The Corporate Sports Australian Schoolboys won the Second Test against the New Zealand Under 18s at the Rotorua International Stadium, Rotorua, 24 points to 12, to win the series 2 nil and confirm their World Champion status. The second test match presented a chance for the Corporate Sports Australian Schoolboys to complete their tour undefeated but as expected the task would not be easy. In wet and greasy conditions in the first half the game became an arm wrestle as both sides tried to gain the ascendency. Finally in the 30th minute a great try by Kieran Foran and a kick from the sideline, into the wind, by Ben Hunt saw the Australian Schoolboys lead 6 nil at halftime. The battle in the first half saw few spectators predict that 30 points would be scored in the second half. Australia again opened the scoring in the second half with a try to Brad Hudson when he backed up a great bomb close to the New Zealand line. This try was also converted by ben hunt and Australia led 12 nil. Australia were again next to score when Martin Kennedy stormed over the opposition to score next to the posts and with the conversion Australia had established a commanding 18 point lead. However the Kiwis hit back immediately following some Australian errors and scored two tries in three minutes to make the score 18-12. The Australians continued to weather the storm and eventually regained composure and mounted another attack to see the final try of the match to Ben Hunt. His conversion took the score to 24 -12 and from here the Australians dominated play to run out winners and complete an undefeated series. The Most Valuable Player was Jason Baitieri. Kevin Proctor was judged Player of the Series for the Australian team. This means that the Australian Schoolboys have regained the mantle of World Champions after defeating the England Academy in 2006 and now the New Zealand U18's in successive series. THe Australian schoolboys have won the 1 st Test match against New Zealand at Mt. Smart Stadium. Last years schoolboy Kevin Proctor (PBC) were amoungst the points again scoring another try for the Aussies. Jerermy Papamau (Hunter SHS) got the Aussies off to a grat start scoring only 8 minutes into the game, Ben Hunt (St. Brendan's) converted the 1st of his 4 goals for the day, the Aussies were running at 6 - 0. By the Kiwi's, who love playing any sport against Australia hit back to level the scores. A sneeky offload from John Mannah to Proctor lead to 4 points, and then Foran scored & Hunt added the 2 points, the Aussies lead at half time 12 - 16. The Kiwis came back after the break and scored straight away to level the scores. The Aussies tried a few set pieces which they were able to turn into points and by the end of the 2 nd half, the Aussies had raced away to be comfortable winners 20 - 40. The Kiwi selectors selected Kieran Foran as Australia's best on ground.

| SCHOOLBOYS WIN FIRST GAME IN NEW ZEALAND In their first game of the New Zealand Tour of 2007, the Corporate Sports Australian Schoolboys took on the Auckland Academy team at Mount Smart Stadium, the home of the Auckland Warriors. The game was a fast and open game and gave the Australians the chance for a strong hitout. New combinations took a while to develop but the Australians scored first with a great effort by Kieran Foran in the 10th minute of the game. This was then followed by some great handling from Ben Ridge and he crashed over in the 25th minute for a try that was converted by Ryan Hansen. The first half closed with a spectacular 70 metre try to Ryan Williamson which saw Australia lead 16-6 at halftime after the conversion by Ryan Stig. The second half saw some handling errors from the Australians and the Auckland side pounced to bring the score back to 16 -10. Another try to Ryan Williamson in the 45th minute saw Australia move ahead 20 -10. Constant pressure from Auckland saw the Australians stretched in defence but once again they withstood all that could be thrown at them by the Auckland side. In the 52nd minute Ryan Williamson scored his third try and following the conversion by Ryan Stig the score moved out to 26 -10 in favour of the Australians. After the game Troyden Watene was awarded the Man of the Match award from the Auckland Academy side. The Australian team now prepare to meet the New Zealand Under 18 team in a two test match series beginning on Saturday 29 September at Mount Smart Stadium # 2. A UNIQUE adventure will start for Wavell State High School student Troyden Watene-Edwards this week when he travels to New Zealand to represent the Australian Schoolboys rugby league team. Watene-Edwards, 17, has New Zealand heritage and admitted it would be odd having so many of his family coming to support him playing in the green and gold. ``I was born here but my whole family is from there,'' the Aspley Bronco said. ``Despite that they're proud and I know my parents want me to play for Australia, not New Zealand. ``I reckon we'll go well, we've got a few big boys but the Kiwis will always be tough over there.'' The tour of New Zealand is the last step in what has been a blockbuster of a year for the highly-rated former Arana Hills junior. Not only has Watene-Edwards been playing for his high school, he's also broken into the Queensland Cup team at Aspley and secured himself a deal with the Brisbane Broncos. But after a short time away from the football field, he said he was itching to be part of the two-test schoolboys tour. ``It has been a tough year and I did get a few niggling injuries towards the end but I'm feeling good for the break,'' he said. ``It should be a good trip I've been looking forward to it all year, it was a goal of mine to make the team after missing out last year and it'll be good fun to play against New Zealand.'' And the action won't stop following the tour, with the Year 12 student likely to return to his school exams before heading out into the wider world. ``I've got an apprenticeship lined up with the Broncos so that should give me something else to do besides football,'' he said. But with the new national under-20 competition to begin next year, don't be surprised if Watene-Edwards again has his non-football time limited in 2008. Jetstar Titans recruit Ben Ridge has become the fourth Titans contracted junior to be selected in the Australian schoolboys side after being named as an interchange for the Kangaroos recent match against the Junior Kiwis. The talented second-rower from St.Brendans College in Yeppon is just one of many young up and comers being nurtured through the junior ranks by Jetstar Titans Junior Development Manager Tom Searle and his team. "The future is certainly looking good" said Searle, "the depth of talent in this region has never been in question it has just been a lack of opportunity which has stalled many a youngsters development in the past. Now that we have the Titans, aspiring juniors can follow a clear pathway from their junior days all the way through to the Titans first grade squad and beyond...it just provides an incentive for performance and we are seeing that come through in our results". |

| NEW ZEALAND UNDER-18 TEAM NAMED FOR TESTS AGAINST AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLBOYS
Seven Australian-based players were today included in the New Zealand under-18 side to play two tests against the Australian Schoolboys over the next fortnight. Their selection followed a high-scoring trial at Mt Smart Stadium in which a team of New Zealand-based players faced a combination of New Zealand eligible players from Australia. Five of them are from Sydney clubs while the other two are living in Brisbane. Also named in the team are several players contracted to the Vodafone Warriors including 17-year-old prop Russell Packer and utility Constantine Mika, also 17, who both trained fulltime with the club’s NRL squad throughout 2007. Along with another of the club’s development players – prop Leeson Ah Mau – they were regulars for the Auckland Lions in the New South Wales Premier League this year. All three were also in the national under-18 side last year – Packer was captain – while Meli Koliavu, Mose Masoe and Ben Matulino are other survivors from that side. The team, coached by Ivan Harrison (Central Districts), is in camp at Auckland’s Millennium Institute to prepare for two internationals against the Australian Schoolboys. The first will kick off at 1.00pm at Mt Smart Stadium this Saturday (September 29) with the second test starting at 2.00pm at the Rotorua International Stadium on October 6. |

 AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLBOYS 2006 TOUR AWARDS
09/01/07 THE 2006 Australian Secondary School Rugby League Tour is the most successful squad to tour the Northern Hemisphere since 1999. After each game the team got together to pick a player's - player. The players, player was chosen by the players themselves while the Man of the Match awards were judged by the Coaching staff. The Aussie Squad also awarded a man of the match trophy to an opposition player the coaches thought was best for their team. Andrew Peach (team Manager) wanted to point out how difficult these decisions were.
"The disipline on and off the was the real story of these great young Australians, these young men have been great ambassators for our Country" The Major Awards of the Most valuable Player, Best Back & Best Forward on the tour were presented with magnificent trophies that were donated by the NRL. The NRL also arranged for a 'Man of the Match Award' for each of the seven Tour games.  AUSTRALIAN SECONDARY SCHOOL RUGBY LEAGUE. It took 3 planes, the 1st few squad members rocked into town at just before 7 am this morning to a very warm welcome by family and friends. More arrival news later, it's been a big day at the airport, the second plane with the boys arrived at about 11:50 and there was about a 40 minute delay while the Australian Quarantine Service cleaned everyone footy boots, good on ya Johnny. |

 SCHOOLBOYS FIGHT BACK FROM THE BRINK
11/12 - FOUR consecutive second half tries by Queenslanders Obadiah Geia (twice), Shannon Walker and Nathan Strudwick have lifted the Australian Schoolboys to a 36-22 win against the England Academy in Odsal. Having trailed the English 16-8 at halftime, the Schoolboys appeared destined for the first loss of their seven-game European tour. However Wests Tigers sensation Chris Lawrence struck a decisive blow at the start of the second stanza, scoring a brilliant 60m effort that turned the tide. Townsville’s Geia then posted two tries back-to-back, followed in quick succession by further four-pointers to Walker and Strudwick. The match was worthy of international status and very much a match of two halves. |

 FROM SCHOOLBOY TO STORMTROOPER03/02 AT JUST 17, Israel Falou has a long way to travel before he leads the Melbourne Storm to the promised land of premiership glory. But Falou is already being touted as a future star in the game, built in the same mould as dual international Lote Tuqiri. The shy teenager is set to be unleashed on the competition during this month's pre-season trials after gaining a taste of the action in a trial last year against Parramatta. In that contest, Falou, who stands 190cm and weighs 97kg, broke the ribs of former Eels winger Matt Peterson in a bone-crunching tackle. WORLD CHAMPIONS AGAIN After winning the first test the Australian boys were wary of the England side and expected a very tough match. The windy and wet conditions ensured that the side had to be at its best to win the second test. An attempted short kick off by the England side gave the Australian side good field position from the start and after just four tackles a wide kick by half back Chris Sandow allowed winger Obadiah Geia to swoop on the ball and score wide out. The try was converted from out wide by Chris Sandow. After only 1 minute of play Australia led 6 - 0 and they had the start that they wanted. England regathered their composure and put responding by putting plenty of questions to the Australian defence. With the greater weight of possession and applying plenty of pressure the England side scored in the 10th minute to level the scores at 6 all. The Australian team was struggling with the conditions but a penalty in the 17th minute allowed them to take the lead 8 - 6. However, in the 21st minute an Australian dropped ball allowed England to score wide out and take the lead 10- 8. This ignited the Australian team and after a great defensive set in the England half they finally forced an error in an attacking position.
From a set move from the resulting scrum, Israel Folau stepped his opposing winger to score wide out. Another great conversion from Chris Sandow meant Australia regained the lead 14- 10.
In the 35th minute the England side regathered a wide kick and the winger scored in the corner to level the scores at 14-all and that was the half time score. Coach Simon Huntly used the halftime break to allow the team to refocus on their goals and emphasised the need to adapt to the difficult conditions.
The side began the second half more confidently and was able to maintain possession more consistently. In the 47th minute the team worked to the 90 metre mark and hooker Joel Brown darted from dummy half and created space for Mitchell Pearce to score near the posts. Australia led 20- 14.
In the 52 minute England replied under the posts and again levelled the scores at 20 - all. In the 54th minute another great defensive effort rushed the England side and a wild pass was intercepted by Israel Folau and Australia again led by 6 points.
From this moment until the 79th minute the match rose to even greater heights as both sides endeavoured to break the other side's concentration. It was a game where great attacking plays were shut down through excellent defensive efforts. Members of the crowd claimed it was one of the most exciting and skillful displays of rugby league that they had ever witnessed and it was true Test Match football.
The tension was finally broken when Illawarra's Luke Muttdon dived over in the last minute after a brilliant flick pass by Man of the Match, and Man of the Series, Mitchell Pearce to seal victory and ensure the side won the Test Series 2 - nil.. Learn More at the ASSRL Website |
