After previously traveling to country venues such as Forbes, Kempsey and Dubbo, NSWCCC are once again taking the selection trials to rural NSW.

West Tamworth Leagues Club is assisting in staging the trials, whilst Country Comfort Tamworth Towers is the preferred accommodation supplier.

Students from Catholic secondary schools across NSW will be vying for selection in either the 15's or 18's NSWCCC teams to compete in the ASSRL National Championships in Adelaide (15's) and Newcastle (18's).

The Australian Secondary School Rugby League Championships for the under 18's will be hoted by NSW CIS from Sunday 12 - 17 th July with a pre Championship meeting on Saturday 11th July.

Tony Conch with the 2003 U 16a Premiers - De La Salle

De La Salle Caringbah JRLFC have appointed Tony Conch as the Under 16’s coach for the 2009 season.

Tony last coached at De La in 2004; in 2003 he was the Premiership winning coach, winning the Under 16’s competition.

In 2005 Tony was Assistant Coach of the Kingsgrove Colts Under 21’s, Premiers in the St George District.

That same year he was selected as Assistant Coach of the St George District Under 21’s Representative Team which was victorious in a Inter District Challenge Competition which saw teams competing from South Sydney, Balmain, Eastern Suburbs, and St George districts.

In 2006 Tony furthered his football career by accepting a position as Trainer and Conditioner of the Erina Jim Beam Cup Team competing in the NSWRL Competition.

Tony tells me it was a tough and extremely rewarding experience.

In 2007 Tony linked with the Aquinas Colts A Reserve Grade team as an Assistant Coach and Trainer, taking the team to the Final.

The former Bulldogs Junior was also the Medical Trainer for the Australian Army Team against the English Army in the Rugby League Armed Forces World Cup late last year.

He aims to bring all his experience to his new team, on and off the field.

Both NSW CCC teams recieved a real good work out by the Parra Eels SG Ball & world Champion Harold Matthews Cup teams in time for next weeks ASSRL Championships in Brisbane.

The Parramatta SG Ball team played the NSW CC under 18's and from the kick off both teams showed speed and power through the enter of the ruck and out wide.

Albert Kelly was instrumental in most of the CCC's play and snuck between defenders to score a try himself before the break and the visiting CCC were up 5 tries to zero.

In the second half the Eels spent a lot of time in defence and were starved of the ball while CCC piled on four more tries to one to finish a real good game before they head over to Perth in Western Australian for another practice game before they head up to Darwin for the Australian Schoolboys Championships in July.

The second game of the day was the Riegning 2008 Harold Matthews Cup Champions up against the NSW CCC Under 15's.

This game was the exact opposite of the Under 18's game with the Eels too slippery for the younger CCC boys.

Parramatta are a great footy team and the under 15's will have learnt a lot from their experience of playing this slick Eels outfit.

"We knew that this would be a tough trial, a really good test, we played a side that play really good football and we didn't have the ball in the second half and that cost us" said a happy coach Mick Lewis.

Mick is also the head coach of this year successful Harold Matthews Cup side and reckon " yeah, it feels kinda funny playing these boys" Mick also added that the CCC boys showed real character today

Although the Eels managed to work 9 tries accoss the CCC line, there ware plenty of positivies for the CCC boys to take up to Brisbane on Saturday when they fly up to the ASSRL Under 15 Championships.

St. Joseph's High School 2007 CCC Cochrane Cup Champions

The 22-man squad had been training for last week’s final against Mater Dei College for nigh on two years, according to school principal and coach, John Tobin.

“The boys have worked together and trained together for the last two years in preparation for this particular final,” he said.

“The intensity of their training and the commitment they have shown is the reason that they claimed victory.”

The Cochrane Cup is only open to Under 14s teams from Catholic and Independent Schools in NSW.

First rounds in the The Cochrane Cup commenced early last term with St Joseph’s coming out victors in the Hunter region.

The boys then went on to play against O’Çonnor Catholic for a place in the quarter finals.

O’Çonnor went down to St Joseph’s 50-14 ensuring St Joseph’s a place in the finals.

The boys then came up against St John’s Woodlawn and defeated them soundly, 24-4.

Progressing to the semi finals, St Joseph’s then took on Gilroy College and thumped the Parramatta-based team 52-6.

Securing a place in the final, St Joseph’s could smell victory but it was going to be a difficult finish.

Set against Mater Dei College, Captain Adam Clydsdale said it was a nail-biting event.

“It was neck and neck all the way and the lead changed four or five times,” he said.

Mr Tobin said the team scored two tries in the last five minutes of the match, sealing the game 28-20.

“It was a very close game but I think it was the boys’ determination and commitment that saw them rewarded in the end,” he said.

Adam and the boys agreed it was a great feeling to win.

“To know you’re the best in the state, it’s probably the best feeling I’ve felt in my life,” Adam said.

“And it was good to spend that moment with the boys.”

Mr Tobin said he admired the team for their intensity.

“Their code of commitment, behaviour and manners, even on the overnight trips away showed their solid commitment to win this competition,” he said.

Co-captain Nick Ritter said winning against Mater Dei was not an easy feat.

“They were a big side,” he said.

“But what we lacked in size, we made up for in speed. That and sheer will and determination.”

The boys said the support they received throughout the competition was crucial to their success.

“We’d like to thank Mr Tobin for his time with us and Country Rugby League development officer, Chris Brennan, for training us almost every Thursday,” Adam said.

“Also trainers, Brett Parkes and Graeme Walker and of course the boys for putting in the effort all year.”

Mr Tobin said he had never worked with a team sharing such enormous camaraderie and team spirit.

“In all my experience I haven’t seen anything like that and when it came down to a close final, that paid dividends,” he said.

In the first 15 minutes the team ran in three well constructed tries.

After getting away from the game plan the team got back to basics and ran in a further 2 tries to ensure we went to the break with a handy lead.

With the commencement of the second half, Oakhill were placed under pressure and we took advantage and added a
further 2 tries.

This was an extremely good result with all players making a contribution.

Our next opponents will be St Dominics, who will be well prepared and up for the challenge.

The strong vocal support the team received from the 200 strong Blue and Gold army lifted the team and was very
much appreciated.

It is this type of support that ensures success and builds morale and school community.
