TONY CONCH BACK FOR ANOTHER CRACK WITH DE LA SALLE 16's

De La Salle Caringbah JRLFC have appointed Tony Conch as the Under 16’s coach for the 2009 season.

Tony last coached at De La in 2004; in 2003 he was the Premiership winning coach, winning the Under 16’s competition.

In 2005 Tony was Assistant Coach of the Kingsgrove Colts Under 21’s, Premiers in the St George District.

That same year he was selected as Assistant Coach of the St George District Under 21’s Representative Team which was victorious in a Inter District Challenge Competition which saw teams competing from South Sydney, Balmain, Eastern Suburbs, and St George districts.

In 2006 Tony furthered his football career by accepting a position as Trainer and Conditioner of the Erina Jim Beam Cup Team competing in the NSWRL Competition.

Tony tells me it was a tough and extremely rewarding experience.

In 2007 Tony linked with the Aquinas Colts A Reserve Grade team as an Assistant Coach and Trainer, taking the team to the Final.

The former Bulldogs Junior was also the Medical Trainer for the Australian Army Team against the English Army in the Rugby League Armed Forces World Cup late last year.

He aims to bring all his experience to his new team, on and off the field.

Tony is looking forward to the challenge of season 2009.. LEARN MORE

PARRA EELS HOST NSW CCC IN TRIAL GAMES

The Parramatta Eels hosted two practice hits out for both the NSW CCC Under 18's and U 15's State Rep teams at the Fairfield Junior Footy Club.

Both NSW CCC teams recieved a real good work out by the Parra Eels SG Ball & world Champion Harold Matthews Cup teams in time for next weeks ASSRL Championships in Brisbane.

The Parramatta SG Ball team played the NSW CC under 18's and from the kick off both teams showed speed and power through the enter of the ruck and out wide.

Albert Kelly was instrumental in most of the CCC's play and snuck between defenders to score a try himself before the break and the visiting CCC were up 5 tries to zero.

In the second half the Eels spent a lot of time in defence and were starved of the ball while CCC piled on four more tries to one to finish a real good game before they head over to Perth in Western Australian for another practice game before they head up to Darwin for the Australian Schoolboys Championships in July.

The second game of the day was the Riegning 2008 Harold Matthews Cup Champions up against the NSW CCC Under 15's.

This game was the exact opposite of the Under 18's game with the Eels too slippery for the younger CCC boys.

Parramatta are a great footy team and the under 15's will have learnt a lot from their experience of playing this slick Eels outfit.

"We knew that this would be a tough trial, a really good test, we played a side that play really good football and we didn't have the ball in the second half and that cost us" said a happy coach Mick Lewis.

Mick is also the head coach of this year successful Harold Matthews Cup side and reckon " yeah, it feels kinda funny playing these boys" Mick also added that the CCC boys showed real character today

Although the Eels managed to work 9 tries accoss the CCC line, there ware plenty of positivies for the CCC boys to take up to Brisbane on Saturday when they fly up to the ASSRL Under 15 Championships.

The games were held at Fairfield Park, the home of the Fairfield JRLFC, They are a small and proud little club with only 3 teams this year, the teams are under 15's, under 11's and the mighty little under 7's. Good on ya's Fairfield footy club, it was a great day enjoyed by lots of players & their families and all.

HISTORY MADE AT NSW CCC TRIALS

The Northern Country Under 15's defeated MCS today for the first time in history according to coach Dave Koch.

After the game a very proud & excited coach said " It's was just an outstanding effort by all the boys, led by our four front rowers, they just dominated MCS in both attack & defence & they laid the platform for our outside backs. "

The Northern Country Under 15's won the game 20 - 4.

" I'd be surprised if we didn't get 8 - 10 players in the NSW CCC Under 15's squad "

" From our team we have players from far & wide, the boys came from the North West NSW, the NSW North Coast & the Hunter Valley. "

The boys should be proud of their effort & attitude towards their preparation, as we only had a one & a half training session on Thursday arvo. Also a big thank you to the boys families for their support & effort getting the boys here " SEE OURFOOTY ACTION PHOTOS

STUDENTS SELECTED FOR SOUTHERN COUNTRY

Red Bend Catholic College, long renowned as a breeding ground for young rugby league talent, has had 10 players selected to play in the prestigious Southern Country Catholic Colleges side and 13 in the Western Catholic Schools side.

Late last term, Red Bend Catholic College hosted selection trials for the Western Catholic Schools side.

Six under 15s college footballers were selected for Western from these trials and seven in the under 18s.

Cameron Clarke, Todd Graham, Kyle Baxter, Tobias Evans, Jarrod Nicholson and Joseph Gunn are the Red Bend representatives in the under 15s, while Cameron Miller, Luke Goodall, Jamie Graham, Jack Hall, Jake Grace, Lou Goodwin and Kye Redfern were selected to represent Western Catholic Schools in the under 18s.

On Monday, these students undertook the next round of trials against a strong Wollongong side at Cootamundra.

Red Bend sent a team of 13 hopefuls and from these 10 young footballers will represent Southern Country Catholic Colleges.

In the under 15s, Cameron Clarke, Todd Graham, Kyle Baxter, Joseph Gunn and Tobias Evans gained selection.

In the under 18s, Jamie Graham, Jake Grace, Luke Goodall, Jack Hall and Lou Goodwin will represent the side.

Gaining selection in the Southern Catholic Colleges side is a significant achievement. The zone represents catholic schools from across much of NSW and many past players have gone on to bigger and better things.

The selected students will now move to trials for the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges to be held in Bass Hill on May 23 and 24.

KILDARE CATHOLIC COLLEGE WIN HARDY SHIELD

Three years of preparation payed off on Wednesday night as our open rugby league team overcame a gallant Wagga High side to claim this year's Hardy Shield title.

The gripping encounter was eventually decided 2 minutes from the end of extra time as Zac Wilson slipped his way through to score off a deft pass from Mitch Mullins.

A large crowd witnessed one of the closest finals in recent history as the scores were locked at 8 all at full-time untill the Kildare match winner.

A reflection of how close the contest was would have seen Wagga High win the title should scores have still been locked at extra time as they where the first try scorers.

In a great team effort special mention must go to Captain Zac Wilson for his exceptional leadership as well as fellow Year 12 students Simon Drum,

Steve Irons, Ben Trevaskis and Bryce Koop who showed great maturity and commitment throughout the campaign. Congratulations to all 26 squad members and to Mr Peckham, Mr O'Connell, Mr Hunt and Mr Huntly and the greater school community for their support.
WAGGA HS TOPS LADDER IN HARDY SHIELD

Despite being down 8-0 mid-way through the first half, Wagga High remained composed, posting two late first half tries to be ahead 10-8.

During the first half, Kildare hooker Brenton Armstrong was badly injured and received a suspected dislocated elbow which resulted in the game being moved to the next field while he was attended to by medical staff.

In the second half, Wagga High ran away with the win scoring three unanswered tries.

The Riverina Anglican College (TRAC) kept their Hardy Shield aspirations alive with a come from behind win over Mount Austin High School.

Poor ball control and bad decision making resulted in neither team getting any momentum.

TRAC eventually took the win 14-6.

News from the 11 th March :

KILDARE COLLEGE AND WAGGA HIGH VIE FOR TOP SPOT

Following impressive first round Hardy Shield wins for both teams, the stage is set for the top two ranked teams to do battle, in what could be a preview of the grand final.

Kildare coach, Simon Huntly, is wary of the Wagga High team and the ability they have to put points on quickly.

“They will shift the ball around through their halves and on the edge of the ruck,” he said.

“We will have to right on our game defensively.”

“I’m hoping it isn’t a high scoring affair, we don’t want to get in a shootout with them.”

Wagga High coach, Andrew Morton, is hoping his forward pack will be able to match it with Kildare, believing they have the ascendancy in the backs.

“They have a pretty strong forward which is led well by their front rowers,” he said.

“Our forwards need to do a job for us and we will then be hoping to spread the ball wide.”

Kildare has focused a majority of their training on improving their defence and making sure the team doesn’t get carried away during the game.

“We have worked on our defensive technique and controlling the ruck,” Huntly said. “Last week we got caught up in the hype and gave away a few penalties so hopefully we can fix that.””Wagga High are the form team and we cant afford to give them a leg up during the game.”

Wagga High has also realised the importance of improving their defence for the clash, focusing much of their training this week on improving that. –

ST JOSEPH'S WIN FINAL OF COCHRANE CUP
The Scone Advocate
The commitment and determination of St Joseph’s High School’s under14s rugby league side paid dividends last week, winning the final of the prestigious Cochrane Cup.

The 22-man squad had been training for last week’s final against Mater Dei College for nigh on two years, according to school principal and coach, John Tobin.

“The boys have worked together and trained together for the last two years in preparation for this particular final,” he said.

“The intensity of their training and the commitment they have shown is the reason that they claimed victory.”

The Cochrane Cup is only open to Under 14s teams from Catholic and Independent Schools in NSW.

First rounds in the The Cochrane Cup commenced early last term with St Joseph’s coming out victors in the Hunter region.

The boys then went on to play against O’Çonnor Catholic for a place in the quarter finals.

O’Çonnor went down to St Joseph’s 50-14 ensuring St Joseph’s a place in the finals.

The boys then came up against St John’s Woodlawn and defeated them soundly, 24-4.

Progressing to the semi finals, St Joseph’s then took on Gilroy College and thumped the Parramatta-based team 52-6.

Securing a place in the final, St Joseph’s could smell victory but it was going to be a difficult finish.

Set against Mater Dei College, Captain Adam Clydsdale said it was a nail-biting event.

“It was neck and neck all the way and the lead changed four or five times,” he said.

Mr Tobin said the team scored two tries in the last five minutes of the match, sealing the game 28-20.

“It was a very close game but I think it was the boys’ determination and commitment that saw them rewarded in the end,” he said.

Adam and the boys agreed it was a great feeling to win.

“To know you’re the best in the state, it’s probably the best feeling I’ve felt in my life,” Adam said.

“And it was good to spend that moment with the boys.”

Mr Tobin said he admired the team for their intensity.

“Their code of commitment, behaviour and manners, even on the overnight trips away showed their solid commitment to win this competition,” he said.

Co-captain Nick Ritter said winning against Mater Dei was not an easy feat.

“They were a big side,” he said.

“But what we lacked in size, we made up for in speed. That and sheer will and determination.”

The boys said the support they received throughout the competition was crucial to their success.

“We’d like to thank Mr Tobin for his time with us and Country Rugby League development officer, Chris Brennan, for training us almost every Thursday,” Adam said.

“Also trainers, Brett Parkes and Graeme Walker and of course the boys for putting in the effort all year.”

Mr Tobin said he had never worked with a team sharing such enormous camaraderie and team spirit.

“In all my experience I haven’t seen anything like that and when it came down to a close final, that paid dividends,” he said.

The squad consisted of : Nicholas Walker, Ryan Chillingworth, Ethan Haggarty, Lyndon Christie, Ben Young, Nicholas Ritter, Adam Clydsdale, Glen Parkes, William Tudor, Tyler Bartholomew, Jacob Bailey, Codie McCarthy, Jaye Phelps, James Eveleigh, Duncan Collins, William Thorncraft, Alexander Walsh, Mitchell, Van Balen, Liam Parker, Brent Wilton, Sam Dykes and James Carr.
Patrician Brothers Vs Oakhill College PATRICIAN BROTHERS 48 –V- OAKHILL COLLEGE 6 - ARRIVE ALIVE

This was our first game in this year’s Arrive Alive competition against Oakhill College.

In the first 15 minutes the team ran in three well constructed tries.

After getting away from the game plan the team got back to basics and ran in a further 2 tries to ensure we went to the break with a handy lead.

With the commencement of the second half, Oakhill were placed under pressure and we took advantage and added a
further 2 tries.

This was an extremely good result with all players making a contribution.

Our next opponents will be St Dominics, who will be well prepared and up for the challenge.

The strong vocal support the team received from the 200 strong Blue and Gold army lifted the team and was very
much appreciated.

It is this type of support that ensures success and builds morale and school community.
