ACADEMY THREE FROM THREE ACADEMY NEWS

DAY 13 - Both teams came out to face a big crowd at the Cabramatta club, swelled by the Saints' travelling parents and families.

The Parramatta side were visibly larger than their young academy Saints side - but your Saints didn't disappoint in a real classic.

As the game got underway Saints struggled to gain any field position and it came as no surprise when they finally succumbed to another barnstorming run from the Eels big second row who fed his centre to score outside after five minutes.

It ttok a while, but Saints were slowly finding their feet on this hot, humid Australian afternoon and on 16 minutes great vision by Rob Fairclough spotted Parramatta were short on the right - the half back finding the impressive fullback Matty Costello who in turn attracted the centre and wing before feeding Jordan Gibbons to go in unopposed.

A period of sustained pressure by the home side and some indiscipline by the inexperienced Saints resulted in the referee awarding the Parramatta side a number of penalties (which hopefully the boys will learn from).

This meant the Eels gained good field position and scored two quick tries, one converted, to give them a deserved 16-6 lead.

Good leadership qualities from (on the day captain) Brad Billsborough and some strong carries from the reliable Matty Lees and powerful Levy Nzoungou and George Lewtas kept Saints in the arm wrestle though, and at the half hour mark a well-worked try down the right again saw Gibbons go in for his and Saints' second try.

16-10 down at halftime, coach Derek Traynor told his charges to cut out errors and gain field position.

He also told them to keep playing in the correct parts of the field.

And it seemed to work as the second half couldn't have started better for Saints.

A fumble by Parramatta gave Saints good field position and the half back partnership of Elliot Jenkins and Rob Fairclough duly obliged in putting Matty Costello away who in turn fed the impressive and improving Lewis Furlong to score.

Gibbons converting to level the scores.

The next 20 mins became an arm wrestle with no further scores and both sides tired in the heat and came up with some basic errors.

But with only two minutes left Parramatta showed how much the game meant to them by going for a drop goal to make the score 17-16.

Cometh the hour... with no time at all left on the clock Saints came up with a massive defensive effort and forced their opposition to knock on.

A quickly formed scrum ensued and two plays later Saints put on the play of the game, Fairclough out the back finding his new half back partner in Jack Unsworth who in turn found a sublime short pass to the hard working impressive second rower Chris Follin who showed his pace to score in the corner.

Conversion was missed but who cares! This young Saints academy side never know when they are beaten.

At the end of the game former coach and now Parramatta's director of football Daniel Anderson picked out a couple of lads for ‘best' and ‘fairest' in Chris Follin and Lewis Furlong.

Special mentions also have to go to Rob Fairclough and Matty Costello too.

Coach Derek Traynor described the victory as one of the best ever on any tour, against a big, committed and well organised Parramatta side.

The toughest challenge is yet to come with Penrith at the Pepper Stadium this weekend!

SAINTS ACADEMY PREP FOR CENTRAL COAST

DAY 8 - The lads were out at 8.15am for a session working on some individual specific drills.

Tommy Martyn worked with the kickers, Derek Traynor the forwards, Ian Talbot the dummy halves and Neil Kilshaw the outside backs.

Once the session finished it was a quick shower and change before jumping onto the bus and heading into the city for an afternoon of free time.

It was a first opportunity to spend some of the money that has been burning a hole in their pockets since we arrived.

Pandora charms, t-shirts, trainers, NRL training gear and boots all contributed to making lighter wallets.

The lad who was most happy with his purchase was Brad Pinder. He had saved up and bought the same bright green Asics boots as his idol, Tommy Martyn, and didn't worry about paying twice the price that Tommy had.

It was good to see that the lads clubbed together to help injured Josh Eaves celebrate his 18th birthday in style - he looked good wandering around Sydney in his ladies shorts, tourist T-shirt and hat complete with corks.

The second training session of the day was the final 'captains run'.

Derek Traynor named the team and welcomed Mike Weldon back into the match day squad after his illness.

The session was held in Parramatta just as heavy thunderstorms were coming to an end.

Preparations for tomorrow's game in Wyong against the Central Coast have gone well. The lads, still buzzing after Saturday's win cannot wait to get back out onto the field once again.

Match Report :

Story & Photo By : Dan Talintyre (Twitter: @dantalintyre)

Wests Tigers Brydens Lawyers Academy have gone down to St. Helens Academy 22-18 in an entertaining contest on Saturday night at Campbelltown Stadium.

St. Helens Academy have rarely lost on Australian soil since they began taking touring matches in 2004

Losing just three of their 19 (tour games) to date.

This years touring St. Helens Saints Academy quickly found their rhythm when Levy Nzoungou cut back against the grain to score after just five minutes.

Jordan Gibbons converted to give St. Helens an early 6-0 lead.

Wests Tigers Academy looked to have hit back when a superb intercept from Abdalla Matar saw the winger sprint away down the left touchline, but he was unable to ground it cleanly in the in-goal courtesy of some desperate defence from the visitors.

The home side would finally cross for points after 12 months following a deft kick from Hosea Leuea, which saw fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen charge through the line to score.

Leuea was unable to convert, however, leaving the score 6-4 in favour of St. Helens, which is how it would read at the end of the first third of the special match.

Wests Tigers Academy would come out firing after the break, and quickly took the lead through Adam Rizk after 28 minutes.

Adam Doueihi's successful conversion gave the home side a 10-6 lead, which is how it would remain for the next period of the match as a slew of attacking opportunities fell by the wayside for the home team.

After a superb individual effort in defence from Nathan Patolo stopped a certain try for St. Helens, Wests Tigers finally made their attacking advantage count when Hans Taala proved too strong close to the line and stretched out to score after 46 minutes.

Doueihi was unable to add the extras, leaving the score at 14-6.

Just before the end of the second third, St. Helens would cross for a crucial four-pointer as Chris Follin crashed over next to the posts — cutting the home side's lead to 14-12.

The traveling side would take the lead soon into the final third, with Jack Unsworth capping off a bit of enterprising play close to the line after 64 minutes.

Gibbons' successful conversion pushed the visitors' lead to 18-14 with 15 minutes to go.

After an intercept against the run of play put St. Helens in strong field position, the visitors further extended their lead on the 70th minute mark when Danny Edwards drew two defenders before sending hooker Alex Eckley over in the corner.

With an unsuccessful conversion, the scoreline remained at 22-14 in favour of St. Helens, before Wests Tigers quickly hit back through Abdalla Matar in the 75th minute.

That saw the lead cut to just 22-18 with under five minutes to play, but Wests Tigers Academy were unable to complete the comeback as St. Helens hung on for victory.

Tour Diary Day Four Academy News Academy Tour Of Australia 2015

Day Four

This morning began with a visit from the staff and crew from a local Sydney radio station who were broadcasting from our accommodation block.

The crew included Australian rugby legends Matty Johns, Mark Geyer and guest Greg Alexander.

The lads got out for an early morning training session, with the goal kickers out first practicing their techniques before everyone else joined them to go through some positional specific drills. The session had to be completed before the day hotted up to a lunchtime high of 36 degrees!

Next up was a trip to the city for lunch at Darling harbour and one of the most popular activities, the jet boat around the world famous Sydney harbour.

As we sat down in the harbour eating, you can imagine Rushie's reaction as he was forced to fight off a seagull that tried to steal his sandwich from his hand, just as he was about to take a bite.

The boat ride caused some confusion and panic within the group, with Chris Follin asking "Is the boat actually on water?" and Josh Eaves showing signs of nerves asking "Is this safe?" and saying "This is too fast for me!"

The most entertaining conversation of the day was between Jordan Gibbons and Matty Kilgannon. When discussing Australian wildlife Matty asked: "What's the difference between a crocodile and an alligator?" to which Jordan replied: "Sex, ones male and ones female!"

Back to business - All of the squad are fully fit and raring to go and as they are now settled in and have adjusted to time difference there was a real sense of excitement and nervous anticipation as we headed over to the St Mary's club for the second session of the day, the final, 'captains run', training session before tomorrow's game against the West Tigers Cubs.

Training went well and the lads are all looking forward now to what this tour is all about!
