Thursday, July 20, 2006 - NSWRL MEDIA RELEASE
The New South Wales Rugby League has today ordered a full investigation into an incident in its premier school competition in Cessnock today.
Following the match, which had apparently been played without any disruption, a number of players became involved in a brawl and police were called to attend.
“It is too early to go into specifics but clearly any incident of this nature needs to be taken seriously,” NSWRL General manager Mr Geoff Carr said today.
“We have some 500 schools taking part in this competition each year and the hundreds of matches that we conduct are normally played in a tremendous spirit.
“For the sake of every competing school we need to ensure that we examine all aspects of the match and ensure all appropriate measures are taken in terms of disciplinary action where required.
“Rugby League is rightly proud of the opportunities that it offers teenagers through schools across the country and we will not tolerate anything that damages that reputation.” The match was played between All Saints Maitland and Chifley High School Mt Druitt. |
