well Cronulla Caringbah hammered Menai by 40 points, the SHarks are at full strength and are trying to get ready for the finals in a few weeks, Menai have been mostly competitive in this their 1 st year in the A's, the Rooster have been doing it tough, but like true footy players, they turn up each week with plenty of emthusium and that should follow thru to next year where the Roosters will be a much better side.

Cronulla Caringbah need to show they can play like today when playing the better teams in the comp, so not too much can be taken from this game except Cronulla Caringbah played well.

While Dragons coach Corey Makim was out on Sydney Harbour on a wedding cruise, his Engadine team put on the MIchaell Morris show, Mick crossed for 5 tries, kicked 3 goals, Harry scored as well and Cheeza booted 3 goals too.

The Competition leader have put their hands up in 2008 and at the moment are the best side in the comp.

Engadine kicked a penalty goal after the fulltime bell to defeat Cronulla Caringbah, a 12 man De la Salle were much too good for Gymea and Aquanis galloped ahead of Menai.

The Engadine Dragons haven't sniffed a victory at over Cronulla Caringbah at Endeavour Field for many years and now they have broken that hoodoo in round 13.

The dragons were the better team on the day but just couldn't put the Sharks away, the Sharks kept biting back to counter every Engadine point.

Gymea have been the form side in the comp for the pat few weeks but their roll came to a big halt as Team Spirit kept De La in the game up to half time were the visitors enjoyed a small 6 - 8 lead at the break.

The 1st half was a mistake ridden affair, it was possibily the worst half of footy played this year with both teams dropping too much ball and only De La Salle completing 3 sets for the entire half.

De La once again relied on their U15B's for troops and needed Blayne yesterday to make up the 12 players. Blayne looked uncomfortable out on Monty's wing, but played well, was reliable in 'D' and made some good meters.

The second half was a competely different story when De La ran in 3 tries to nil.

The Gorilla's were missing their exciting and agressive fullback Kyle, but apart from a couple of injuries, the Gorilla's had a full bench of reserves and can offer no excuses for their poor performance. The Gorilla's also surrendered 3 rd spot of the ladder to De La Salle in the race for the finals.

The Aquinas Colts outlasted The Menai Roosters at Blaxland Oval, posting a tight 18 - 16 win to keep in touch with the top four.

De La Salle played Cronulla Caringbah at Endeavour Oval and turned up ready to rock 'n' roll.

De La Salle showed real team spirit and determiination to take the field with only 12 players and competed very well for 80 % of the game, then they lost fullback Aaron Faulkner due to an injury.

Cronulla Caringbah took advantage of the 11 man De La and ran in a couple late tries to blow out the score after a very close and tough football match.

Cronulla Caringabah look dangerous when Michael Lichaa runs the footy, he has some big forwards that run with him for options, then you can also throw in Rea Pittman, Scott Sorenson, Joseph Drinkwater and they go good.

Tommy Fry went good today and so did little Herndo who was playing out of position on the wing & was good enough & sneaked in for a great try in the corner.

De La were well served by the usual mob they also had a couple boys from the under 15 B's step up again and they played really well.

Engadine had to work very hard according to coach Corey Markim for their 2 points today with the scores at nil all appraoching half time.

This gives the Mighty Dragons the competition for hte 2 nd week & lead after round 12 of the 15 A's comp.

The big news of this week this the Aquinas Colts defeating Gymea, the Colts are a very good footy team & have been steadily improving over the past 2 years now are going to have a cracker jack go at the finals.

The 15 A's comp is the tightest comp we have had for a few years now with no team favourites to win the flag.

Engadine, Gymea, Menai & De La Salle all backed up from playing on Wednesday night at Shark Park, well done to all involved.

JUNIOR LEAGUE CATCH UP GAMES
The Cronulla Junior League played 3 catch up game at Shark Park last night with two more games tonight and then 3 more next week.

The first game was an under 15a's game between De la Salle and the Gymea Gorilla's.

Gymea are the form team of the past couple weeks after their fantastic 2 point win over Competition leaders Cronulla Caringbah two weeks ago.

De la who have been plagued by injury this year stood up tonight to grasp a last second draw when Luke Manahan kicked a simple 43 meter goal after a well deserved penality.

Gymea play good footy these days, they stick to a good plan, their plays are pretty simple, Jack kicks on the fourth or fith to keep the opposition away from their own line and it keeps oposing team on the back foot, if you let them, the Gorilla's will eventually wear you down.

Tonite we saw Jack Sommerfield go in for 2 really good tries and had the De la parents a bit worried (ha ha, parents, we've all got them) and young Ryan Willis is kicking well to convert 3 from 3 attempts.

De la scored more tries than Gymea which is a good sign coming to the business end of the season, but with most of its team almost playing, De la are looking forward to the finals and playing a few teams in the comp at full strength.

Engadine were again too strong for Menai as they scored a cold 18 - 8 win to keep wiining games of footy, Engadine are the scary team this year, on their day they are fast, full of it and hard to stop.

Oh yeah, there were a few spies from CC looking, looking tonight hey boyz

WEDNESDAY NITE GAMES AT SHARK PARK
There will be some good footy played on Sharks Park this Wednesday night with the Cronulla Junior League playing a few catch up games under lights.

In the Under 15A's, De la Salle get to play their round 3 game & the Engadine Dragons have to replay their called off game against the Menai Roosters.

With all four teams building towards the finals they should provide some really good footy, so grab a few blankets and your beanies and come to Shark Park on Wednesday night.

Engadine take on Menai at 7:30 pm and De la Salle play Gymea at 5:30 pm and there is an under 16's game on between.

Competition leaders Cronulla Caringbah were maybe the best they have been all year in attack against the Aquinas Colts to earn a 36 - 16 win.

The Colts are getting better with each game this year and credit to the playing group were are to rake up 16 points against the Sharks.

In terms of structure the Sharks are starting to put it all together and are playing at times like a hot footy team.

Form side the Engadine Dragons hard to work hard for the whole game to keep De la Salle at bay.

The Dragons are well coached and get the ball to good field position then harry or some one else run one of their slick & well practiced plays.

The Dragons first try came when Brad Ring was looking for an intercept then he found the ball in in hands with the line open and Ringy scored under the dot, & he converted.

Gymea moved up to 3 rd place on the 2008 Under 15 A's ladder after a well earned win over the Menai Roosters.

Gymea have been improving all year and must be excited as a group as this is the highest the mighty Gorilla's have been on the ladder at this time of year, so well done wiggy's boys.

How cold was it today for all the parents and spectators around the grounds today, but the action on the fields was hot, hot hot.

Gymea outplayed competition leaders Cronulla Caringbah to record an impressive 24 - 22 victory, and it was a Cronulla - Caringbah home game.

De La Salle are back in the winners circle after a hard fought tough game against the ever improving Menai Roosters at Menai.

Menai came out in the 1 st half really pumped knowing they had a tough job in front of them with De La at almost full strength with the return of NSW State Rep's Zac Wederswieler & Gene DuBois, Nick Pleasence and Andrew Montgomery.

Menai scored the 1st 2 tries of the game and led 10 - 4 at the half time break.

Then in the 2 nd half De la started to show some of the form that won them last years grand final with Nick 'RAT' Ratcliffe sniffing around to score a couple great tries, Dion Beattie put the sealer with long distance try then Ratcliffe combined with De la full back Aaron Faulkner to hold up a determined Roosters attack over the line right next to the posts, it was great 'D'. De la won the game 18 - 14.

Engadine have continued their fantastic season with a seemingly easy win over the Colts, but knowing the way the Colts always turn up for a game, they must have been playing well to keep the Dragons to 24 points.

UNDER 15's IN ACTION
RouND 9 WRaP uP
Something is in the air in the Under 15 A competition this year with all teams cabable of beating each other on their day.

Now all teams in the 15 A's competition have a victory under their belt after the Aquinas Colts were too good for De la Salle at Captian Cook oval.

The Colts are a good side, they play well against good footy teams & today they knew they were a red hot shot to take the 2 points.

The Colts started the game going forward and using their backs & scored first to lead De la Salle for the 1st time in a few seasons.

De la simpily ran out of troops with some guys on the bench having just played in B's game just before the 15's game.

The De la Salle players who played up were terrific, they got smashed by the more experienced Colts defenders and kept putting their hands up for the ball.

Taking nothing away from the Colts game, they were just to strong for De la today

Cronulla Caringbah continued their winning form and were too good for an improving Menai Roosters outfit to win a close game 22 - 10. This win cements the Sharks at the top of the pile so far this year.

Engadine Dragons out muscled a revigerated Gymea Gorilla's to record a ten point victory at the final bell 18 - 8. Dodgie is still out & the word is that he won't be sticking his thumb up at anyone for a while.

ROUND 8 WRAP

This week the match of the round should have been at Anzac Oval with the top two teams in the comp doing battle.

Cronulla Caringbah were good enough to hold off when the Dragons really breathed a bit of fire at the end of the game to make the Sharks hold hard in 'D' to win by 2 points in a close game. Rea scored a couple of tries, which was handy considering the score.

The Aquinas Colts grabbed 2 very valuable competition points at Akuna Rd with a gutsy hard fought win over the Menai Roosters, it's pretty tight at the bottom end of the table with the Colts only one game behind the Roosters and both sides still in with a go at the finals.

In what turned out to be a battle royale at Captain Cook oval when the home side played the Gorilla's for the 1st time this year, they have yet to play their round 3 game.

Gymea are a much improved footy team this year, with a few new guys, they must have thought they were in with a real show of stealing the 2 points against a much depleted defending Champions.

The teams went tong & nails with neither team able to command the score board & went try for try right to the end of the game, and Drew the De la coach must be rapped to score the 1 point from today.

Congratulation to Zac Wedesweiler for being chosen to represent the NSW CCC in the Under 15's Rugby League squad to play in Brisbane at the Australian Schoolboys Championships in a couple of weeks.

Zac, was one of plenty who didn't play in the game against Gymea was selected for NSW CCC today after 2 days of intense footy against the best players in the Catholic Schools around all of NSW.

A few local boys played for SICC (look it up) and his team mate Nick Ratcliffe and the Sharks Joseph Drinkwater, David Pasqualino from the Colts & Kyle Albert (CBSA) from the Gymea Gorilla's also fought it out with the country boys, the 5 Shire kids did real good and won a game & drew a game yesterday & today SICC wen 't good enough in the Under 15's final.

Nick Ratcliffe backed up for De la after playing early Saturday morning and would be in a coma now. (if u did to joe, good on ya)

ROUND 7 WRAP UP

What a weekend of footy round 7 turned into.

Competitions leaders the Engadine Dragons finally get a home game at home, then batter bing, Michael Morris got a knee to the head in the early part of the second half at Anzac Oval and rather than move the little champion, the game was called off with the Dragons leading 6 - 4 & with the Roosters having a kick to come, who knows how that game was going to go? So we hope u will be ok Mick.

Cronulla Caringbah fought hard in the first half in the game of the round at Sutho' Oval against old enemy De La Salle.

Both teams traded blows & tries up to half time with the game evenly balanced at the break.

The second half was just as competitive as the first with both teams going hard at each other scoring a try each. De La with only 13 players including one from the 15 c's & one from the 14a's (well done boys) playing well.

As De La ran of of troops and steam, the Sharks took advantage when Cameron "pek" Paddy runs thru a big gaping whole 4 meters out from the line and crossed from dummy half, Cronulla put on a couple more tries to finish off the game reasonably well to take the 2 points.

This game was one of the best ref'ed games so far this year, well done to the ref's & their coaches, My word - " Ref's ya can't play with out 'em " PHOTO'S SOON

REVENGE IS SWEET.

Cronulla Caringbah U15A v De La Salle U15A
Final Score 28 - 14
Saturday, 17 May 2008

The game got off to a quick start with De La taking advantage of a Cronulla mistake they regathered the ball and made it look easy down the clubhouse side to scoring in the corner.

Luke Manahan missed the conversion. 4-0 Cronulla’s Michael Lichaa put the “kick off” right up in the air and it carried with the wind ending up over the dead ball line.

Soon after Cronulla’s utility forward Luke Brown who is pushing for a development squad jersey got a nice overlap and shoved his way over for a try. Michael got the conversion.

6-4 The next try was all De La’s fast talking Rory Hood who took a moment off from directing traffic to steal a brilliant intercept and score under the posts. Luke Manahan potted it over for a 10-6 lead.

Possession is key and Cronulla were soon back into it with some good ball down on De La’s line to for Cronulla struck back soon after with a barging run by big Tokerau Raru “Toks” to score almost right under the posts.. Michael kicked the conversion 12-10 for Cronulla.

It wasn’t all straight shooting for Cronulla who got the “wobbly” boot and started dropping balls and making some fundamental errors which let De La have 3 sets of six on their line.

Reece Davidson smashed through a hit from Joseph to score near the posts. Luke hit the posts on the conversion attempt but it bounced away. 14 – 12 De La’s way.

The second half seemed to be a different game with Cronulla Caringbah forwards winning the war in and around the ruck. Big “Toks” made ground up the middle as did the smaller but no less enthusiastic Jeremy Saville.

Michael threw a great “dummy” which left the De La defence saying “where did he go “and scored. 18-14
Cameron Paddy did the same zipping through the gap to score shortly after and capped off a really good game from the little “General” 22-14

Cronulla’s had the bulk of the possession in the 2nd half and they converted it into points however Big Zach Wedersveiler didn’t give up and make some great yards up the middle of the Cronulla pack.

De La threatened Cronulla line on a number of occasions with Jackson Clarke making a break.

The Cronulla defence hung in despite Nick Radcliffe doing all he could for De La and showing why he is a form player this year.

Luke Manahan was seeing stars after a hard collision with the powerful running Rea Pittman and Stacey Morrel showed great pace to score a nice one in the corner. Michael Lichaa continued his great form from the sideline with a last minute wind change carrying the ball back inside the sticks.

28-14 There’s no love lost between these two teams.

It’s a bit of a “State of Origin” affair but it’s good to see the boys shake hands and wish each other well after the game. The De La boys were vanquished today but the look in their eye said “we’ll get you next time”

The victorious Cronulla Caringbah team left feeling a little chuffed with a hard fought victory under the belt.

ROUND 6 UPDATE
Captain Cook oval was again the center of attention with a couple of fantantic games of under 15's rugby league.

De La Salle u 15'b (2) have been a team on the move, saturday they faced Gymea who put a bit of a scare into the competition leaders De La side last week missing taking home the game by only 1 point, was it that little sneak Ellis that popped a field goal, De La (2) bravely fought back from a 2 tries down with 2 great team tries to level the scores at the later stages of the game.

Gymea however were good enough to control the game and put on the winning tries, well done to both of these team.

The much vaunted De La Salle U15a's played the much improved Engadine Dragons.

The Dragons turned up to Capt Cook oval with the eye of the tiger in them, wow, what a display we saw from the Engadine boys.

Engadine play very well against De La & combined well with a simple game plan that is deadly, close down the De La halves, restrict the ball getting to the De La forwards, then their speedy backs don't come into the equation at all. This doesn't allow the De La backs into the game. De La are missing their right winger.

It was a very physical game with plenty of classic hits with the return of holiday harry directing his troops and in control of the middle of the paddock. Luke Dodge, the 2 red heads, cheesa, wingy and young Denford having blinders.

There were tiny moments when De La were desprate and we saw glimpes of go forward from the home side.

Jesse Faye was the best player for De La who had plenty of good runs every time he got the footy, Nick 'RatAttack' Ratcliffe played strong and was rewarded with a second half try when he out ran the Dragons defenders down the left wing. Well done the Dragons, thats 2 from 2 so far this year and Engadine are the pace setters in this comp.

Cronulla Caringbah got on with the job against The Colts and had to work hard for their 32 point victory, the Sharks have had some good wins so far this year, but their defences seems to close down and they allow teams to score, Joe & Noel will no doubt be having some concerns over this. Stacey crossed for 3 tries.

Comp newcomers Menai added another 2 points to their '08 tally with a good win over the Gymea Gorilla's, that 1 win each for these to sides, so the teams are pretty close in on the footy field, which is great for the comp.

3RD PLACE PLAY-OFF
The play-off for third place between Sydney North and Sydney West was another solid game and also played in very good spirit, I have to say that sportsmanship was a big winner on the day all games were played hard and tough but not one incident of bad play was seen, all players are to be congratulated for the sportsmanship that was on display.

Sydney West ran out winner with the final score being 28 to 6 the scorers were.

SN: 6

FINAL FOR FIRST PLACE

The final for first place between Sydney South West and Sydney East was a wonderful game with SSW shooting out to an early lead and going to the break with a lead of 20 to 8.

SE wasn’t finished though and what was said by the coach at half time worked as the boys came out breathing fire and the game was in the balance right to the end.

SSW were only able to cross for one second half converted try while SE ran in four tries and only failed to even the score by one conversion. Sydney South West hung on gamely in the last minute as SE threw the ball around with abandonment in an all out effort to cross the line but the final siren sounded much to the delight of the SSW players.

SSW: 28
Tries : Josh Neale 3, with one each to Jacob Gagan & Aydan Gardner.
Goals: Troy Errington 4 from 5

SE: 26
Tries : Evander Cummins 2 with 1 each to Stacey Morrell, Ekiaki Politoni, & Michael Morris.

A GREAT DAY OF RUGBY LEAGUE

SYDNEY SOUTH WEST V SYDNEY WEST

The 2008 Sydney Rugby League Championships were contested at The Western Weekender Stadium at St Marys before a very acceptable crown for schoolboy league.

The standard of play these days is so superior to that of even ten years ago, it no longer looks like 15 year olds such is the quality of play.

This writer only saw the under 15s games on the day and the first game was between Sydney South West and Sydney West with lots of big, and I mean big hits in defence.

The final score being 30 -14 in favour of SSW but I can assure you the score in no way indicated the closeness of the game, it could have gone either way had SW had not made errors at crucial times such as dropped ball.

It was a very entertaining as were all four games on the day.

In the game between Sydney East and Sydney North we saw another game with monster hits that could almost be felt on the sideline.

The attacking play was most enterprising particularly from SE but North clung on as hard as they could but were not able to prevent the Sydney East team from their scoring spree.

East had a healthy contingent of players from Endeavour Sports who have proven themselves as quality players in every game this writer has seen.

ROUND FIVE WRAP UP U 15A's

This week saw the return to the Under 15 A's competition of the 2 boys who stepped up to play Harold Matthews Cup with the Sharks this year.

Well done boyz, we all hope you loved the experience.

It looked like Rea & Stacey had to work very hard with their Cronulla Caringbah team mates to over come a determined Gymea side who held a 4 - 0 half time lead

But the Sharks came out a different side lead by powerful runs by Joseph Drinkwater who ran 60 meters through the Gymea traffic to add 4 points after the break.

The Gorilla's made a few mistakes which resulted in turnover and Cronulla Caringbah tried to run rampant.

Gymea played well for most of the game and should all have their heads help high tonight coz the boys didnt get flogged.

Engadine still retain top position thanks to a visit to Blaxland Oval to play the Aquinas Colts, the Colts are always tough and expecially at home.

But the Dragons out ran the Colts with superior fittness and ran away with the game and took home the 2 points.

Menai were at home to the might of De La Salle and De La played awesome footy in the first half running in a 0 - 28 point lead.

ROUND 4 WRAP UP

After a miserable week weather wise, it was great to see the boys playing footy today, the under 15 A's played at three different grounds this week and it looks like most teams are struggling to control the footy & complete their sets.

After accounting for the Colts last week at Como, the Menai Roosters gave it to the Sharks right through out the game and look like they could be a tough outfit to beat this year & ran out of steam as the experienced Cronulla Caringbah did enough to take the 2 points.

After a scrappy first 10 minutes De La Salle were able to put the first points on the board against the Colts this year when new comer Gene DuBois crashed in the corner. Both teams struggled to control the footy with too many simple errors that cost the boys possession. De La were too good for the much smaller Colts and had too many guns for the Aquinas boys to handle.

The Dragons did enough to win against a determined and improving Gymea out at Engadine to remain on top of the 15A comp, De La Salle and Gymea are still to play their round 3 game with both teams eager to get it on the sooner the better. Well done fella's, hope there are not too many injuries.

The Menai Roosters, last years 14B Champions have put their first points on the board in the A grade comp this week win a convincing win against Aquinas Colts. Well done the Roosters.

In the Other game at Syclla Bay Oval, Cronulla Caringbah over came a determined Engadine Dragons team to record their second win so far this year.

The De La Vs Gymea game has been defered to another time, most likely to be played on Wednesday night, with a bit of luck the boys will get to play on the brand new Shark Park, we will have to wait to see what the junior league decide. PHOTO'S | Dragons Vs Sharks | Colts Vs Roosters |

SHARKS UNDER 15's TOO GOOD FOR FWAS

It was great to see the Far Western Academy boys again this year,

It was great to see the Far Western Academy boys again this year, we saw some familar faces & a few new ones too from last years Nyngan trip.

The Academy boys only arrived in Sydney late Thursday afternoon atfer thier long 10 hours on the bus.

The Academy boys turned up to Endeavour field and were welcomed by our fantastic Sydney weather. These kids havent seen rain like they saw yesterday for yonks.

the footy, the Cronulla boys played really well, dominating in most positions and there fore the scoreboard as well, the scoreline of 44 - 0 was not quite how the game went with the Academy boys playing some good stanza's of footy, it was the Cronulla sides fierce defence that denied their line to be crossed.

The FWAS team played against the Parramatta U 15 Development team a few weeks ago and played much better in that game, or it was either the junior Sharks played really well (they did) or the Academy boys had a shocker.

Although the score line blew out towards the end of the game, the Academy boys were well disiplined, the game was played with great comradarie and played in the spirit of our 100 year old game.

Unfortunately the rain hampered any activities planned for the visiting FWAS squad, the weather did not affect the boys appatite as they howed down on the food at the BBQ, head BBQ chef and Cronulla Junior League Reps Sec Ken Fitzgerald who does cooks a mean snag was delighted with the game, "we are looking forward to our partnership with the FWAS"

Hopefully one of you champion parents can write us all a decent match report (GRANT)

FWAS head coach Col Wright said the future looks good for junior footy in both area's and look forward to the return leg next year.

ROUND 2 U 15A's

Round 2 kicked off & ended with just 2 undefeated teams in the Under 15A's competition with the Engadine Dragons and Gymea Gorilla's outright leaders the points table.

The Gorilla's held of a strong and determined Colts outfit to get home by the mearest of margins, 2 points.

Engadine are a good side and even without holiday harry were too good for the Menai Roosters, the Dragons piled on 46 points and must have shared the football around all day.

Last years Grand Final replay between De La Salle and Cronulla Caringbah was played at Capt. Cook oval with both team putting their bodies on the line for their teams.

The defending Premiers were the winners again on the day with some good well organised defence and plenty of go forward from the big boys, when this happens teams are busy back peddling and De La give the ball to thier backs and it's usually not good news for their opposition as De La can pile points on any side. The Academy team draw their players from as far away as Broken Hill.

It will be the first time some of these boys have been to the city or the beach so it's a real experience for them.

I'm sure the boys will appreciate a good crowd on the day.

If you're not doing anything that day in the holidays come and watch an entertaining game.

When last years under 14's visited Nyngan for a few days, the local people really turned it on.

The boyz, they went wild pig chasing, visited a farm with a plane in the shed next to a huge tractor, a fantastic dinner which included yabbi races for the boyz and the travelling parents, so c'mon, tell everyone to come and watch the game. Ed

FOOTY SEASON KICKS OFF

The Cronulla Junior League kicked off yesterday with the mighty under 15A's doing battle at Gwawley Oval when the Gymea Gorilla's took on new comers to the A comp, the Menai Roosters.

A month ago, it looked like the Gorilla's would not even have a team, but kids have come out of the woodwork to form 2 under 15 teams this year.

The Gorilla's won this game quite comfortably winning 20 - 4, welcome to the A's Menai.

The match of the round was next when defending Premiers De La Salle took on an inspired Engadine Dragons. The dragons have been fired up for this game for months.

Engadine have recruited some good little players in the off season and a new assistant coach in Steve Holtz, Engadine have stepped up this year and there is a bit of Holtzie razz-a-matazz in some of their plays.

The Dragons were into the De La defence with a some very solid hits, the Dragons punched through to allow Ryan Giles to cross for the 1st of his tries to give the Dragons a 8 - 0 lead at half time.

De La came out after the break and were keen to spread the ball, they got close to the line when big De La forward Zac Wedesweiler hit the line at full power and crashed over for his 1st try of the year to put De La on the board, Zac scored his second try in the same way by taking 4 defenders over the try line with him.

De La clawed their way to lead 12 - 10 with only minutes to go Engadine snuck in to score the winning try & giving the Dragons a confidence boosting rare victory over De La Salle.

In the 3 rd Under 15 A game, Cronulla Caringbah played the Aquinas Colts at Endeavour #2.

Although the Sharks won easily, the Colts were actually in the game, just not on the scoreboard, Cronulla Caringbah just had too much firepower.

Stacey Morelli was given a release from the Matthews Cup squad to play and had a few good breaks, Tom Fry had some good runs, Michael Lichaa controlled the ruck fairly well and the Shark simply rolled over the Colts.

All teams had a good hit out in round 1 & all teams will improve as the footy season goes on, this looks like the most exciting comp in ages. Bring it on | PHOTO'S SOON |
